Metonymic proper names: mass nouns and/or count nouns? The case of Zlatan in French and Swedish
2016 (English)In: Langue française (Paris. 1969), ISSN 0023-8368, E-ISSN 1957-7982, no 190, 121-136 p.Article in journal (Refereed) PublishedText
This study deals with the constructions faire du Hollande / Sarkozy / Zlatan, etc. in French, and gora en Zlatan / Bergman / Obama / Foppa, etc. ("to do a Zlatan / Bergman / ...') in Swedish. The direct object of the verb faire is a partitive NP whose head is a proper name, while the object of gora is a singular indefinite NP. In both cases, the proper names are metonymic with a qualitative reading, referring to actions or behaviour. The interest is focussed on how the formal mass/count distinction of the proper name constructions influences on their use and interpretation. The question of pluralisation and gender of the proper name in Swedish will also be discussed.
