    Abstract [en]

    As cities grow and densify, the amount of traffic in and through settlement also increases. Horizontal surfaces are increasingly disappearing in favor of housing and infrastructure. This leads to increased noise levels and increased emissions in both residential and green belts.

    Where exploitation cannot be adapted in any other way, or where natural shielding against noise cannot be achieved, noise screens are often erected to minimize noise propagation from roads and railways. The most commonly occurring noise screen today consists of wood, but given its prerequisites, the study intends to investigate whether noise screens in concrete can be a better alternative.

    The purpose is thus to design and dimension noise screens in concrete. The study is carried out in collaboration with Butong AB, which since 2009 has developed and constructed plant walls in concrete.

    The objective is to construct and dimension a self-supporting noise shield, with integrated substrate for plants to grow and germinate, based on Butong's existing plant walls. To achieve the report's objectives, different types of matrices and designs have been evaluated with respect to strength and mechanical properties. The calculations made are numerical and performed in SolidWorks.

    The results from the numerical tests have been used to produce a noise shield with intended dimensions and where loads have been applied according to current eurocodes and SIS standards.

    The conclusion indicates that green noise screens in concrete maintain a high competitiveness against noise screens in wood. The long span, good mechanical properties and aesthetically pleasing design are some of the factors that support the conclusion.

    Abstract [en]

    The housing and services sector in Sweden consumes 40 % of thetotal energy use. To reach sustainable development goals existingbuildings must be energy efficient. The potential for energyefficiency is in conflict with cultural goals. Uppsalahem is areal-estate company affected by this conflict. Parts of theproperty portfolio are affected by the cultural heritageobjectives, where energy efficiency improvements are desirable.The consequences of this has been investigated.To investigate if and how energy efficiency measures are inconflict with the cultural environment, the regulations werereviewed through the writing of National Board of Housing,Building and Planning, texts of laws and old court orders. Twobuilding permit administrators in Uppsala municipality wereinterviewed and the program VIP-Energy was used to investigate theenergy effect.Heritage Conservation Act, Environmental Code, Planning andBuilding Act are laws that deals with cultural environments. Thefocus of this report was the Planning and Building Act. Dependingon which skills are available in the municipality differentdecision regarding building permits can be made. Also dependingwho is performing the evaluation of the building, different valuescan be determined. The simulations in VIP-Energy showed how muchenergy can be saved through different energy efficiency measures.The most effective measure could provide for 77 newly buildapartments with the energy saved each year after implementing themeasure. The report discusses consequences for the environment,real estate companies, residents and energy producers, suppliersand distributors.

    The construction industry is currently undergoing a modernizationwhere drone technology is a part of this. Construction and realestate companies are curious to test new technologies to improvetheir way of working, where drones equipped with a thermal camera isan area that is being fully explored.

    Through an in-depth analysis, this report highlights through relevantliterature studies and interview studies, benefits and barriers inthe implementation of drone technology for thermal inspections andthe future development potential of the technology through relevantliterature studies and interview studies.

    In order to describe the limitations that may arise regarding abuilding thermal inspection with drones, a case has been put forwardto the interviewees in order to more clearly compare the drone withthe traditionally hand-held thermal camera. This is to decide whetherdrones are a good tool for building inspectors.

    The results section shows that drones with a thermal camera equipped,in some cases are a good complement to the traditional handheldthermal camera and that drones are to be used more by buildinginspectors in the future.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis evaluates public spaces based on the relationship between humans and thephysical environment. A comparative study was developed, comparing two differentpublic spaces, Hornstull torg and Skärholmstorget. The two places have beenstatistical analysed through chisquare tests and evaluated based on different factors, toidentify strengths and weaknesses. The factors have been identifiedas important forpublic spaces to be perceived as attractive and have been determined with help froma theoretical framework based on urban research.

    Social progress has resulted in changes on how we use public spaces which createsnew demands on the surroundings. The study concludes that a public space'sattractiveness is a complicated and multifolded concept that has different meanings fordifferent people. On the other hand, it is clear that public spaces are connected toboth social and physical structures and the combination of these two dimensionsdecides how the place is perceived and used.

    The results from the chisquare-tests show differences depending on gender and ageon how they experience public space. Skärholmstorget fulfils more of the factors thathave been identified as crucial for an attractive public space than Hornstull torg does.However, the majority of the respondents perceive Skärholmstorget as moreinsecure than Hornstull torg. This may have effect on how often the public space isused.

    Prospect for new guidance in the design of FRP: Support to the implementation, harmonization and further development of the Eurocodes2016Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Over the last twenty years, many innovative solutions have confirmed the usefulness of composite structures realized with FRPs (Fibre Reinforced Polymer or Plastic). The need of European standards for use of fibre reinforced polymer composites in civil engineering was justified in 2007 in the JRC Report EUR 22864 EN. The new European technical rules will be developed using the existing organization of CEN/TC250.The present report has been worked out in the frame of CEN/TC250/WG4 activities. The report encompasses:

    • Part I, which introduces the policy framework and the CEN/TC250 initiative
    • Part II, which gives a prospect for CEN guidance for the design and verification of composite structuresrealized with FRPs

    The report presents scientific and technical background intended to stimulate debate and serves as a basis for further work to achieve a harmonized European view on the design and verification of such structures. This has been the main impulse to include the work item of the Fibre Reinforced Polymer Structures in the Mandate M/515 with high priority.

    Public procurement in Sweden is regulated by the Act on Public Procure­ment (lagen om offentlig upphandling, LOU, in Swedish). The Public procurement in Sweden stands every year approximately for 500 bil­lion Swedish crowns of the taxpayers’ money. It is therefore im­portant that the money is spent in the best possible way. The focus in this study is set on the relationship between the small- and medium sized building entrepreneurs and the government. The study is built on international scientific arti­cles together with Swedish industry articles and the results from our own interview study. A comparison has been made between the three and it has resulted in listing obstacles for SME (small- and medium sizes enter­prises) and how to overcome these obstacles.

    Abstract [en]

    This article reports on a video-based analysis of bicycling practices in Gothenburg and Toulouse. It is based on actor-network theory, an approach that studies human and non-human entities and their contributions to social action equally. The paper examines bicycles and their interactions with cyclists and loads in the transport of people and goods. Accordingly, this paper presents methodological, theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of bicycle transportation as a possible method for developing sustainable urban environments. This paper also presents an innovative way to study ordinary social practices and describes how these practices shape associated societal issues.

    Abstract [en]

    The average time for an individual to be located in a refugee situation is 17 years. That people are fleeing for such a long period of their life means that a large part of their human rights can easily be neglected. This study examines the humanitarian organizations MSB’s and UN- HCR's implementation of refugee camps and how they allow refugees to play a part in this process. This essay intends to examine the policy the organizations adhere to, namely the in- ternationally recognized handbooks Handbook of Emergencies and The Sphere Project. Em- pirical material is based on a qualitative interview method where a comparison between poli- cy and practice is investigated. Employees of organizations and experts on refugee camp de- sign, management and urban planning have served as respondents in this study. The city planning theory collaborative rationality is used to examine the empirical data to answer how organizations work with refugee camps, if a dialogue processes occur between organizations and refugees, and what benefits the theory can provide. This is followed by a discussion re- garding the human rights of the refugees and whether these are considered in the implementa- tion of the camp. A question raised in the discussion is whether a clarification of the concept could help the organizations' employees to meet the human rights of the refugees. The aim of this thesis is to create an interdisciplinary understanding across disciplinary boundaries. The idea is that the amalgamation of disciplines can improve the humanitarian organizations’ work and aid refugees living conditions. This study highlights a discrepancy in the relation- ship between policy and practice in relation to the procedure manuals, but also in relation to refugees and the satisfaction of human rights. A majority of the respondents testify a wish that a dialogue should be conducted between the organization and the recipients of humanitar- ian aid but that issues such as time pressure, ignorance and power relations complicates this process. What is needed for an improvement of dialogue processes is that the organizations need to take clearer positions on how the practical implementation should play out which would more easily control their employees to execute their work. States need to review their approach to refugees and to take responsibility for the people who need help. Last but not least, the concept of human rights and Nussbaum's definition of it is offered as a suggestion as to how UNHCR and MSB could simplify their work to accommodate that the refugees are treated within the realms of the human rights legislation.

    We are living during the time of urbanization which means that more peoplechoose to settle in big cities. This has resulted in a housing shortage in many ofSweden’s big cities, including Uppsala. Due to long waiting lists and highprices for condominiums students are among the ones hardest hit by thehousing crisis. Growth is expected to proceed and if Uppsala is to be able tohandle this in a sustainable way it requires great efforts in city planning.Through archive studies and interviews this degree project examines thepossibilities for Uppsala to become a conurbation and how this affects thestudents housing situation.The result shows a vision of a future Uppsala with a structure of residentialareas and transport networks that could improve the housing situation forstudents.

    Abstract [en]

    This work aim to contribute to making constructions sites in Sweden safer. The purpose is achieved by focusing on the preventing work that is made during the planning phase. Therefore this work will result in recommendations on how  to better prevent work environment hazards and which risks are the hardest to identify. During the planning phase a work environment document is required to be established. These documents and the belonging risk analysis is the core of this work. The problem is identified thru qualitative interviews with four informants. All of the four informants shared the opinion about knowledge being inadequate in the planning stage. This is revealed in the work environment plan that often is copied from another project instead of being adapted for every unique project.

    To achieve a proper work environment plan a wide range of knowledge is required. This makes it hard for one person to carry out this work while also leading the projection since vast experience in work environment is needed. The result makes the foundation for the presented solutions. The solutions are that the project leader and BAS-P should be two different persons and that the handover from BAS-P to BAS-U should be carried out thru a physical meeting between the two of them. By dividing the projection leader and BAS-P in to two different people it allows BAS-P to solemnly focus on the work environment issues while the projection leader can focus on propelling the project forward.

    Laser scanning is a method of surveying that has evolved rapidly in recentyears. The technique is based on a laser scanner set up, which can document a structureusing pulsed laser beams. Each time the laser hits a surface it is partly reflectedback to the scanner that stores the point. By using strategically placed targets, storedpoints from different scans can be merged into a point cloud. A point cloud is avisualization of the scanned object with a very high accuracy. The point cloud is thenimported into appropriate software to create a simplification of the object, which thencan be usedin a design or construction tool.The large amount of information that point clouds result in is oftendifficult to manageand simplifications must be done. The purpose of this study is toexplore the possibility to skip this step. In collaboration with Ma'ttja'nstAB, the market will be searched for appropriate software and plug-ins that can handlethis. Some criteria for good software are being able to automatically generatesurfaces, checking the accuracy of the result and in a user-friendly way be able tonavigate through the point cloud. In this study point clouds from Autodesk were used,this were practical because no conversion of the format was needed.Autodesk Revit Architecture and AutoCAD were the design tools that were selectedfor this study. These two programs have recently developed a format compatiblewith large point clouds. Plugins that werealso looked into are Scan To BIM (Revit), ShapeExtraction (AutoCAD) and Kubit pointcloud (AutoCAD). All programs arecompatible with the point cloud format PCG11.This study could establish that it is possible to skip the simplification

    Through 13 interviews, this chapter describes the way in which Swedish ‘onshore’ IT consultants construct the identity of both themselves and their Indian ‘offshore’ colleagues. The chapter highlight how a rhetoric of cultural difference can function as a deflective shield hiding intersections of other explanations. The intersections hiding behind the notion of ‘culture’ in this case were closely tied to power and identified as 1) a construction of ‘the Swedish way of work’ as superior, 2) the Indian team being ‘dehumanized’ and organized as “a machine”, evaluated with quantitative performance measurements, 3) the Swedes’ power proximity as well as 4) the Indian site working with poorer technical infrastructure.

    The consolidation of the wind power industry in the last years requires companies to optimize their performance of the delivery of the wind energy asset’s lifecycle they cover in order to stay in the market. The Asset Management Standard ISO 55000 is a general framework applicable for companies which work with infrastructure assets. As the delivery of wind energy assets is very specific in all aspects of its lifecycle delivery, the Thesis identifies that there is a need for an Asset Management framework which is specific for the wind power industry.This Thesis uses the ISO 55000 and PAS 55 as a base for the development of a wind power industry specific Asset Management framework. The focus is on the lifecycle delivery of the wind energy assets which it traces back to the other Asset Management (AM) aspects. The different wind energy asset’s lifecycle phases Pre-Study, Planning, Construction, Operation and Maintenance and Decommissioning are explained and appended with related working tasks as well as their relation to the overall AM framework. The other AM groups AM Strategy & Objectives, AM Decision Making, Organization & People, Asset Information and Risk & Review are given an introduction to the specific topics.Asset Management is found to be a useful instrument to improve overall company performance and should be considered to be implemented by companies in the wind power industry to bring down the Levelized Cost of Energy of wind power and gain competitive advantage also against fossil fuels as sources of energy production to replace them in a near as possible future.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines the Swedish detailed planning process from a time and money perspective, and also points out the deficiencies of the process. The detailed planning process currently receives much criticism from both the society and the industry. It is usually considered as a brake in the production of new housing in Sweden.

    A few of the municipalities’ administration time in the planning process in Stockholm was compared and analyzed and it was concluded that the average process takes between 30-60 months. However if a zoning plan is appealed the process extends usually between 4 to 12 months. In Stockholm County, a fourth of all the zoning plans are appealed, but only 1.3% of these leads to repealing of the plan. This number questions to some extent the democracy in today’s society, how many of the citizens’ complaints are actually accepted since that number also include complaints from authorities like the county administrative board.

    To obtain an understanding of the developer’s cost of the planning process a couple of housing projects in the municipality of Stockholm and Solna were examined. The investigation revealed that the cost may vary anywhere between 650,000 up to 6.5 million SEK. The cost of the zoning plan proved to be highly correlated with the time spent.

    The recommendation from our side is to increase the exchange of information between all parties, including the party concerned, leading to benefits of the process as a whole. Less public opposition leads to a smoother process, while increasing the cooperation between the municipality and the developer do as well.

    Stockholm Royal Seaport is one of Europe´s largest urban development projects. The city of Stockholm has ambitious environmental goals and a vision for Stockholm Royal Seaport to develop into a world-class environmental urban district. In order to achieve the aspiring goals, requirements are set in the agreement with property developers with land allocation. The city of Stockholm offers a capacity development programme to assure fulfilling of the requirements and simultaneously educate the property developers.

    The aim of this thesis is to examine how the requirements and capacity development programme in Norra 2, the third leg in the development of Stockholm Royal Seaport, has contributed to spreading knowledge among property developers. The thesis is limited to investigation energy requirements. With focus on the technical solutions used to obtain a low energy usage and what the developers will carry on to future projects.

    The analysis indicates that the capacity development programme has a positive effect on the developers´s collaboration to achieve more sustainable buildings. Strict verifying of the requirements has been a contributing factor to the positive results in Stockholm Royal Seaport. Several technical solutions are incorporated in the buildings in order to meet the requirements of energy savings. This leads to advanced systems that are difficult to manage and has beeenan issue fort the developers. Another issue is ambiguous and contradictory requirements that according to the developers has taken a consideralble amount of time and resources to fulfil. Setting requirements is important in developing more sustainable buildings. If demans are not made a lot of companies will chose the cheap and simple way to maximize profits. Continuing setting requirements and having a dialouge between stakeholders in an eraly stage is essential for a continuing sustainable development.

    This examination paper has been commissioned by the Tunnel and Bridge unit of Ramböll in Stockholm. The purpose of the report is to describe the procedure of constructing a calculation template in Excel for the designing of a retaining wall, based on the principles of Lean design. The intention of making processes more efficient in order to save time and improve quality exists within most businesses. In management literature, one reappearing tool for making processes more efficient in the construction consulting industry is called Lean design. Lean design can be applied to all design and calculation processes for different types of bridges and structures. This report describes the background to Lean design and the process of trying to implement its principles in the making of a calculation template for the designing of a retaining wall. The purpose is to enable a more efficient designing process, where calculations are standardized, and the results of the process are comprehensibly presented to other actors within the consulting business, such as reviewers and CAD designers. The template is to be used for designing retaining walls in different situations depending on, for instance, construction and soil material, geometry and loads. Consequently, a major part of this report has been devoted to standardizing calculations for load effects and bearing capacity in the construction, depending on different possible settings. Designing is regulated by Eurocodes and national annexes, why it is important to refer to relevant chapters in the regulations. The regulations depend on settings and the field of application for the construction. Therefore, some generalizations of the design process have been made. However, during the process it has been clear that implementation of Lean design is one possible way of making construction design more efficient when it comes to time and quality.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines how the three urban development projects: Nydal, Norrtälje Harbor and Rosendal address the energy use in future buildings and how their energy strategies are articulated in relation to requirements specified in the SGBC’s certification system Citylab Action. The building Smaragden in Rosendal has been used as a model of a future building in the two other district areas in order to calculate the energy performance in each project, this by using the energy use simulation software IDA ICE. Further on the energy mix for each district area has been analyzed in order to determine the renewability rate for them. The results shows that the energy performance of Rosendal was 60,8 kWh/m2/year and the heat mix was only 7,92 % renewable. Nydal has an energy performance of 45,4 kWh/m2/year and their heat mix was 76,80 % renewable. Norrtälje Harbor had the energy performance of 70,9 kWh/m2/year and their heat mix had the renewability rate of 79,60 %. Comparing these three projects, the Nydal project was the most sustainable when it came to the energy performance since it had the lowest rate. Norrtälje Harbor had the highest percentage of renewable energy sources for their heat mix since they use almost 100 percent biofuels. Considering the Citylab Action certification, both Norrtälje Harbor and Rosendal have chosen to certificate their urban development projects according to Citylab. The Nydal project has not yet chosen the Citylab Action certification but they are considering the idea of following its principles anyway and may in the future get certificated according to Citylab Action. Looking at the energy strategies of Uppsala-, Norrtälje- and Knivsta municipality, Uppsala had the most structured energy strategy. They have specified clear goals, measures and follow-up process. Knivsta-and Norrtälje municipality are going to develop their energy strategies in the near future.

    Abstract [en]

    Converting coal to a liquid, commonly known as coal-to-liquids (CTL), can supply liquid fuels and has been successfully used in several countries, particularly in South Africa. However, it has not become a major contributor to the global oil supply. Increasing awareness of the scarcity of oil and rising oil prices has increased the interest in coal liquefaction. This paper surveys CTL technology, economics and environmental performance. Understanding the fundamental aspects of coal liquefaction technologies is vital for planning and policy-making since future CTL production will be integrated in a much larger global energy and liquid fuel production system.

    The economic analysis shows that many CTL studies assume conditions that are optimistic at best. In addition, the strong risk for a CTL plant to become a financial black hole is highlighted. This helps to explain why China has recently slowed down the development of its CTL program.

    The technical analysis investigates the coal consumption of CTL. Generally, a yield of between 1–2 barrels/ton coal can be achieved while the technical limit seems to be 3 barrels/ton coal. This puts a strict limit on future CTL capacity imposed by future coal production, regardless of other factors such as economic viability, emissions or environmental concern. For example, assuming that 10% of world coal production can be diverted to CTL, the contribution to the liquid fuel supply will be limited to only a few million barrels per day (Mb/d). This prevents CTL from becoming a viable mitigation plan for liquid fuel shortage on a global scale.

    However, it is still possible for individual nations to derive a significant share of their fuel supply from CTL but those nations must also have access to equally significant coal production capacity. It is unrealistic to claim that CTL provides a feasible solution to liquid fuels shortages created by peak oil. At best, it can be only a minor contributor and must be combined with other strategies to ensure future liquid fuel supply.

    This thesis has been conducted in collaboration with JM AB, Region

    Öst, based at their office in Uppsala. Below follows a summary of

    the study.

    Problem

    For the major contractors in Sweden, the costs after the costumers

    access are high. According to Boverket the costs can be as high as

    1.3 billion SEK annually. In addition of the costs of the work

    itself, the companies risks dissatisfied customers when the extra

    work often is considered as a disturbance.

    To investigate this matter, the purpose of this thesis is to answer

    the following questions:

    - What are the most common errors reported during the warranty

    period?

    - Can the errors be addressed at an earlier stage?

    - Is poor purchasing a contributing factor to the high costs during

    the warranty period?

    - Can a different ventilation system reduce the amount of errors?

    Method

    The purpose of the study is to identify the most common errors that

    occur during the warranty period, to summarize these and give

    concrete suggestions of measures to reduce the errors. The report is

    based on interviews, statistics of the errors from JM Region Öst

    during year 2015 and the analysis of the customers feedback during

    the warranty period of eight projects. In addition, the authors have

    chosen to compare two different ventilations systems to see if the

    change of system can reduce the number of error reports concerning

    ventilation.

    Conclusions

    The study shows an even distribution of errors from the different

    categories. The reports from JM Region Öst during year 2015 and the

    average from the selected projects have similar distribution. Of the

    total number of error reports from JM Region Öst during year 2015,

    20.1 percent belonged to the category Plumbing. The same category

    had, in the authors compilation of the eight projects, 20.2 percent

    of the reports. From this result it can be concluded that the

    percentage of problems reported from each category is about the

    same, no matter the size of the project.

    In the interviews, the most common errors and what causes these,

    were discussed. Because of the many errors to the category Plumbing,

    this was the main subject. During the interviews it was discovered

    that different actors blames the problems on each other. However,

    dirt in the pipe system in combination with a low water pressure was

    considered to be the biggest cause of problems to the category.

    The study also shows that a complicated list of responsibilities

    generates costs for the after-sales department. The reason is that

    the process of appointing a responsible actor becomes hard. The

    consequence of this is that staff from the after-sales department is

    forced to make visits to the projects only to be able to redirect

    the matter to the responsible subcontractor.

The commission's reportlaid the foundations for a new law whichwas adopted by the Swedish parliament onthe 20th of June 2010 and is scheduledto come into effect on the 2nd of May2011.The purpose of this thesis has been toexamine the changes made in the new law,primarily from a civil-rights point ofview, focusing on the appeal process.This is a highly interesting subjectconsidering one reason behind the newlaw was to simplify and streamline theplanning process while keeping civilrights intact.Through a comprehensive literature studyand interviews with experts the currentplanning process was mapped out andrelevant changes in the new law wereexamined. After the study had beenconcluded we were able to distinguishseveral areas that underwent especiallyinteresting changes;The requirement of a plan program wasremoved and the exhibition process wasremoved and replaced by a writtenreview. Individuals were given thepossibility of requesting a plan notice.The different spatial plan documentswere merged into one single document andthe number of responsible authoritiesfor spatial plans is no longer limitedto one.The study has shown that the aspirationfor a more effective spatial planningprocess has mostly been conducted at theexpense of individual rights.The single biggest obstacle forachieving a democratic planning processis learning how the law works and howthe spatial planning process isimplemented, this is has been proven tobe a very hard and time consuming taskfor individuals to undertake.

The report ismade in collaboration with WSP Group and will briefly describe howphotogrammetry and laser scanning, also known as Lidar, works and how those areused in the construction business today. Then the focus will be on how gathered datais handled today, how outsourcing of data should be approached and if there are anyconsequences if data is handled in the wrong way. Interviews have been made with allparts in the UAS business. That includes authorities as Transporstyrelsen,Försvarsmakten. Interviews have also been conducted with consultants that operatethese systems, distributors of the different systems and solicitor. What can been seenis that, today, outsourcing and cloud services are not used to a great extent andtherefore not many have felt the obligation to familiarize themselves with theregulations.Based on the interviews and studies of relevant laws the conclusion can be made that,even if the purpose is not to publish the material when you outsource, it should stillbe treated as a publication.The penalties, when material is handled in the wrong way, are usually up to one yearin prison but if there is severe mismanagement it can be a matter of national securityand can be classified as espionage. Then the penalties are much harder.

    Abstract [en]

    The EU funded Climate for Culture (CfC) Project is finalized to forecast the impact ofclimate change on either indoor or outdoor Cultural Heritage and advise on relatedrisks. CfC has produced high-resolution thematic maps over Europe to highlight theexpected changes and related risks for a number of key materials, building types,deterioration mechanisms for the near and far future based on two emissionscenarios as developed by IPCC. The procedure to obtain a thematic map is asfollows: to simulate outdoor climate change; to pass from outdoor to indoor climatechange through building simulation and case studies measurements; to use damagefunctions and literature results to evaluate potential risk for buildings and objects; tomap the above results for advice and stakeholders use. This methodology hasproduced 55,650 thematic maps of future climate induced risks to historic buildingsand collections in their interiors. The results can be used for climate change impactassessments and for planning adaption and mitigation measures in view ofpreventive conservation or other applications, e.g. human health, energyconsumption, cultural tourism. This paper presents some of the main projectoutcomes.

    Commissioned for this report is Ramboll, Bridge and Tunnel Unit in Stockholm. The

    idea throughout the work has been to primarily help bridge designers compiling

    advice and instructions on how fatigue verification for railway bridges in reinforced

    concrete shall be performed under the new rules, the Eurocodes.

    After the introduction of the Eurocodes in 2011 has major problems emerged among

    designers around Sweden. In some areas, it differs in the calculation rules compared

    with rules from the Swedish Transport Administration and the National Board of

    Housing, Building and Planning calculation. Fatigue verification is one area where the

    new calculation rules are different from the past.

    A large part of the report has been to interpret and find the relevant information in

    the Eurocodes concerning fatigue. When questions or doubts have surfaced, this has

    been discussed with Elisabeth Helsing at the Swedish Transport Administration and

    bridge designers at Ramboll.

    The result is a report where the structure is organized in the way that the bridge

    designers can move from cover to cover and realize that fatigue verification in reality

    follows the same order as the report's sections. The issues have been resolved and

    reported regularly through the report with complementary findings as a result.

    Some of the greatest advances in the report are the load combinations to be used for

    the method for fatigue verification, how the dynamic factor and the magnification

    factor should be used and how the trainloads to be designed for each method for

    fatigue verification.

    Purpose:

    To use theory about organization, stakeholders, knowledge management and powerstructures to analyze the challenges regarding life-cycle assessments in theconstruction industry in Sweden. The study aims to provide a deeper understandingof why the challenges exists and how companies can work to manage them.

    Research questions:

    How are life-cycle assessments used within the construction industry today?- What challenges exists in the use of life-cycle assessments today?- What stakeholders affect the use of life-cycle assessments today?- How does the organisation within construction companies affect the use oflifecycle assessment?- How are life-cycle assessments affected by the different degree of knowledge thestakeholders have?

    Methodology:

    This is a study of inductive character and is performed as a case study at a largeconstruction company. The study starts with an initial literature study and identifiesrelevant theory to answer the research questions. Then the gathering of empiricaldata is made by industry and government reports, interviews and a focus group.The findings were then analysed and compared to the theory.

    Results:

    The results show that the client is the stakeholder with the highest influence of theuse of life-cycle assessments. However, this stakeholder category was identified tohave insufficient knowledge about life-cycle assessments and the benefits of it.There is also no accepted standard for comparison between different actors.Therefore, demand remain low but the study show that the knowledge and demandfrom clients are growing and will do so in the future. The organisation need to workcloser to the suppliers and external contractors to efficiently conduct life-cycleassessments. This could lead to competitive advantage as the demand for theservice grows.

    Abstract [en]

    Urban agriculture is a current topic and this study examines the possibility of cultivating on balconies in the city. The study was performed at Uppsala University and examines, from a structural engineering perspective, how different existing balcony/terrace structures are affected by cultivation. A cultivation balcony defined in the study as a balcony/terrace which is specifically designed for cultivation. Three units of study have been selected according to this criterion. Four factors were examined, these were loads, moisture/water, economy and cultivation. The study was conducted by studying the detailed drawings and interviewing the people concerned.

     

    The results show that one of the constructions is to be recommended but that there is great potential for developments in the area. A construction that is almost detached from the facade, showed the best results. This structure showed little influence and the least possibility of damage as a result of cultivation. The study also shows that cultivation is possible on a, of the author defined, standard balcony.

    The study has shown that there are few examples of the cultivation balconies in the current situation. The study also provides a suggestion of a design and construction of a cultivation balcony where different elements of the examined structures combined. The study also suggests areas that should be studied further for a development in the field of cultivation of alternative venues.

    Uppsala like many other Swedish cities is affected by heavy housing shortage, in terms of too few existing flats and residents within the city limits. Every semester thousands of new students are facing the same problems of finding themselves adequate accommodation. The waiting lists for flats and student-dorms are getting longer for each year, and the situation is just getting worse. Simultaneously, Uppsala’s ambition is to increase its population and expand as a Swedish metropolitan, according to the Swedish governmental environment goals.

     

    This paper investigates and analyses the possibilities of expanding a city’s population by building high-rise buildings. A city developed with high-rise buildings will provide different conditions and penalties than what we have formerly been used to in Sweden. Therefore we have analysed the eventual outcome in a few different areas which would most likely be affected by an upcoming progress including constructions of high-rise buildings. The examined areas are production costs, energy efficacy, cityscape and community related issues. To set clear boundaries regarding the reports extent, we have chosen to focus on Uppsala as a city in particular. Ultimately, the results of different studies and comparisons have been discussed with the origin of promoting the benefits of different solutions. The report reveals that high-rise constructions could contribute with considerably more positive outcomes than people without deep understanding within the subject could possibly imagine. Other, more social related questions in this context need attention as well. For example: How would it work on a practical level for the inhabitants of Uppsala if the buildings suddenly were a lot higher than what they used to be? Would these buildings take attention away from the Uppsala castle and the cathedral? Would Uppsala even remain a pleasant place to live in? Questions such as these together with other social related issues have been discussed in this report as well. The report has been carried out in collaboration with the building contractor JM AB, from which data and information on various intervals have been taken.

    Abstract [en]

    In this study, efforts to improve energy efficiency in seven housing cooperatives associated to the citizens' initiative HS2020, were studied. The aim of the study was to identify and compile the energysaving measures that have been carried out by the housing cooperatives since 2013. Furthermore the study aims to investigate how much the presented measures can lower the energy consumption. Two of the housing cooperatives served as examples and the expected saving from the energy saving measures were investigated using the simulation program VIP Energy. To better understand the motives and incentives for the work, interviews were made with the board members of the housing cooperatives.

    The results of the study show that four out of the seven investigated cooperatives have already reached the goal of a specific energy uselower than 100 kWh/m2/year. The most effective energy-saving measuresare the installation of exhaust air heat pump and the lowering of the indoor temperature. The simulation results for the installation of heat pumps showed that the heating demand was reduced by 55.4 percent, and the specific energy consumption was reduced by 30 percent.

    In summary, the HS2020 is on the right track to reach the goals set for 2020, but further work is required to get there. It is of utmost importance that the cooperatives strengthen their expertise in energyrelated questions, and HS2020 has an important role in this work.

    The instrumentation installed on dams have increased, which creates a demand for the dam owners to monitor and analyze data from the instrumentation. Swedish dam owners use the computer program IntelliDAM to monitor data from the dams. IntelliDAM can for example be used to create diagrams and tables, edit incorrect data and to determine alarm values, which can increase dam safety.

    This thesis aims to create a support to use IntelliDAM for analysis and evaluation of an embankment dam. The support aims to be easy to use, to create an overview of the instrumentation data, to be used to evaluate the situation in the dam, and to be used when creating similar supports for other dams. Based on information about embankment dams and instrumentation, pore pressure was set as the main factor in the evaluation. Secondary factors in the evaluation were turbidity, water flow, precipitation, and temperature.

    To create the support the program MapInfo initially was used to generate layouts of the dam with dots representing instrumentation. The layouts from MapInfo were uploaded to IntelliDAM and connected to instrumentation data and diagrams. An instruction describing the process for creating the support was written.

    Finally, the author of this thesis has discovered flaws in the program IntelliDAM and in the instrumentation data, which affects the created support. The information would improve with correct data and possibilities to visualize data based on other variables than time.

    Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. This landlocked country in the west has an extremely warm climate. Temperatures over 45°C are not uncommon and there is an almost constant need to keep the buildings cool to maintain a temperate indoor climate. Air-conditioning is an option to maintain the temperature but it overloads the power grid and only a few people can afford it. This thesis examines, through laboratory experiments, the thermal and mechanical properties that can be obtained by vibrating clayey soil and mixing it with water, lime or cement and organic fiber (Bissap). The report also examines different building projects utilizing local materials, both of a traditional and more modern nature.Energy required to produce building elements of soil is negligible compared to that of concrete and steel. Soil can be used in constructing houses but it is sensitive to water.The insulation is inadequate for a passive house so an extra layer of insulating material is required.The experiments performed during this project were inconclusive so it is impossible, from the results in this paper, to say if vibration is a good method for forming a building material of soil. The high water content needed, is however a major problem, shrinkage was about 20% and cracks were hard to avoid. Further investigations into the subject is necessary.

    BIM has been a trend in recent years when it comes to design and construction of

    new buildings. However, there has been less talk about what happens to BIM models

    after the construction phase.

    This issue has been raised at the Forsmark construction documentation department.

    This thesis aims to look at how the information in a BIM model can be transferred to

    facility management and GIS systems and thus add value, even after the construction

    phase.

    Questions raises how such an exchange might look like and whether it is reliable.

    How should a claim be brought to planners for such an exchange to work.

    This thesis tested some of the most common methods for this kind of exchange of

    information from BIM models to facility management and GIS. It was formats like IFC,

    Fi2xml and a database connectivity that was analyzed by a computer simulation of a

    model provided by Forsmark. The model consisted of an existing office building at

    Forsmark, modeled in Autodesk Revit.

    The results indicate that the formats tested require a precise plotting of the models.

    The loss of information that came to light in the simulation could be attributed to

    failure modeling in Revit. Even such things as naming of areas must be consistent. To

    achieve more efficient naming process, test where carried out to deal with

    parameters outside the Revit environment. However, it did not work optimally.

    Support for some parameters was lost and the information that was built up in the

    database was too extensive.

    numerous situations and the technology

    needed to achieve AR on a tablet. A

    conceptual video which shows a possible

    future use of the technique has also been

    made as part of the thesis work.

    In order for construction projects to be completed within the specified time limit while at the same time be financially sustainable it requires thorough preparation and an extensive planning. Most essential is the groundwork and the design that determines the project's progress. There are many aspects to consider in order to avoid inconveniences such as delay, litigation, unexpected cost etcetera. If mistakes are made in an early stage it is very likely that the error will follow the process and become an expensive correction cost towards the later part of the project. In other words, it is expensive to rectify defects later on. Many times more expensive than if the deficiencies can be found before the construction phase begins.

    It is up to the client to define what they want to have built. When the idea for a project has been brought to the client he/she must describe and explain the construction in detail. It is from these documents that contractors will base their tender in the hope of performing the contract. This basis is called for enquiry documents and includes specifications, blueprints and descriptions of the project. Inadequate enquiry documents may lead to major consequences. Consequences that often is easy to avoid through a detailed and thorough groundwork. That is unfortunately not the case in the construction industry today.

    This bachelor thesis is intended to analyse and identify the development of enquiry documents and investigate the common shortcomings. The work has been carried out for eleven weeks in collaboration with Skanska Sweden and creates an awareness and understanding of the enquiry documents value to the reader in the industry. The study also deals with procurement process, which is the stage where the enquiry documents plays its part. Common deficiencies in the enquiry documents will be presented as a conclusion combined with the flaws impact on project time and project cost. Finally, there are also suggestions on how common deficiencies can be avoided.

    To maintain a stable power grid, it is important for electricity producers to meetsociety's need for electricity. This need will vary depending on time of day and eventhe season. Being able to accumulate energy when demand is low, and regain energywhen demand increases, is therefore important. Hydropower is one of the energysources that are easiest to regulate. Having a stable and secure hydropower istherefore important for society.In this thesis one problem that can occur in a hydroelectric plant has been studied,namely alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in concrete. This reaction causes the concrete toswell, due to a formation of gel when alkali and silicon react together.A specific hydropower station has been studied in detail, namely Malgomajhydropower plant. This is a facility that is located in an area where, unlike the rest ofSweden, there are stone materials that have a moderately rapid reaction with respectto the ASR.Problems for this hydroelectric power station have been observed because of swellingof the concrete structure surrounding the turbine. To get an estimate prognosis ofhow the hydropower plant will deform in the future, a finite element method-model(FEM-model) has be created of the problem area. This model is calibrated againstmeasured data and will then form the basis for an appreciation of the hydropowerstation's remaining lifetime.The results in this thesis show that the deformations are small but significant for thehydropower station's opportunity to continue its energy production.

    The building and plant sectors represent a large part of Sweden’s energy use. Putting energy requirements in public procurement as a tool for reducing energy consumption in the building and plant sectors is therefor an opportunity that operators can take advantage of. The aim of this thesis was to map the energy requirements in procurement that operators in the public sector use today in building and plant projects. The analysis was made with respect to if the energy requirements corresponded to the parts with large energy use in building and plant projects and also in which way energy requirements in procurement are written in the contract. From the mapping were also good examples further investigated to serve as recommendations to operators who want to develop their work with energy requirements in procurement.

    The study show that participants in the building sector use the greatest number of energy requirements in the operational phase of the building, which studies have shown to be the phase with greatest energy use. The plant sector uses most energy requirements for fuel, vehicles and machinery used in the construction phase. Building materials are also a major energy user in both sectors, but neither of them has energy requirements for that. Both sectors consider more requirements on the service that the contractor shall perform than on the contractor. The study also shows that efforts to make sure that the requirements are fulfilled are a critical point where there are major flaws today. The best operators identified in case studies are Dalarna County, Akademiska Hus, Transport Administration and Tyreso municipality. Based on the mapping, these operators all proved to have distinctive energy requirements or working method with energy requirements in contracts.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines how the moisture content of a stone wall from the 15th century varies with different types of climate control. The simulations in this report is based on measured data from sensors placed inside and outside Härnevi Church north of Enköping. The measured data are processed to simulate different climate control strategies in the church porch. The simulated climate control strategies are temperature control and air-dehumidification, the systems are controlled against either a mold risk curve or a fixed maximum value for the relative humidity. The simulations are performed with the program WUFI Pro 6.1; which performs onedimensional hygrothermal calculations of building component crosssections and is an alternative to the traditional Glaser-Method.Many climate simulations have been performed, though only four are fully accounted for in this dissertation. Simulations that have not resulted in surface conditions below the mold risk curve LIM I has not been included in the investigation process. Simulation results are based on climate controls against "fixed relative humidity max 71%" and "mold risk curve LIM I-10 percentage points". The results show that the desorption process of the wall is similar to all four simulations but provides different absorption processes, control against the mould risk curve allows the wall a faster water content build up. The simulations show that control against the mould risk curve results in a greater moisture storage in the wall during the winter months; compared to control the climate against a constant relative humidity. During summertime there is no significant difference in moisture storage between the various climate control simulations. The operating time to control against the mould risk curve for one year is roughly 1000 hours less than control against constant relative humidity. When considering the results in this report together with Härnevi church's current heating system, this dissertation recommends a climate control based on temperature control against a mould risk curve. The results also show the importance of investigating the difference between the mold ratio in the air and on the surface of the wall to perform a proper and safe climate control.

    Social sustainability is a concept of increasing relevance in the construction industry. But there are different interpretations of the concept and it is difficult to grasp its meaning. It has also been found that social sustainability often is neglected in urban construction projects in favor of the ecological and economic aspects. It is common that municipalities have high ambitions for sustainable urban development, but the social dimension is difficult to handle. They are struggling with social challenges suchas housing shortage and segregation. In the new area Rosendal in Uppsala, the municipality are focusing on sustainability and social values are promoted. But how is social sustainability implemented in practice? 

    The aim of this thesis is to investigate and evaluate how builders interpret the ambitions and issues of Uppsala municipality, in regard to social sustainability for Rosendal, stage two. Factors that may conflict with social sustainability are examined as well as the definition of the term itself. The goal of the study is to contribute with relevant knowledge to the municipality of Uppsala for the continued planning and development of social sustainability. It may also aid other actors in their work for social sustainability. 

    Four representatives of construction companies who intend to build in Rosendal stage two, are interviewed. To gain an additional perspective on social sustainability a professor in sustainable urban development is also interviewed.

    The results of these interviews, as well as a literature study and document review, are processed in the analysis. The result of the study shows that the interpretation of social sustainability varies within the industry. The municipality of Uppsala have a clear vision for Rosendal regarding to social sustainability, but it needs to be narrowed down. A factor that may conflict with the social sustainability is housing costs. The survey indicates that cooperation between several actors, political decisions and an overall thinking - which extends beyond the property lines - are needed to achieve the ambition for a socially sustainable area. There is no given solution but the ability to customize each project according to its needs will lead to concrete solutions. In order to get a wider view of the situation in the construction industry and to strengthen the result, studies with more extensive interviews should be conducted.

    In this thesis an explorative study was undertaken with the aim to study how a number of private care providers, as well as politicians and officials from councils in and around the Stockholm and Uppsala counties, think about the future of the Swedish elderly care from a property perspective, i.e. homes for the elderly. The analysis shows that there is a demand for capacity in 6 out of 16 municipalities, and that the property is an important part of this capacity, and the fulfillment of it. This was mainly due to the cost of capital, but also because of several other factors such as lack of land, a wish to guide the design, ideology, and in many cases a wish to use the property as an instrument of domination to control private health care providers.

    Also, the property was show to be connected to economic competition, to freedom of choice, and to quality. The problems related to the property in the market for elderly care still remains to be solved. The writer of this thesis suggests that, among other things, patients should be treated as customers to a larger extent and problems that counter competition must be solved.

    Lastly, the writer has analyzed the situation in the Swedish market for elderly care from a value creation perspective. It is suggested that value can be created in both the network and within the company, even if the companies are competing, and thus ought to compete and not cooperate.

    Abstract [en]

    In this thesis the principles that govern the internal rent for a group of retirement homes in Enköping municipality is examined. Also the operation and maintenance cost levels are compared to other municipal-owned homes for the elderly in the rest of Sweden. Facility managers in Enköping municipality today consider the internal rent to be on a too low level. Therefore they cannot maintain the houses to the extent they consider necessary. 

    A comparison of the maintenance costs, media consumption, management expenses and several other expenses against the statistics from all of Sweden makes it possible to form an opinion on the current level. 

    The internal rent has been examined in two ways. First, by examining how well the municipality administration follows its own directives and policy documents and, secondly, by comparing the governing document with the available literature. 

    Key comparison shows that Enköping historically have had low amounts of both planned and unplanned maintenance expenses. A change has occurred in recent years and maintenance costs have increased significantly when large maintenance needs have arisen. Their written policy on internal rent has basically not been updated since it was written in 1990. This thesis culminates in a recommendation to both the municipal administration and facility management. They must begin to monitor key indicators and measure effectiveness. Municipal leaders need to update and establish guidelines for internal rent. If the amount of maintenance is raised to an acceptable level the rent also needs to be raised to avoid a deficit.
