Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In 2009 the Swedish government published a national strategy for development of the care of cancer patients. The government declared that every cancer patient would have a contact nurse.Purpose: To study the opinions, experiences, and thoughts that nurses at a Swedish hospital have in relation to their role as contact nurses.Method: A descriptive qualitative approach with one focus group interview with four nurses, and one group interview with two nurses working with various cancer diagnoses were conducted. They all work as contact nurses or equivalent. A content-analysis was then used to process the interviews.Result: The study found five roles in the work as a contact nurse: The supportive role, the informative role, the coordinated role, the caring role and future role. Some roles were included in the definition given by SKL, Sveriges Kommuner och Landsting (eng. Sweden’s Municipalities and County councils) but roles beyond the description was also identified. The clinics are at various stages of development toward the application of SKL’s definition. Conclusion: It exist several roles in the work as a contact nurse. There are difficulties but the work is perceived as rewarding, important and meaningful for the care of cancer-patients. All the participants of the study do not work from the definition given by SKL yet, and there’s still a need to further define and improve the role as a contact nurse. There is concern that the development of contact nurses will diminish in the future while the demand is increasing.
