Abstract [en]

This study examines what national role conceptions Sweden perceives for itself when it comes to foreign policy.

The parliament documents that are issued every year to determine the Swedish line internationally have been examined from the period 1998 to 2015. At first the analysis examined however the five previous role conceptions of Sweden remained or not. The results showed that four remain and that the fifth being the role ”Independent” showed some weaknesses. In the second part of the analysis, it became clear that Sweden has adapted three new role conceptions during the examined time. This leads to the conclusion that Sweden’s national role conceptions have shifted and the country is taking on more responsibility in the international arena.
