Grannarne: utgiven med inledning och kommentarer av Carina och Lars Burman
2000 (English)Book (Other academic)
During the period 1828-1862 the Swedish author Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865) published a large number of novels and travel journals. The novel Grannarne (The Neighbours), publ. 1837, is among the most successful of these. It was widely translated, and at least fifty foreign editions have been published. In the 1840's and 1850's, when the author reached the peak of her international renown, she was often referred to as "The author of The Neighbours". The novel was particularly popular in the English-speaking world, and it had some importance in the development of the Victorian Novel.
This edition presents the first critical text, and the preface charters the themes and motifs of the novel, the process of its writing and printing, and its reception in Sweden.
