Abstract [en]

In this study we have examined the experience of staff appraisal between employer and employees in different organisations. To get the result we asked them some questions:

-     What is the attitude of managers and employees to staff appraisal?

-     How is the staff appraisal being performed and what is the context?

-     How is the staff appraisal followed up?

-     What are the differences and similarities between employers and employees perceptions of staff appraisal?

The method used were eight qualitative interviews with four employers and four employees. The related persons differed in age, sex and profession. The results have been analyzed through Vygotsky's theory of socio - cultural perspective and proximal development zone and Dixions theory of dialogue in workplace. The results have also been compared with previous research on the same topic.

The results showed that the employers had a very positive attitude towards staff appraisals. The majority of employees were also positive to staff appraisal. For employees, it was mostly about to find out how and what they perform at work. For the employers, on the other hand, it was about developing employees and enhancing the quality of actual work. We could see a difference in how the employee appraisal was performed and also how it was followed up in the different organisations. Some informants conducted employee appraisals once a year and some had three different calls during the year.

The results showed that in many employee appraisal, the major focus was personal evaluation of the employee but also that the call would confirm the relation between the employer and employee. The question about feedback was something that the employers found working out good while some of the employees would like more feedback between the calls. Both employees and employers felt it was important with honesty and openness between them. To what extent they can be open and talk about everything differs between our informants. Our contributions to the discipline pedagogy is a deeper understanding of how important it is with openness between employer and employees to the possibility to develop the individual and later on in the whole organisation.
