This paper is a historiographical investigation of how it can be that different biographies of the Nicaraguan rebel leader Augusto C. Sandino present such different pictures of who he was. In order to answer that question, I examine the methods that the biographers employ when they portray Sandino. I also investigate if there is a pattern in what facts they chose to include and exclude and what proof they present for their claims that Sandino had a certain set of characteristics, motivations and goals. I then examine if the differences can be explained by the fact that the biographers use Sandino to say something about contemporary policy issues. The conclusion is that there exists huge differences in how the biographers prove their claims as to what purpose Sandino had with his rebellion and that these differences are linked to the fact that they use Sandino to say something about their own time and place in history. Yet another conclusion is that the proof some of the biographies present for their claims have such deficiencies that it is relevant to talk of abuse of history.
