SJ is a government-owned passenger train operator in Sweden. SJ currently uses a
system called Ford for control and monitoring of maintenance. Technical and
organizational factors have given Ford the character of a monolithic system without
flexibility and conditions to meet SJ's increased requirements.
The main purpose of this master's thesis is to investigate how data quality can be
defined at SJ and to examine the data quality in Ford. This will give SJ an indication of
what their quality efforts should focus on in the future.
The technical data quality parameters found are: accuracy, timeliness, completeness
and consistency. The user centred data quality parameters are: accessibility,
understandability and reliability. These parameters have been used to better
understand and illustrate the user experience of the data quality in Ford and are used
to evaluate the current data quality.
This master’s thesis has resulted in a conclusion that data in Ford, according to the
technical parameters, is of good quality except for some specific problems. Even
though the users experience the data quality as relatively low, this thesis concludes
that the main problems are related to the user centred and organizational aspects
rather than to data itself. The quality problems in Ford are due to lack of education,
the way of working at SJ, the data base structure of Ford, the user interface and the
lack of functionalities in Ford.
