Digital Innovation as Design of Digital Practice: Doctors as Designers in Healthcare2018In: Proceedings of the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), 2018, p. 4594-4601Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Medical professionals are increasingly assuming the role of maker and creator. At the same time, digital innovations, as part of evolving information infrastructures, are becoming increasingly prevalent in healthcare. In this paper, we adopt a Schönian approach to understand how a medical professional, who is not an IS designer by trade, engages in the design of digital practice - turning what may appear as a failed digital innovation effort into a successful design of digital practice. Our inquiry suggests three pragmatic principles that call for further investigation: (a) professionals can make a significant contribution to design work by inventing means for fact-based, reflective engagement with the situation; (b) the reorganization of work practice involves organizational design, information system design, and communication design; and (c) developing design as digital practice entails the development of fact-based design practice and must engage practical theories.

Symbolic Action Research in Information Systems: Introduction to the Special Issue2014In: Management Information Systems Quarterly, ISSN 0276-7783, E-ISSN 2162-9730, Vol. 38, no 4, p. 1187-1200Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This special issue introduction explores the need to study information systems as symbolic action systems, defines broadly the research domain and related assumptions, notes the origins of this perspective, articulates its key lines of study, and discusses the state of the field in light of published research. The essay also positions the three papers of the special issue in the broader Information Systems (IS) discourse and notes their specific contribution in bridging so far unconnected streams of research and expanding research methods amenable to symbolic action research. This introductory essay furthermore observes some unique challenges in pulling together the special issue that invited the editors to combat against the tendency to approach communicative processes associated with information systems as primarily psychological processes. In closing we note several lines of inquiry that can strengthen future studies of symbolic action including better design theories, more flexible and open use of methods, and attentive use of rich traditions that inform symbolic action research in IS.

Improving female character design: Visually enhancing a female character’s personality and role in games  through combing fashion- and game design2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report started with the guideline project that revolved around two problems in the game industry, the hypersexualization of female characters and their stereotypical designs in games, and a wish to solve these problems. Fashion was chosen as a new approach to solving them and the question formulation for the guideline project was: how can we incorporate fashion in order to strengthen a female characters personality, role and overall design in games?

Three methods were used; firstly a systematic literature review to gather knowledge about the fashion industry as well as the game industry’s character design process. Secondly, the creation of the guideline, “The design handbook – how to improve female character design”, which would serve by presenting a solution to the problem. Thirdly, qualitative interviews to test whether or not the guideline could serve as a possible solution against the problems of sexist and stereotypical designs and if it could overall improve female character design in games.

The results of the qualitative interviews deemed the project a success; nine out of ten interviewees answered that it would serve as a solution against the problem of both hypersexualization and stereotypical designs. The results of the guideline project and the interviews answered the bachelor’s thesis’ question formulation about how to improve female character design through fashion in the following way:

    • Be inclusive. The priority should be to design interesting characters, regardless of gender.
    •  Know who your character is. Give the character a complex and interesting personality and design with that personality in mind; it should be strengthened through all the other design choices (be it color, silhouette or outfit details).
    • Make it believable. The outfit needs to work like a second narrator and should not contradict the setting, the personality or the character’s role.

Towards Equitable, Diverse, and Inclusive science collaborations: The Multimessenger Diversity Network2022In: 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021) / [ed] Alexander Kappes; Bianca Keilhauer, Sissa Medialab Srl , 2022, article id 1383Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Multimessenger Diversity Network (MDN), formed in 2018, extends the basic principle of multimessenger astronomy - that working collaboratively with different approaches enhances understanding and enables previously impossible discoveries - to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in science research collaborations. With support from the National Science Foundation INCLUDES program, the MDN focuses on increasing EDI by sharing knowledge, experiences, training, and resources among representatives from multimessenger science collaborations. Representatives to the MDN become engagement leads in their collaboration, extending the reach of the community of practice. An overview of the MDN structure, lessons learned, and how to join are presented.

Online Digital Media Practices on Twitter By Korean Pop Idol BTS and Fans:  A Case on BTS (방탄소년단) and their Fans2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research conducted focused on the media practices by a South Korean band « BTS » and the named fandom « A.R.M.Y ». Through the use of Twitter, the research consisted in making use of BTS’s Twitter posts to study what they are doing on social media in order to engage fans, as well as the type of practices that are being executed. The second part of the study investigated the fandoms’ interaction, participation, and online engagement in regard to the media content tweeted by the south Korean band. Mix methods were used in order to answer the three research questions that were presented for this research. An analysis of media practices was conducted through a content analysis then followed by an online survey. The analysis highlighted that shared practices and regular media use were an important factor in the creation of a participatory culture. Culture was also shown to be an important component to the generation of fan engagement and artist interaction with their respective fandom. In addition, through fans high participation in online activities, the investigation was able to demonstrate that fans developed shared practices and shared identities, which were emerged from their activities. Furthermore, BTS members have shown that their cultural habits were important for engaging fans.

Overall, the results of this study concluded that media practices are various and are executed in ways that allow the South Korean band to keep an online relationship with their fans through diverse media content that is published on their own personal managed Twitter account. In response to that, fans have shown a constant interactions and engagements by liking, retweeting, commenting to the bands’ tweets, along with other different activities that have been demonstrated in the analysis chapter.

So Far Away, Yet So Close: A Study on How Intimacy Is Attempted to Be Produced in Girlfriend Roleplay ASMR Videos on YouTube2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how ASMRtists, people that create ASMR videos, attempt to create intimacy in their videos on YouTube. ASMR stands for Audio Sensory Meridian Response and is a tingling sensation within the body that can be triggered by various stimuli, such as visuals and sounds. This study processes girlfriend roleplay ASMR, which is when female ASMRtists roleplay being the viewer's girlfriend. ASMR and girlfriend roleplay ASMR are relatively new phenomena which have emerged through digitalization and its reconstruction of the concept of intimacy. It has yet to be scientifically researched and this study contributes to the research gap. Through conducting semiotic video analyzes, this study explores how the ASMRtists attempt to produce intimacy in their girlfriend roleplay ASMR videos. The result landed in that the ASMRtists attempt to produce intimacy in various creative ways that override the screen. It is likely that the ASMRtists attempt to generate both an emotional and physical connection to the viewer through combining elements from real-life relationships and different ASMR triggers. Through making use of theories of dramaturgy, the male gaze and gender displays, the study has analyzed the material and uncovered norms and structures in society that the ASMRtists arguably rely on. The number of people that consumes these videos shows that there is a demand for new ways of creating intimacy. The development of digitalization will most likely continue to open up new forms of digital intimacy which makes it an exciting topic to conduct further research on.

Product registration in e-commerce for small and medium companies (SMEs): Usability aspects2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

People these days are able to buy almost anything online. With a continuously increased E-commerce, small and medium sized companies (SMEs) feel obligated to enter the competitive E-commerce market. Moreover, for small companies with little or no experience in e-commerce it could become overwhelming to get a web-shop up and running. One important tasks in managing a web-shop is to register products into the system. This must be easy and efficient. The focus of this thesis is to answer the question "How can user-centered design principles improve productregistration, particularly in the SME context?". At the start of this study, surveys and interviews were conducted, which showed that product registration is very time consuming at the moment. User tests were conducted to measure the efficiency and the general usability of a system maintaining over 100 active web-shops. Based on the results of the first iteration of the user test conducted, design changes were proposed and implemented. A second iteration of the user test showed improved efficiency and substantially less errors. The most important new design elements were related to navigation, workflow and adjustment of input fields to the data sources. Thus it has been shown that the threshold for SME web-shops to go online can be lowered by a systematic application of user-centered design of the user interface.

Social Media's Take on Deepfakes: Ethical Concerns in the Public Discourse2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has led to the emergence of deepfake, digital media that has been manipulated to replace a person's likeness with another. This technology has seen significant improvements, becoming easier to use and producing results increasingly difficult to distinguish from reality. This development has raised ethical discussions surrounding its deceiving nature. Furthermore, deepfakes have had a considerable impact and application on social media, enabling their spread. Despite this, the public discourse on social media, along with its societal and personal values associated with deepfakes, remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining social media discourse and perception surrounding the prominent ethical concerns of deepfakes, and situating these concerns within the broader landscape of AI ethics. Through a qualitative method resembling netnography, 320 posts from Reddit and Youtube were thematically analyzed through a passive observation, along with their respective comment section. The findings reveal various concerns, surrounding misinformation and consent to deeper fears about deepfakes' role in fostering distrust, as well as more abstract apprehensions regarding the technology's abuse and harmful applications. These concerns further revealed how generalized established AI ethical principles might be interpreted in the deepfake context, also showing how and why these principles might be violated by this technology. Particularly it revealed terms how principles such as dignity, transparency, privacy and non-maleficence might be diverged in deepfake applications.

Investigating the requirements for an e-service that provide relevant online information for newly arrived immigrants in Sweden2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is a huge need for information when you arrive as an immigrant in a new country. The purpose of the study is to find out recommendations for an information portal for newly arrived immigrants in Sweden.

First, a survey was conducted to the webmasters of relevant authorities online resources regarding their ways of considering the needs of immigrant users. The answers showed that the webmasters of the official websites showed interest in considering the needs of immigrants in their websites by including pages in different languages, but most of them considered this to be difficult, expensive and problematic.

To know more about a particular user group, a survey, interviews and observations have been done.

A survey to newly arrived immigrants showed that their ICT skills are comparable to the average of Swedish citizens. In spite of differences within the immigrant group, like age, gender and cultural factors, they also shared common characteristics. Most of the immigrants trusted Swedish websites and Swedish authorities websites as reliable information resources more than websites in their mother-tongue.

Test-persons were faced with the task of finding information about the possibility to borrow money for furniture for the first home in Sweden, our observations showed that very few of the test-persons managed to find their way to the correct authority webpage (Studiemedels-nämnden). Most test-persons tried by using many ways to search for the information, but all except two gave up. None of the test-persons managed to find the pages that were translated to their mother-tongue.

The study points out the need for a systematical approach to web information for newly arrived immigrants to help them with their integration process and benefit from Swedish e-government services. A central multilingual portal website should be the heart of this program.

This approach can be introduced in SFI schools given that all SFI schools are supplied with computers.

Green IT & Green Software - Time and Energy Savings Using Existing Tools2009In: Environmental Informatics and Industrial Environmental Protection: Concepts, Methods and Tools (Part 1) / [ed] Volker Wohlgemuth, Bernd Page, Kristina Voigt, Shaker Verlag, 2009, p. 57-66Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Green IT is steadily gaining ground among companies and organizations worldwide but the understanding of its actual significance is often indistinct. The purpose of this paper is to investigate Green Software and to summarize different points of view on Green IT and clarify some actions to be taken towards using computers more wisely. Special attention will be paid to Green Software and exploring what factors could make software being used and developed with the environmental impact in mind. A descriptive research method based on available literature has been used. Finally a test was set up to control if the amount of data sent over the Internet could be lowered during navigation by changing a server setting. The intention was to prove that Green Software can be simple use of tools we have at hand, just adding a small amount of knowledge. The result showed that there are savings to gain with no effect on overall performance. To conclude, a holistic approach towards Green IT and all it’s including parts is necessary, together with appropriate ways of measuring progress towards improvement.

Transcending Memories Beyond Borders: Carrying Memorabilia from Home to Abroad.: Transferring Personal Memorabilia for a Meaningful Cross-Country Experience.2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Collecting memorabilia has been a longstanding practice as it evolved around cultures and societies. Despite existing research about preserving memorabilia, meaningful preservation methods remain unclear due to the individual and idiosyncratic nature of practices [18,22,40,43,47,59]. Migrants who collect memorabilia face challenges in preserving them due to unavoidable circumstances such as lack of transportation, physical measurements and weight of memorabilia. In 2020, 281 million people migrated globally, accounting for 3.6% of the world's population, and as this issue continues to grow, finding practical solu tions is crucial [36,38]. The aim of this study is to explore ways to digitally preserve memorabilia to maintain their material qualities and meaning across diverse geographical contexts (RQ1). The study also focused on understanding what objects migrants regard as worth preserving (RQ2) and how digital memorabilia can be designed to serve as memory tokens (RQ3). The research employed an exploratory case study approach, focusing on first-generation Sri Lankan migrants [11,30]. Qualitative data was collected through interviews and the use of 3D printing and augmented reality was evaluated through prototype testing using a research-through-design approach [29,58]. Results revealed that souvenirs encapsulates sentimental, economic and aesthetic values that provides a symbolic meaning to its’ owner and contributes to constructing their identity. Migrants were willing to try new technologies and augmented reality was recognised as a satisfying experience. To transfer memorabilia meaningfully among different geographical context, a holistic solution for memorabilia preservation was expected by migrants where physical protection of memorabilia is emphasized. Further research in this study involves utilizing photogrammetry scanning and 3D modeling to closely replicate real-life memorabilia and further evaluating mixed-reality user interactions such as augmented reality.

Olika barn leka bäst?: En analys av bibliotekspersonalens tankar om hbtq-arbete på ett barnbibliotek2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the experiences of public library staff who works in an LGBTQ-profiled children’s library. The aim of the study is further to find out whether the library as an institution can challenge heteronormativity or if traditional gender identities are reproduced. I have conducted five qualitative interviews with librarians who all work in the same library, and who all work with children to some extent. The interview material is analyzed with queer theory and norm critical theories of pedagogy. These perspectives wish to critically examine heteronormativity and change what is defined as normal.

The result of the study shows that the way the library works with separate rainbow shelves, where LGBTQ-themed material is gathered, is pointing out LGBTQ as something different. And although it may also shed a light on a group formerly made invisible, it is reproducing traditional gender identities and leaves heteronormativity unquestioned. By contrast, the way the librarians are working with always including LGBTQ-materials in programming as storytimes and book presentations, is challenging the dominant position of heterosexuality. It is also shown that the way the library staff has developed their written and oral communication with the patrons, including using the gender neutral pronomina ”hen” and alternatives to ”mom and dad”, is increasing the possibilities of an inclusive reception in the library. The oral communication is for various reasons not always used though.

In conclusion the interviews show that the librarians are positive to working with LGBTQ-issues although they sometimes tend to forget. The study further concludes that the library’s way of working with LGBTQ-issues is both reproducing traditional gender identities, and challenging heteronormative structures.

This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

The Future of Podcasts: A Case Study based on Usability Heuristics of a Podcast Service User Interface of an iOS Application2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the Usability of the podcast service User Interface (UI) of the iOS app Aftonbladet. The method used originates from a heuristic evaluation technique where semi- structured interviews were conducted with users of the podcast service to explore the usability and to find usability problems. The conducted interviews determined that there existed usability problems with the UI and thus, usability heuristics have been violated in the UI.

Nielsen’s Ten Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design and Nielsen’s Severity Ratings for Usability Problems are applied to the interview answers for evaluating the usability of the podcast service UI.

The heuristics that are interpreted as being of critical importance are:

    • Heuristic 3. User Control and Freedom
    • Heuristic 4. Consistency and Standards
    • Heuristic 5. Error Prevention
    • Heuristic 6. Recognition rather than Recall
    • Heuristic 7. Flexibility and Efficiency of Use
    • Heuristic 8. Aesthetic and Minimalist Design
    • Heuristic 10. Help and Documentation

Three out of the ten heuristics were not of critical importance:

    • Heuristic 1. Visibility of System Status
    • Heuristic 2. Match Between System and Real World
    • Heuristic 9. Help Users Recognize, Recover and Diagnose from Errors

Getting the audience's attention by going viral: A case study on Sverige för UNHCR’s video messages on the refugee crisis2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Detaljhandelns förberedelser inför GDPR: En fallstudie om vilka förändringar företagen behöver utföra samt deras arbete kring GDPR2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Big data analysis of Customers’ information: A case study of Swedish Energy Company’s strategic communication2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Big data analysis and inbound marketing are interlinked and can play a significant role in the identification of target audience and in the production of communication content as per the needs of target audience for strategic communication campaigns. By introducing and bringing the marketing concepts of big data analysis and inbound marketing into the field of strategic communication this quantitative study attempts to fill the gap in the limited body of knowledge of strategic communication research and practice. This study has used marketing campaigns as case studies to introduce a new strategic communication model by introducing the big data analysis and inbound marketing strategy into the three staged model of strategic communication presented by Gulbrandsen, I. T., & Just, S. N. in 2016. Big data driven campaigns are used to explain the procedure of target audience selection, key concepts of big data analysis, future opportunities, practical applications of big data for strategic communication practitioners and researchers by identifying the need for more academic research and practical use of big data analysis and inbound marketing in the strategic communication area. The study shows that big data analysis has potential to contribute in the field of strategic and target oriented communication. Inbound marketing and big data analysis has been used and considered as marketing strategy but this study is an attempt to shift the attention towards its role in strategic communication so there is a need to study big data analysis and inbound marketing with an open mind without confining it with some particular fields.

    Abstract [en]

We  are increasingly turn to social media for our news consumption two related media phenomenon that influence media consumption are the “Echo chamber” and “Filter Bubble”. Echo chamber this the phenomenon that we tend to have conversation only with those that has the same likeminded as we do while Filter bubble is created by Social media and information retrieval technology that tends to priorities showing us things it already know we like.

The aim of this thesis is to suggest design solution for social media that may counter the effect of “Echo chamber” and “Filter Bubble”. The precise method used on this thesis is play centric design method and both intermediate and final evaluations were done through qualitative evaluation.

At the end a design solution of Viewlette game were presented. It can be concluded that the suggested design solution may have the tendency to counter the effect of Filter bubble and Echo chamber on social networking site by enabling people that has conflicting points of view to still listen to each other and understand an argument from different perspective.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose/Aim: The purpose of this thesis is to define and analyse how Swedish record companies work with digital musical content distributors. A more narrow aim is to show how the record companies and with the digital musical content distributors iTunes Music Store and Spotify create incentives for consumer’s to use legal digital music channels through the Internet. To further circle the core of the problem following questions have been asked: How does the record companies provide iTunes Music Store and Spotify with digital content and what is done by the record companies to retain control over the material? How do the record companies view digital musical sales and what incentives are given to consumers to buy music digitally? Finally, What position of power do iTunes Music Store and Spotify have on the digital content arena?

Material/Method: The data collected for this thesis is retrieved through personal interviews with representatives from three of the four major record companies Universal Music, Warner Music and EMI and their Swedish branches.

Main results: The consumer’s access to digital content through iTunes Music Store and Spotify is of the utmost importance and is a prerequisite. Even if the record companies choose to not demand DRM protection on their products it does not stop Apple from keeping their Fairplay protection. In this way Apple is the company controlling the files, even if the Record Companies have made their decision based on research, which has shown that sales go down if the music files are DRM protected. The record companies have chosen not to get involved with the sales of digital content. This results in power being shifted to E-tailers such as iTunes Music Store and Spotify. The incentives the consumers are given to buy music digitally are found in the surplus value, which is supported by iTunes Music Store and Spotify. These surplus values are such services as recommendations of music or artists. Different packaging solutions, such as subscriptions through an Internet provider, do not raise the value of the music. The value is added to the Internet provider’s products and not the music, but they do guarantee a steady income for the record companies.

Into tomorrow1: Constructing scenarios for the record industry in the 21-century2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Titel: Into tomorrow – Constructing scenarios for the record industry in the 21-century.Number of Pages: 54 (55 including enclosures)Author: Erik G AgebergTutor: Else NygrenCourse: Media and Communication Studies DPeriod: Spring semester 2009University: Division of Media and Communication studies, Department ofinformation science, Uppsala University.Purpose/Aim: The aim of this paper is to, through scenario planning methodology, present recommendations in order for record companies to be competitive in the nearfuture. In order to achieve this goal three question where asked. (1) What are the mostcentral problems of the record industry? (2) How can these problems affect the futurein the industry? (3) In what way can record companies’ work to avoid theseproblems? The paper focuses on the Swedish market partly because of the giventimeframe but also because of Sweden’s position in that of file sharing as well astechnological advances. It is also assumed in this paper that the future of music saleswill be concentrated to the Internet.Material/Method: The chosen method for this paper was scenario planning. Anextensive literature study was complemented with interviews of key players involvedin content consumption over the Internet.Main results: A fundamental issue for the future of the music industry is that oflegislation. The outcome of the record industry’s future is almost exclusivelydependent on the way, which the legislation takes. A stricter legislation, whichincludes violations of citizens’ personal integrity, may backfire and result in politicalpirate parties’ becoming members of parliaments. This may in turn result in that theintellectual property laws of the nineteenth century are removed. Suing privatepersons and trackers can result in record companies alienating an entire generation ofmusic consumers. Record companies attempts to retain music as a product may proveto be futile within time, but they can absolutely prolong the period in which it is aproduct. It is nevertheless, not entirely negative for music to become a service. Bybeing a service music can more easily be attached to another service, like an Internetsubscription, or an experience.

Det “transformativa” i transformativa teknologier: En studie om investeringar inom området transformativ teknologi och dess transformativa egenskaper2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The transformative capabilities of technologies have great potential contributing to change that benefits society, the environment and human well-being. The world faces many grand challenges today, such as climate change and extensive digital change. Investors affect which technologies shaping our societies and organizations that are mission-driven, rather than entirely profit-driven, can affect the paradigm shifts that are to come. Despite an increased interest in the field of “transformative technologies”, there is a lack of consensus on basic characteristics and what the term entails. The lack of defining characteristics results in a risk of the term being diluted, which further has negative effects linked to decision-makers’ lack of approaches to evaluate transformative abilities in technologies. Decision-makers can be helped by a more defined concept, and through applicable methods, decision-makers can be helped to achieve their goals. Existing methods for evaluation of so-called “responsible investments” such as ESG and Impact investing are not focused on transformative capabilities of technologies. Furthermore, some limitations make them less applicable in cases where transformative technologies are relevant. The study contributes to an increased understanding of the concept and provides methods for evaluation by analyzing transformative capacities in Industrifonden's portfolio companies in the field of transformative technology. The empirical basis consists of 12 portfolio companies. The study highlights three dimensions of characteristics for transformative technologies, value changes, mimicry and diffusion, and contributes to an understanding of their meaning. Furthermore, the study shows recurring patterns in terms of transformative characteristics. In addition to the contribution linked to an increased understanding in the area, the study provides suggestions on how these technologies can be evaluated and how evaluation methods can be applied to investment strategies.

    Abstract [en]

As a result of a successful human development around the world an extensive urbanization of societies are taking place that are networked in various ways. In these networks, increased travel and digitization are central where individuals and organizations converge in a constant and immediate wireless and mobile technology flow. An example of this is Stockholm and its public transportation company Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). Although most participate in most of the network society, SL is struggling with an audience that seldom travel with them: families with children. We intended to find out how the communication of SL´s digital platforms could get families to travel more with public transportation. The method for this was a survey via e-mail in which families were asked how they experience SL on website, mobile phone and social media. The survey was highlighted with theories and concepts of network society, e-government, convergence and interaction. Results show that families are satisfied with the main content, especially real-time and mobile functions on SL´s digital platforms, but there is a lack of interaction on social media. But whether how SL´s communication on digital platforms can get families to travel more with public transportation, the answer is that it is difficult. The conclusion is that SL must continue improve existing and develop new popular features, and visualize themselves and "make more of and effort" on the website and mobile platform on social media, to hold on to current families travel with public transportation and win the trust of new ones in the long run.

    Abstract [en]

Uppsala University Annual Bibliometric Monitoring produces statistics on publication volume, publishing level, citation impact, collaboration (in terms of co-publishing) and open access. The aggregation level is primarily department, which means that it is primarily the departments of Uppsala University that are the units of analysis in the monitoring. Two main data sources are used: the local publication database of Uppsala University, DiVA, and the in-house version of the Web of Science database available at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University, the Netherlands. The considered publication period is 2013-2021. The results are presented in graphs or in tables, and in the next to last section, the results are briefly summarized. Regarding the domain Humanities and Social Sciences, and the indicator proportion of publication fractions at level 2 (in the Norwegian model), the department Gender Research has an increase of almost 20 percentage units from the publication period 2014-2016 to the period 2019-2020, whereas Art History and Philosophy have an increase of about 14 percentage units for the same periods. The highest values on the citation indicator PP(top 10%), with respect to the domain Medicine and Pharmacy and the last considered publication period, are observed for the four departments Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacy. For the domain Science and Technology, the three biology departments, Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Genetics and Organismal Biology, all have high values on the citation indicators with respect to the whole publication period. For the last considered period, Ecology and Genetics has the highest PP(top 10%) value, followed by Chemistry – BMC.

    Abstract [en]

In this contribution, the effects of enhancing direct citations, with respect to publication-publication relatedness measurement, by indirect citation relations (bibliographic coupling and co-citation) and text relations on clustering accuracy are analyzed. In total, we investigate six approaches. In one of these, direct citations are enhanced by both bibliographic coupling and co-citation, whereas text relations are used to enhance direct citations in another approach. In addition to an approach based on direct citations only, we include in the study, for comparison reasons, each approach that is involved in the enhancement of direct citations. For the evaluation of the approaches, we use a methodology proposed by earlier research. However, the used evaluation criterion is based on MeSH, arguable the most sophisticated item-level classification scheme available. The results show that the co-citation approach has the worst performance, and that the direct citations approach is outperformed by the other four investigated approaches. An approach in which direct citations are enhanced by the BM25 textual relatedness measure has the best performance, followed by the approach that combines direct citations with bibliographic coupling and co-citation. The latter performs slightly better than the bibliographic coupling approach, which in turn has a better performance than the BM25 approach.

Exploring the relation between referencing practices and citation impact: A large-scale study based on Web of Science data2018In: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, ISSN 2330-1635, E-ISSN 2330-1643, Vol. 69, no 5, p. 728-743Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this large-scale contribution, we deal with the relationship between properties of cited references of Web of Science articles and the field normalized citation rate of these articles. Using nearly 1 million articles, and three classification systems with different levels of granularity, we study the effects of number of cited references, share of references covered by Web of Science, mean age of references and mean citation rate of references on field normalized citation rate. To expose the relationship between the predictor variables and the response variable, we use quantile regression. We found that a higher number of references, a higher share of references to publications within Web of Science and references to more recent publications correlate with citation impact. A correlation was observed even when normalization was done with a finely grained classification system. The predictor variables affected citation impact to a larger extent at higher quantile levels. Regarding the relative importance of the predictor variables, citation impact of the cited references was in general the least important variable. Number of cited references carried most of the importance for both low and medium quantile levels, but this importance was lessened at the highest considered level.

A bibliometric analysis of battery research with the BATTERY 2030+ roadmap as point of departure2022Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In this bibliometric study, we analyze the six battery research subfields identified in the BATTERY 2030+ roadmap: Battery Interface Genome, Materials Acceleration Platform, Recyclability, Smart functionalities: Self-healing, Smart functionalities: Sensing, and Manufacturability. In addition, we analyze the entire research field related to BATTERY 2030+ as a whole, using two operationalizations. We (a) evaluate the European standing in the subfields/the BATTERY 2030+ field in comparison to the rest of the world, and (b) identify strongholds of the subfields/the BATTERY 2030+ field across Europe. For each subfield and the field as a whole, we used seed articles, i.e. articles listed in the BATTERY 2030+ roadmap or cited by such articles, in order to generate additional, similar articles located in an algorithmically obtained classification system. The output of the analysis is publication volumes, field normalized citation impact values with comparisons between country/country aggregates and between organizations, co-publishing networks between countries and organizations, and keyword co-occurrence networks. For the results related to (a), the performance of EU & associated (countries) is similar to China and the aggregate Japan-South Korea-Singapore and well below North America regarding citation impact and with respect to the field as a whole. Exceptions are, however, the subfields Battery Interface Genome and Recyclability. For the results related to (b), there is a large variability in the EU & associated organizations regarding volume in the different subfields. For citation impact, examples of high-performing EU & associated organizations are ETH Zurich and Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science.

Uppsala University Annual Bibliometric Monitoring 20202020Report (Other academic)

The considered publication period is 2011-2019. The results are presented in graphs or in tables, and in the next to last section, the results are briefly summarized. Regarding the domain Humanities and Social Sciences, the indicator proportion of publication fractions at level 2 (in the Norwegian model), the departments Economics and Peace and Conflict Studies have the highest values for the last three considered publication years. The highest values on the citation indicators, with respect to the domain Medicine and Pharmacy and the whole publication period, are observed for the three departments Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics and Pathology and Pharmacy. For the domain Science and Technology, the three biology departments, Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Genetics and Organismal Biology, all have high values on the citation indicators with respect to the whole publication period.

Utopi, dystopi och imperativ: Om teknik och bibliotek2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this theses I investigate ideas about technology in relation to libraries held by actors in the librarian field. The purpose with the study has been to investigate how these actors think about their own role and their possibilities to affect and adapt to the general technological development. The aim with this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of which functions the library fills today as well as which functions it can and should fill – today and tomorrow.

I have used a qualitative hermeneutic method and the empirical ground for this thesis consists of the two library papers Biblioteksbladet and Bibliotek i samhälle of which I have chosen to study issues published during 2019-2021.

For the analysis of the material I have constructed a theoretical framework built on previous research regarding  ideas of technology and technological development. The theoretical framework consists of three different ways to conceive and regard technology. The first two of these three viewpoints is if the actors have either a utopian or a dystopian view on the technological future in relation till libraries. The third concept is used to investigate if the actors expresses, or is affected by, a technological imperative. The technological imperative can be described as the idea of technology as something good in itself and/or that technology follows its own inner logic.

The result of the analysis showed that actors gave expression of both utopian and dystopian views of the libraries technological future. It also showed that actors were both affected by and gave expression themselves for a technological imperative and also that they argued against, and was making resistance to, a technological imperative.

AI och hälsovård: en studie om Acceptansen för AI inom hälsovården2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mental health issues have become increasingly common and are now identified as a global problem. Figures for young Swedes aged 16-29 suffering from mental health problems show alarming increases over the past 15 years. Concurrently with the rise in mental health issues, studies highlighting the importance of AI in the healthcare sector are being conducted. These studies cover both advantages and limitations, with a recurring theme being a lack of acceptance from users. The purpose of this study is to examine the acceptance among young adults, both men and women, in Sweden, within the age range of 16-29 years. Acceptance is investigated through a quantitative survey based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The survey included a total of 73 respondents. However, we would like to point out that this number may limit the validity and generalizability of the findings.

For both chatbots and avatars, five hypotheses have been defined, with all related to chatbots being accepted while four out of five related to avatars are accepted. The results of the study's hypotheses show clear relationships, with positive correlations and significant values at the one percent level (p < 0.01). There are clear connections between perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, perceived usefulness and attitude toward use, as well as between attitude toward use and intended use. These results, based on collected data from the survey, reveal an overall low acceptance among young Swedes regarding AI-integrated health advice and indicate a certain level of concern and hesitation regarding the use of AI in mental healthcare

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to gain a greater understanding of how the public library’s mission towards foreign-born users in Sweden has reformulated and developed through time. This is done by a comparative study on official texts from the 1970s and the 2010s. The thesis is based on a discourse analytical perspective and is focused on how the texts are describing foreign-born users as a target group, and what is described as the main objective towards these particular users. The analysis also opens up for a discussion on the role of the public library in the development of a multicultural society. The empirical material consists of three official texts from each decade, that has been commissioned by different institutions with influence in the field.

The results show that the source material from the 1970s is characterized by the use of the word “invandrare” (in English immigrant), and an immigrant discourse where the immigrant is defined based on their perceived deviation from Swedish majority society. The library’s main mission towards these users described as providing books, newspapers and magazines in the immigrant’s native languages.

In the source material from the 2010s there is a wider range of words being used to refer to the group. The most frequently used is the word “nyanländ” (in English roughly translated to newcomer). This reflects the increasing focus on individuals which recently has immigrated and their information need during their first years in the new country. In the texts from the 2010s it is evident that the library sees itself as a tool for integration. One of the main conclusions from the analysis is that while the 1970s texts are focused on the foreign-born users cultural and linguistic distinctiveness, the texts from the 2010s see adaption to Swedish society as a primal objective. Roller och ansvar inom förändringsarbete: En kvalitativ studie om digital transformation i svenska kommuner2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish welfare is facing challenges in further developing business processes and services in order to meet society's demands for accessibility and efficiency. As a result, Swedish municipalities are undergoing a digital transformation journey that is changing both internal working methods and the delivery of services to citizens. Previous studies show that digitalization projects are complex to implement and anchor within the organization. Hence, this study is based on a theoretical framework focusing on the change leader's ability to enable sensemaking. The theoretical framework is used to study and analyze the role of the change leader and the success factors that prevail in Swedish municipalities' digital transformation projects. The study has a qualitative research strategy, and the empirical data has been collected through eight semi-structured interviews with employees from three Swedish municipalities. This study shows that both internal and external factors form the basis for the municipalities' transformation journey. The results also show that both managers and employees are affected and need to be aware of the digital transformation. Important success factors are to create a common foundation and collaboration between business units, employees, and leaders. However, the role of the change leader is not set in stone, instead it is changed and shared between the employees who become involved in the change process. The study results in a conceptual model that can function as an analysis tool that helps municipalities to understand, identify and prioritize change management in relation to the digital transformation.

”Vi ska inte slåss utan samarbeta”: En fallstudie av samverkan inom läsfrämjandearbete för barn och unga2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this master’s thesis is to examine how collaboration is represented in guiding documents and practice concerning reading promotional work towards children and youth within Sandviken’s cultural center’s public library and the house of literature. This is examined through a case study of the public library’s and the house of literature’s activities for children and youth, with a focus on how collaboration affects the organizations work towards these target groups.

The empirical material consists of legal texts from national, regional and municipal levels, documents, and guidelines for the two organizations, as well as qualitative interviews with librarians and activity developers within the library and house of literature’s practices. The empirical material is analyzed with the use of Kajsa Lindberg’s organizational definition of collaboration and focuses on how collaboration is perceived, motivated, what unifying objects that exist between different professions and which promoting and inhibitory aspects that can be identified.

The analysis shows that motives behind collaboration often involve different categories of motives at once and that they synergize with one another. Librarians and developers experience collaboration as more fruitful when sprung from practice rather than from directives stated in documents. However, the result from this thesis indicates that the documents have a valuable function in putting collaboration on the agenda within public libraries and making decisions to establish and invest in such activities more legitimate.

The results further indicate that the organizations within the case have promoting prerequisites that are specific for their local context such as engaged politicians and a strong local cultural tradition, but that the benefits that can be identified in some measures can be achieved elsewhere using the prerequisites at hand.

Organizational changes, trust and information sharing: an empirical study2019In: Aslib Journal of Information Management, ISSN 2050-3806, E-ISSN 2050-3814, Vol. 71, no 5, p. 677-692Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

While there is relatively plenty of evidence for the positive impact of communication on the perceptions of organizational change, how organizational changes affect information sharing is relatively unknown. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if a favorable perception of ongoing organizational changes has a positive impact on information sharing and whether trust mediates this relationship.

    Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire (n=317) was administered to the employees of a large Finnish multinational organization. Partial least square structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses based on earlier research findings.

    Findings

The results show that a positive perception of recent organizational changes improves information sharing both directly and indirectly, mediated by trust. Consequently, when changes are perceived negatively, employees recoil from information sharing which is known to have negative implications for organizations.

    Research limitations/implications

Data were collected in a single organization. The nature of the specific changes in the studied organization and its particularities undoubtedly had an effect on respondents’ perceptions.

    Originality/value

This paper contributes to organizational information management research by elaborating on the relationship between organizational changes and interpersonal information sharing between employees. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first quantitative study confirming the impact of the perception of organizational changes on employee information-sharing behavior.

Consumer perspectives towards monetization and its impact on AAA game designs2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Monetization is now a fundamental aspect of video game creation and currently, all developers are trying to utilize it in the various designs of their games. Contemplating the monetized aspect of video games, this research has seen a gap in the studies pertaining to monetization from the perspective of the consumers, who are also the gamers and the buyers of these monetization designs. This paper approaches monetization from the perspective of consumers to bridge that lacuna. It aims to gain insights into the consumer mind by initiating a conversation between previous theories and present discussions to arrive at a middle ground on monetization in AAA games between consumers and game designers. It achieves this by the use of an online survey and semi-structured interviews with core and casual consumers. Furthermore, this research is supported by a discourse analysis on YouTube by game critics and reviewers. The results of the study showed that monetization is beneficial to independent developers and mobile games, it is also beneficial in AAA games if it is left to the part of the game design that does not affect the quality of the game. For example, cosmetics and DLCs, as long as those DLCs are not gated game lore that consumers are forced to buy. The impact of monetization on AAA games is a fifty-fifty issue on the part of the consumer and developer. The financial impact consumers project to developers justifies the rationale for the continuity of monetization models regardless of the quality of the games design. In the future research is needed to better understand consumer perspectives on monetization, particularly among consumers who have grown up in different gaming eras. Additional studies with larger sample sizes should be conducted in order to make valid generalizations and capture the perspectives of teens. Future studies should also focus on games and game studios that have implemented micro-transactions successfully, considering game design quality, revenue, and customer satisfaction.

Identifying Mobile Phone Usability Issues in Informal Swedish Language Learning:What users think about it?2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis studies the usability issues of the mobile phone in informal Swedish language learning. The concept of usability is defined by expanding the technical usability attributes of Jakob Nielsen with other recent attributes derived from considering the technical aspects of mobile learning (m-learning). Thus, the ultimate structure of the usability factors that are discussed in this study consists of: accessibility, easy-to-learn, technical design, efficiency and satisfaction. With the support of the relevant previous literature and interview, we research this topic by considering the mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), informal language-learning and usability elements, in order to explore and identify the usability of mobile phone. The goal of this study is to contribute to detailed understanding of mobile phone usage, further identify the usability issues of mobile phones by obtaining both critical and commendatory feedbacks and reflections from the users. For final results, through qualitative research approach, we offered several findings regarding the mobile phone usability with specified reasons.

Rethinking Cyber Warfare: Timeless, Normless and Unconstrained2018In: IKSAD Journal, ISSN 2630-6166, Vol. 4, no 9, p. 195-214Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Improvements in cybernetics have made likely far reaching shifts in all areas of life. Thus, the scientific-technological developments after 1950s gave rise to “the information revolution” from which national security has quite been affected as well. The rapid growth in the fields of computing created a new realm of fantasy called cyberspace. As a phenomenon, cyberspace has the potential for enormous avails and advantages as well as unpredictable risks. There are three major dimensions all associated with cyberspace: technologies, policies and disputes. In order to analyze the real damage that a hypothetical cyber-war or individual act of cyber warfare could do to the citizens of any nation coming under attack, it is fundamental to begin with some reflections which will help us reach a full understanding of the phenomenon, and its related practical implications as well as impacts. Since cyberspace comprises many complicating matters, it is a further difficulty of developing new combative techniques, tools and norms in an area that is inherently secretive. Cyber-attackers do not announce who they are and the victims may not want to admit having been vulnerable. By this view, this research will specifically examine timeless, normless and unconstrained cyber warfare by rethinking its history, content, associated emerging policies and focus on the question of national security in light of the cyberspace phenomenon.

Artificial Agendas: Polarization and Partisanship in the Turkish Mainstream Media through Fake News2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis revolves around the subject of fake news, a phenomenon that has been highly discussed with the advent of the internet-based media. It aims to shed light on the problem of fake news and its implications in the Turkish mainstream media by mainly departing from the discourse theory, as well as by using additional theoretical approaches over fake news and media in polarized settings. In that sense, five research questions were developed to understand how fake news items disseminate in the Turkish media ecosystem, and what this could mean for the Turkish mainstream media specifically from the contexts of political partisanship and polarization. In order to answer the research questions, a total number of 687 fake news items have been analyzed in three different data sets. After providing an overall picture of the problem of fake news in the Turkish media ecosystem, the thesis specifically focuses on fake news items that circulate within the Turkish mainstream media. Overall, 77 fake news items are further subjected to an analysis of discourse activity schema in order to find out the narratives that the fake news items are connected to the Turkish political and social context. The research shows that the use of fake news items in the Turkish mainstream media indicates divergent and conflicting epistemologies over certain social and political themes, which are government- opposition divide, secular religious divide, economy, and education. Moreover, the research also indicates that certain social and political themes are under the discursive hegemony of certain groups within the Turkish mainstream media organizations. These themes are found to be anti-immigration, anti-US, anti-Israel, and FETO. Eventually, two main points are discussed in relation to the given theoretical background. First, the problem of fake news in the Turkish mainstream media indicates a damaged understanding of journalism in the country, which requires a reorientation and reexamination. Second, media in polarized settings may increase partisan alignments and divergent epistemologies, which can lead to the use of fake news items in order to empower certain agendas.

Creating personas from online discussion logs: Case study: Bitcoin users2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Personas are useful design tools that are used for improving the quality of the design and they can be created with the help of various user research methods. However, it is hard for designers to reach out the relevant group of users. Also, it is time and effort consuming to set the interviews & observations with the users and pull the precise information from the gathered data.

Moreover, users can recall a limited amount of their memories when they are asked unless they are keeping a diary. This study aims to suggest an alternative user research method by figuring out if the online discussions are capable of supplying the necessary information which will be the basis for the Persona. As a result, a set of procedural steps are designed for analyzing the online discussion content and it is implemented to a case where the community is trying to develop the Bitcoin technology and its usage.

It appeared that discussion logs are such a rich source of information which covers the necessary input for Personas. Finally, Bitcoin users are segmented and five vivid Personas are created.

Opportunities and challenges with the GDPR implementation: A study of how the GDPR has affected business processes in Sweden2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The General Data Protection Regulation is a relatively new law that is applied to all companies within the member states of the European Union. The law is established to protect individual’s personal rights and privacy from being misused. The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate how businesses based in Sweden have complied with their internal and external processes in alignment with the GDPR. The gap that was found was that limited research has been made regarding how businesses have complied in alignment with the law after the implementation. To investigate this problem area, semi-instructed interviews were conducted with five large companies in Sweden. The results that were found was that the General Data Protection Regulation has contributed to different challenges for businesses as well as opportunities. Nevertheless, a major finding from the empirical presentation together with previous research was that the businesses need to standardise their processes to align with the standards of the General Data Protection Regulation.

Coops hållbarhetsarbete: En fallstudie om hur ett ord kan påverka organisationskulturen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the light of corporate scandals, pressure has increased on organizations to communicate

information related to their corporate social responsibility (CSR). In order to keep up with the

increased pressure on social commitment, organizations’ self-descriptions may be future-oriented

rather than reflections of reality. The future-oriented communication may improve the

organizational culture and thereby motivate staff to perform more efficiently. On the other hand,

if the organization does not fulfill their CSR communication it could lead to internal skepticism.

This thesis constitutes a case study of the organization Coop, comprising whether the

relationship between its CSR communication and the internal perception of Coop’s CSR work

in store has affected their organizational culture.

In order to answer How does Coop communicate it sustainability work through its external

communication? and How does the staff perceive Coop's sustainability work? a qualitative

content analysis and interviews with Coop’s staff have been conducted. The theoretical

framework consists of Nils Brunsson’s (2006) theory about Organized hypocrisy, and

    Christensen's (1997) Autocommunication.

A conclusion that can be made from the results of this thesis, is that the image communicated

from Coop (regarding their sustainability work) does not seem to be fully aligned with the

staff’s perception of Coop’s sustainability work. Coop’s definition of their sustainability work

had only been acknowledged by some, whereas half of the staff had individual interpretations

of Coop’s sustainability work. The various definitions of sustainability among the staff led to

various attitudes towards Coop’s sustainability work, which ultimately resulted in a fragmented

    organizational culture.
