Abstract [en]

A Syllogistic of Emotion. The Enthymematic Structure of Aristotle’s Analysis of Pathos

Aristotle’s concept of the enthymeme has traditionally been perceived as a form of argument in a fairly strict sense and so associated primarily with only one of the three rhetorical modes of proof, logos. The relation between the enthymeme and the other two modes of rhetorical proofs, pathos and ethos, has with few exceptions been perceived as problematic – if ever discussed at all. Through a rereading of Aristotle’s analysis of pathos in the second book of the Rhetoric, this article argues that the evoking or control of the pathé of the audience is consistently represented as a threepartite structure resembling, but not identical with, the syllogism. As a consequence of this widening of the concept some of the previously perceived inconsistencies in the Rhetoric can be resolved – such as the seemingly incompatible criticism of earlier handbooks’ focus on the manipulation of the emotions of the judges in the first book and the detailed analysis of pathos in the second. While the proposed interpretation bears some resemblance to earlier attempts made by William Grimaldi, Antoine Braet and William Fortenbaugh, the text argues that it also differs in important respects, thereby avoiding some of the problems connected with these earlier interpretations.
