Protectors of Nature : People’s experiences of nature spirits and their meaning (English)
The aim of this study is to investigate how modern people can relate to personal experiences of nature spirits and supranormal beings, and to discuss the meaning of those experiences from a comparative perspective with traditional stories from past folkloristic studies. The material builds upon interviews with four people that have personal experiences and stories about nature spirits and supranormal beings, selected from a pilot study conducted as a survey on the Internet. The interviews was analysed using phenomenology as the theoretical framework.
The study shows that the informants have primarily their own framework of interpretation and meaning around their experiences, and that they hold a flexible attitude towards traditional stories, even if some similarities can be found in the visual appearance and lifestyle of the supernormal beings. None of those interviewed shows interest in gaining more knowledge from literature, films and other media about their experiences.
For the informants, the key meanings of those experiences are joy, strength, warmth and security. The beings they experience are their friends; they provide guidance, help and advice when needed. These experiences gives a stronger connection to the nature, and shows for the informants that man is not alone, that there is more life to this reality than can be seen and experienced, than what first meets the eye.
