Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe how patients experience that their planned back operation was postponed. Method: Qualitative interview with semi- structured questions was used. A total of eight patients, five men and three women aged between 27 to 72 years who would undergo surgery in an orthopedic clinic participated in the study. Result: The analysis resulted in three themes and five subthemes. These became the answer of the analysis. The study showed that all participants felt disappointed, sad, and that they experienced an impaired quality of life the longer they had to wait for their surgery. Those who have had their surgery postponed more than once expressed even more disappointment and they said that they felt depressed because they had expectations and hopes of getting rid of their problems. They felt run over and powerless when the operation was postponed since they could not influence the decision themselves. Their lives were characterized by pain and suffering in different ways. Conclusion: When the planned surgery was postponed, it had consequences for the patients, which in turn leads to suffering because the body becomes impaired over time. Better planning and more resources are needed to enable patients´ needs and to respond to their suffering.
