Parenting literature from a gender perspective (English)
Abstract [en]

By studying parenting literature from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s I try to answer the question; did boys and girls upbringing differ? What rules did the different sexes have to live by according to the literature? And did they change over the time period of my investigation?

The authors seems to follow the notion that boys and girl holds biological differences which can both help and hinder them to reach their ideals. The ideal woman was under my search period a hardworking, gentle, kind-hearted devoted mother and wife who placed family above all else. Her biological weakness was her sensitivity, which made her an easy target for temptations; by teaching her how to avoid enticement she would become an ideal woman. Because of her weakness a woman was unreliable and therefore had no place in a mans world. The ideal man was strong, independent, noble, and stable. His weakness was his lust for violence that needed to be controlled, not muffled because it could be of use in some situations.

Even though big society changes occurred under the time period of my search, the advice for girls and boys upbringing methods barely modified. The religions influence decreased in the 1900s also the encouraging of flogging as a method for punishment. There were debates in the literature about whether or not to embrace the new world but the actual changes in nurture before the 1950s were minimal in both girls and boys education.
