Abstract [en]

In this paper we give a brief survey of the modal theory of polyphony (MTP). As this theory falls within the general framework of Scandinavian polyphony theory, it is directly inspired by the works of Ducrot and Anscombre. However, the MTP differs in some respects from their theory. The main idea of the MTP, according to which the constituent semantic contents of linguistic polyphony – the points of view– are divisible into a “shown” modus and a veridictional dictum, has some undeniable heuristic virtues, but seems incompatible with the epistemological choices of non modal, argumentative and “anti-referentialist” theories of polyphony (Anscombre, Carel, Ducrot, Lescano). The MTP also differs in some important respects from (partly) referentialist theories of polyphony such as ScaPoLine-theory and praxematic dialogism.
