The aim of this study was to invetigate it the post-operative instructions and self-help aids for patients who underwent hip arthroplasty and any influence on the frequency of hip dislocations, if there was any difference in the number of early counter late dislocations and if there was any correlation between age and dislocations. The chosen population included patients that were given a total hip recplacement during the period 970301-011231 at Gävle-Sandviken county hospital (n=850) and Falu hospital (n=1126). The criteria for inclusion were those patients, diagnosed with coxarthrosis/arthritis, who received a primary hip prosthesis and dislocated during the same period of time (n=18). With comparison, there could be found no significant difference in the number of dislocations between the two hospitals. Most patients sustained a dislocation within the firs threee months after the oepration and the age of the patients was evenly distributed. In conclusion this study has shown that threre is reason to reduce and individualize the number of self-help aids given to patients after hip arthroplasty. The indication of prescription should bed based on the need of self-help aids and not to prevent dislocations.
