Abstract [en]

Historical maps are a vital and frequently used information source in a variety of disciplines and applications. They moved into the GIS –community a decade or so ago. A comprehensive scanningproject by Lantmäteriverket will make most of the maps in Sweden available as raster images. Twomajor projects have modelled the maps for storage in databases, but they have several drawbacks. Our project models the maps as closely as possible to the original structure with a very data-orientedapproach. This article presents various applications which go beyond the traditional use of historicalmaps in GIS. These brief examples involve data mining, statistics, retrogressive analysis and hypothesistesting.
