Abstract [en]

Abstract

This master thesis is based on a translation from German to Swedish of the first four chapters of the novel Tiertage by Henning Ahrens, first published in 2007. The thesis consists of two major parts; a theoretical analysis of the novel from a literary and a translatory perspective, and an empirical commentary on the lexical translation problems of the text. The main principle of translation regarding the work of literature in question is semantic and formal fidelity to the original. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss and to motivate the cases where a faithful translation of a lexical unit is not possible. These cases mainly belong to the categories Anglicisms, Metaphors and similes, Onomatopoeia, Terminology, Word play and Cultural specifics. The reasons for the partial or entire untranslatability of certain lexical units are primarily linguistic or pragmatic differences between German and Swedish and geographical or cultural specificity.
