Abstract [en]

The purpose of this work was to describe state of the electrical energy storage and to

highlight the barriers and drivers for electrical energy storage in Sweden today.

Sweden's electricity grid will soon undergo major changes. A more decentralized

power grid and increased use of renewable energies demands new energy storage

technologies. The ability to store energy will therefore be critical in the electrical grid

that is now emerging. Battery prices have fallen drastically in the recent years and the

interest for large-scale electricity storage batteries has increased. Multiple applications

have been identified for large scale battery storage and there is an economic potential

in these techniques. Against this background, there is reason to examine the situation

of the development of electrical energy storage in batteries in the Swedish electrical

grid. The central question of this report is:

To answer this ten interviews with an investigative interview method was made.

As a theoretical framework, a research project called “Infrasystemets dynamik” was

used. The researcher of that project is named Arne Kaijser and is associate professor

at the department of technology and business history at the Institute of Technology in

Stockholm. In his research Kaijser compares development of various kinds of large

technical systems with the infrastructure function. Examples of such systems are

transport, communications and energy.


In general it can be said that the participants considered it to be lack of interest and

obstacles in the regulations that so far has prevented energy storage towards the grid.

Initiatives from the Swedish Energy Agency was regarded to have been the only

driving force for the large scale battery storage up until now. Overall it was said in the

interviews that the elimination of obstacles in the regulatory environment and

continued battery development might be what affects the ability of electrical energy

storage in the future.

Electrical energy storage will be needed and therefore it is important that long-term

political goals for electrical energy storage can be formulated. To do that a good and

broad debate is needed.
