Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to explore how young adults reflect on decision making and choices. The three main questions of this study are: What images and expectations do these young people associate with decision making and choices? How do these stories construct self-perception and identity? How do the young adults talk about the interplay between their choices and decisions with how life is generally portrayed?

The empirical data comprises interviews with three young people between the ages of 19 and 22, focusing on a period when they make their first independent decisions regarding education and career. The analysis is mainly based on theories of narratives, modernity, and life-stories as a methodological and theoretical basis. The study shows that choices are viewed as a form of responsibility as well as acts of individuality. Yet, the decision making is often based in relation to cultural beliefs and age norms. Furthermore, while freedom of choice is expressed as a benefit it nonetheless conveys feelings of ambivalence and worries.
