Abstract [en]

The educational system in Sweden is the result of the post war reforms in Sweden and a social engineering process during mid 20th century based on the society needs and the equal rights to education for all.

The system went from a parallel school system to a uniform system. This means equal access to education was in focus in the start but were developed to a strategy where the equal right to learn with differing needs and abilities. As an effect of the discussions of quality based on the international assessments the last decades new ideas of the system has taken place. This means the system now is in a process where the system is going from a uniform model towards a dual model. This chapter will give the context of the educational system and how the changing process started from a parallel school system towards a uniform model. This is connected to all levels in the system. The focus is on which role has education in the development of the Swedish society.
