Cultural Science and the Repertoire of Works: Herder’s Plastik as a Hands-on Experience
2016 (English)In: J. G. Herder: From Cognition to Cultural Science / Von der Erkenntnis zur Kulturwissenschaft / [ed] Beate Allert, Heidelberg: Synchron , 2016, 397-446 p.Chapter in book (Refereed)
Herder’s work Plastik [Sculpture] (1778) includes at the back a list of 17 printing errors called “Verbesserungen” and was moreover delivered with 7 cancels that were to be pasted in by the bookbinder. We have no report on what errors these cancels were actually correcting. An investigation yields a surprising result. The “errors” were very few, mostly insignificant deviations from the text. Reflection on these cancels led to the disclosure of a “Schöpfungshieroglyphe”, based on these leaves, that functions as a summary of the book from the standpoint of the feeling hand of sculpture, and the table of “Verbesserungen” gives a comparable overview from the perspective of the searching eye of painting: hence, two different sides of the handmade object we are reading. Internal references suggest furthermore that Ueber die neuere Deutsche Litteratur , Aelteste Urkunde des Menschengeschlechts and Plastik were conceived as a prominent trio in Herder’s oeuvre, buoyed up by the concepts of acoustics, optics and anaglyphics.
