On the Edge of Empires: The Cossacks’ Military-Political Structure in the Swedish Government Debates 1654–1660
Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
This thesis seeks to gain an insight into how the Cossacks’ military-political structure/private military company was perceived by leading members of the political elite in Sweden. This is achieved by studying how the Swedish dignitaries assessed the qualities of the Cossacks during the Second Northern War (1654–1660). In this thesis the Zaporozhian Host is approached from the point of the military devolution and the author concludes that the Cossacks’ military-political structure was perceived by the Swedes as a group nested inside the Polish-Lithuanian territories and traded in their light cavalry regiments for economic and political rewards.
