A Swedish Perspective on Violence in Games Between the Years 1998-2014 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Kring milleniumskiftet intensifierades dock debatten kring underhållningsvåldet, bland annat i U.S.A.

Abstract [en]

Violence in comics and movies has been an issue discussed in society over the years. In the beginning of the 00´s the discussion about violence in entertainment and popular culture became intensified in the U.S.A. and other countries. In the U.S.A. it led to comprehensive public hearings with focus on popular culture, which e.g. included the matter of violent games. In Sweden there has also been some debate about games and their violent content, which also has been accounted for, although the report did not focus on violent games as an isolated topic. With this in mind this essay intends to illustrate how the subject-matter of violent games was discussed in Sweden during the years 1998-2014. This is achieved mainly by examining articles related to the matter in four swedish newspapers (Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen och Svenska Dagbladet) in their online archives. The selection of articles is acquired by using keywords. The results is presented according to general themes and chronological relevancy. Some of these themes include “knowledge gaps between the generations”, “quarrel among scholars”, “age ratings”, “foreign influences in the public debate” and “moral and ethical standpoints”. Analysis of said themes helps to illustrate the characteristics of the Swedish approach on the subject-matter of violent games during these years. Among other things the results shows less tendencies to moral panic than other countries e.g. Germany and U.S.A. Swedish state agencies has also tried to counteract similar tendencies by focusing on increasing the general knowledge about games.
