Thee object of this article is to explore the construction of identity in the narrative of judge Jephthah in three texts: The book of Judges 10-11 and two nordic plays by Ernst Didring (1912) and Johannes Linnankoski (1919).Rather than stereotypes, the biblical figures of Jephthah and his daughter feature as sites of conflict and paradox. Whereas Didring enhances contradictions and ambituities, Linnankoski reduces and explains them.
The article is motivated by the conviction that analysis is preferable to censure with regard to ethically provocative texts. I begin by offering a brief introduction to feminist exegesis and conclude by addressing the possibilities and difficulties of diversity in feminist scholarship.
