Background: Infertiliy is defined as the inability to conceive despite regular unprotected sex life for more than a year. In 1978 the first child was born after infertility treatment. As the research progresses, more couples are given the opportunity to become parents through assisted reproduction. Before treatment starts an investigation to try to find the cause of infertility. The etiology determine the choice of treatment. In IVF / ICSI, female eggs is fertilized with seman outside the body and then inserted into the woman's uterus.
Objective: The objective was to investigate pregnancy and obstetric outcome after IVF/ICSI- treatment at Uppsala University Hospital.
Method: Journal reviewing study with quantitative approach. Fishers exakt test was used to analyse data. The sample consisted of 215 women after treatment at the Reproductive clinic at Akademiska University Hospital, and had given birth at the same hospital. These were compared with an equal control group where the women had children after a spontaneous pregnancy.
Results: Several significant differences were found. Women undergoing IVF treatment had an increased risk of placenta previa, and premature birth. They had more pregnancy complications and tended to more frequently encounter large postpartum haemorrhage. However, a majority of deliveries ended in spontaneous vaginal delivery in both groups.
Conclusion: Although most pregnancies and births in IVF-treated women is normal, it is important to know that there are certain risks. In many cases they can be traced to the woman's individual characteristics. Continuous evaluation of methods of ART is important.
