Estimating the Effect of Increased Access to Handguns on the Number of Homicides in Chicago

This paper studies the effect of a handgun ban on the number of homicides. Particularly, this paper looks at a United States Supreme Court ruling which decried that Chicago’s 23 year old handgun ban was unconstitutional upon the number of homicides within the city limits of Chicago. It is shown that homicide rates in Chicago, upon altering the preexisting law to permit handgun ownership, exhibited a statistically significant decrease in the homicide rate.
