Abstract [en]

The possibility to measure voltage

over a filament at high voltage level

in klystrons and magnetrons has been

evaluated. A prototype with circuits

neccessary for measuring, power supply

and fiber optic communication has been

designed, built and tested in a

magnetron at Scandinova System AB.

These measurements lead to an

increased understanding of how

klystrons and magnetrons work and also

give the user better control over

their performance during operation.

Since measurements have been done on a

high voltage level near powerful

electric and magnetic fields, there

have been high demands on power

supply, circuit protection and

communication. Additionally, for

klystron systems, the measurement

circuit has been placed in an oil tank

with the transformers.

The complete system consists of two

major parts, a measurement circuit to

do the actual measurements on high

voltage level, as well as a control

circuit that controls the measurement

circuit and collects and displays the

data on an LCD display. Communication

between the two units is done via two

fiber optic cables.

Measurements were conducted

successfully but unfortunately power

supply became an issue and it is

recommended to pursue that subject

further in the future.
