Background: Diabetes is one of the most common non-infectious diseases in the world.Proper diet and physical activity is essential for the treatment of diabetes type 2 and the aimis normalization of blood glucose level to reduce the risk of complications. This diseaseplaces demands on the individual's self-care competence and the care staff's ability to helpaccurately. The nurse’s role is to support and inform, and to help the patient developcompetence and independence in self-care. Patients should be seen as unique individuals andthe care staff should adapt the dietary advice with regard to cultural, religious and socioeconomiccircumstances.Aim: The objective was to examine which evidence-based dietary guidelines can berecommended to type 2 diabetics, and see how dietary advice can be tailored based on thepatient's background.Method: A literature study was conducted in the autumn of 2014 that included 13 articles ofqualitative and quantitative design from PubMed and CINHAL. Quality analysis was madeaccording to a quality review template. Results: This study shows that little research of good quality has emerged since SBU’ssystematic review from 2010 regarding diet, individual foods and beverages applicable todiabetics. According to the literature, there are shortcomings in the adaptation of the dietaryadvice given to patients with type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: The evidence suggests that patient-tailored recommendations and advice areneeded for patients with type 2 diabetes, and that there is much to be done to adapt the dietaryadvice to the patient's needs and background.
