Abstract [en]

Background: A few known risk factors for pregnancy complications are use of tobacco (cigarettes and snuff) and caffeine consumption during pregnancy.

Aim: To explore the extent to which the research participants make changes in their habits, concerning the use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco (snuff) and caffeine, three months before and during early pregnancy. Another aim was to investigate if there was a difference between women having planned their pregnancy and women with an unplanned pregnancy.

Method: The participants, a total of 3390 women, were recruited via antenatal clinics located in the middle part of Sweden. The data was analyzed via Chi-square tests using the statistical program SPSS.

Result: The study showed that the number of women who smoked, used snuff and/or drank coffee decreased during pregnancy. The smallest observed reduction was within coffee consumption and the largest within smoking. A low education level, having previous children, younger age and an unplanned pregnancy was associated to continuing smoking during pregnancy. However, planning the pregnancy and not having previous children was associated with increased snuff use during pregnancy.

Conclusion: This thesis shows that most women made some changes in their lifestyle during pregnancy, in terms of tobacco use and coffee consumption. The number of women who either smoked or used snuff, decreased markedly during pregnancy in comparison with three months before pregnancy. Midwives have an important role in motivating pregnant women to stop using tobacco, as it is among the most important risk factors for negative pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract [sv]

Metod: Deltagarna rekryterades via mödravårdscentraler i Mellansverige, 3390 kvinnor besvarade frågeformuläret.
