Abstract [en]

The increasing world population and the ambition to improve the quality of life contribute to an increase in demand for energy. If the world continues to use existing energy sources the carbon emissions will increase substantially which leads to climate change. Therefore, there is a need for a clean and environmental friendly energy that can be delivered by the future nuclear (Generation IV).

The project presents a theoretical study in form of a summary of the energy and electricity consumption in Sweden, nuclear power plants in Sweden, fast neutron reactors and their fuel types in the world. Furthermore, the current problems with nuclear (uranium resources, safety, nuclear waste and nuclear proliferation) and the influence of fast neutron reactors on these challenges are discussed.

The empirical part is in the form of a survey (questions) directed to all nuclear activities in Sweden. Included Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), Swedish Nuclear Fuel Management Company (SKB), Nuclear Safety and Education (KSU), Oskarshamn Power Group (OKG), Forsmark Power Group (FKA) and Ringhals AB (RAB). The answers are collected and analysed to present the opinions and thoughts from the companies contacted.

The results of the theoretical part are a comparison between light-water reactors and fast neutron reactors. The comparison highlights that the fast neutron reactors offer solutions for today's nuclear problems and are more suitable as energy source for a cleaner and safer operation. Advantages and disadvantages of fast neutron reactors are raised in the discussion’s part. Moreover, a choice of a fast neutron reactor and its fuel for Sweden is included in this project.

The survey detail whether the nuclear power industry in Sweden are familiar of Generation IV and fast neutron reactors and answers the question how companies consider the reprocess of decommissioned plants in Barsebäck. In addition, it covers the necessary changes that must be taken to introduce fast neutron reactors in Sweden. Some companies and governmental bodies believe that after a period of few years without nuclear accidents, it will be possible to regain public confidence in nuclear power.

The concluding part of the report contains conclusions and future developments which are indicating a proposal to contact with countries that have fast neutron reactor in operation or under construction, where it creates an attempt to discuss certain issues and to highlight the views and challenges.
