Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT

Background: Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in Sweden. A cancer disease affects not only the patient but also the partner and relatives. Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect to the treatment. Previous studies have shown that wives of men with prostate cancer experience a higher degree of anxiety than the patient.

Aim: To investigate the correlations between sexual function and age and time since diagnosis in patients suffering from prostate cancer. The aim is also to investigate whether the patient’s sexual function correlates with how he and his partner estimate their mental health and their need of medical care regarding sexuality.

Method: This quantitative study uses data from a questionnaire based study by Arving et. al (2012) in which questionnaires were sent to patients diagnosed with prostate cancer and to their possible partners. 132 patients and their partners were included in this study.

Results: Partners of patients suffering from prostate cancer experience a greater anxiety than the patients. However, the patients are in a greater need of medical care regarding sexuality than their partners. In general, both patients and partners estimate lower degrees of anxiety and depression, which indicates that they, despite disease, have a good quality of life. No correlations were found between the patient’s sexual function and the mental health of the partners.

Conclusion: The majority of the men in this study maintain their interest in sex despite disease. Although the partners experience a greater degree of anxiety than the patients, this study indicates that both patient and partner have a good quality of life despite the cancer disease.
