Abstract [en]

Background: Trends in fitness and health have expanded all over the world. Everywhere individuals strive to gain a healthy and active lifestyle by choosing the right way of eating and exercising. The social application Instagram plays an active roll in the construction of a healthy lifestyle through multiple fitness-profiles that update their account on a daily basis with diets, recipes and workouts. As a result, the active and healthy lifestyle message impacts large numbers of people, where a healthy and active body is idealized.

Objectives: The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the creators of fitness-profiles on Instagram are affected by the trends in fitness and health and how they both consciously and unconsciously contribute and reproduce an ideal healthy way of living.

Method and materials: The material of this thesis is composed of interviews with seven Swedish women, that all have in common that they have fitness-profiles on Instagram, which they update occasionally. One answered questionnaire from a Swedish woman and an online-observation of these fitness-profiles has been used as a complementary material for the interviews. The material has been analysed from a phenomenological perspective focusing on the informants’ experiences and has been presented with help of theories from Michael Foucault (2003), Anthony Giddens (2008) and Jostein Gripsrud (2011).

Results and conclusion: The results of the interviews and observations show that one of the main reasons why my informants document their training and diet online is to keep track and control of bodily changes, both to themselves but also for the benefit of their followers on Instagram. My informants use their account to inspire and encourage other people to go to the gym and eat healthily, which today is an ideal, produced by consumerism. Hence, they also create a specific identity and lifestyle through their fitness-account, which affects their social life, behaviour and bodily consciousness. The fitness-lifestyle consists of an active control of workouts, physical transformations and diets to sculpt a body to fit the ideal. Products that are categorized as fitness are also significant elements to a healthy lifestyle.
