Pour une linguistique contrastive variationnelle : le conditionnel épistémique d'"emprunt" en français, en italien et en espagnol

Abstract [en]

This article aims at being a plea for variational contrastive linguistics. That is why we study the Reportive Conditional (RC) in French (Kadhafi seraitRC malade ‘Gaddafi is reportedly sick’), Italian (Gheddafi sarebbeRC malato) and Spanish (Kadafi estaríaRC enfermo), analysing intralinguistic variation from a comparative interlinguistic perspective and using both unidirectional translation corpora and comparable corpora. The RC seems to be semantically and syntactically fairly equivalent in these languages, whereas peninsular Spanish differs considerably from French, Italian and Latin American Spanish from a diaphasic point of view, which as a result gives rise to a diatopic variation in Spanish. The diaphasic properties of the RC in peninsular Spanish are partly determined by a depreciative, purist and sometimes deontological normative discourse. This purist discourse is sustained by supposed diachronic differences between Spanish and French. Clearly, diaphasic, diatopic and diachronic aspects of variation are interdependent in the case of the Spanish RC.
