Implementation of a 3D environment when assembling capacitors in racks (English)
Abstract [en]

Companies within the industry of product realisation are under constant changes

because of the higher requirements applicable to products, laws and customers.

Therefore, it is required for companies to comply with the development in order to

remain competitive at the market. This applies both to the quality of the products as

well as how companies execute their work. Minimize waste, streamline processes

and increase company productivity are factors that come into play at the highest

degree. The new working methods must not only be better and more efficient but

also more easily worked for employees for them to be able to feel an increased value

of the change.

As a step in this direction, ABB Capacitors wants to modernize their process in the

assembly department. This thesis has examined the possibility of moving to a 3D

environment in the production for the assembly of the capacitor units in the racks.

This, by installing computer monitors by the assembly tables so that module readings

and other document handlings are done only digitally.

To reach the results, interviews with various employees were carried out and field

trips to other units within ABB and to SAAB Aeronautics in Linköping were

implemented. Gathered theory has also worked as a necessary tool as well as a

complete mapping of the current state the departments within the frames of the

thesis are in.

The work has resulted in an implementation proposal where a detailed description is

presented of what is needed to be changed and added, from today’s point of view, to

the 3D model in order to make it the information carrier and in turn eliminate the

accompanying drawing. The work also describes what changes is needed to be done

in the document management systems and the production system to enable such an


To give ABB Capacitors conditions to easily make a decision whether the proposal is

worth the while or not, a Business Case has been done. In the Business Case costs,

savings and quality improvement measures that arises are presented to demonstrate

the viability of the implementation proposal. Conclusions and recommendations have

also been developed with regard to help ABB Capacitors with their decision. The

main conclusion is that the implementation proposal is viable and should be

implemented. The work at all departments will benefit from it.
