    Abstract [en]

    In most descriptions of business development and models for Corporate Governance, contacts between supplier and customer are for the most part focused on the supplier’s responsibility to identify and document customer requirements in order to enable the organization to meet customer requirements (stated and unstated). In the actual contact between customer and supplier it has been observed in several cases that there are aspects of the interaction not described in traditional theoretical quality models. What seems to be missing is a more explicit requirement for customers and for customers' actions. The logic is that a qualified customer performing based on supplier instructions will result in a better performing product. The apparent lack of theoretical models describing this aspect indicates that this is an interesting area for research and development.

    The purpose of this paper is to highlight a seemingly "forgotten" area within quality management, which is the lack of requirements put on customers in quality models.  The first objective is to review existing quality models to explore the extent of requirement on customers included. The second objective is to propose additions to current models that include requirements placed on customers.

    A limited review of the award criteria and the most common models for quality and improvement techniques shows that there is no explicit and documented way to set requirements for customers. Our interpretation is that EFQM is the model closest to our description of “demands on customer” due to their clauses connected to “partnership”.

    The ISO/DIS 26000 is moving the requirements further against the customer for the social responsibility than the quality standards are doing.

    Further research could focus on how requirements on customer will affect the performance of the entire supply chain both from a quality and social point of view.

    Abstract [en]

    Effective management in the globalized world requires an effective, efficient and flexible management system. Effective could be interpreted as addressing all relevant stakeholder concerns in a context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Efficient would mean that it does the job with low resource use. Flexibility requires that changed conditions and new requirements easily can be included. Many organizations are already working with Integrated Management Systems (IMS). Interesting questions are to what extent current integration covers the above mentioned needs and if not what changes are needed. This conceptual paper looks at the advantages and problems of integration. Possibilities for development of fully integrated management systems are studied from the perspective of managing stakeholder needs, with the forthcoming ISO 26000 – “Guidance on social responsibility”, as inspiration. Results show that there are advantages in integration, but that the scope and level of integration often is limited. A conceptual model for integrating all stakeholder needs in value networks is presented.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose. This study was part of a larger work to develop an authentic measure consisting of code sets for self- or proxy-report of child participation. The aim was to identify common everyday life situations of children and youth based on measures of participation.

    Method. The study was descriptive in nature and involved several stages: systematic search of literature to find articles presenting measures for children and youth with disabilities, identifying measures in selected articles, linking items in included measures to the ICF-CY, analysing content in measures presented as performance and participation and identifying aggregations of ICF-CY codes across these measures.

    Results. A large number of measures for children and youth with disabilities were identified but only 12 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A slight distinction in content and age appropriateness appeared. Measures presented as performance covered all the ICF-CY Activities and Participation chapters, whereas measures presented as participation covered five of nine chapters. Three common everyday life situations emerged from the measures: Moving around, Engagement in play and Recreation and leisure.

    Conclusion. Only a small number of life situations for children and youth emerged from items in selected measures, thus, other sources are needed to identify more everyday life situations.

    Abstract [en]

    This master thesis examines the copyright law with the purpose of sorting out the consequences and the effects of the law impacted on libraries. The theories used are mainly discourse analysis and public domain theory. At the centre of the examination is the effects that copyright law bring to libraries and their ability to perform their work. A major part of this thesis is gathered around the analysis of the presumptive key words that give the structures of copyright law the possibility to claim rightfulness. This is an outspoken strategy to illustrate the discourse of copyright law. Through the whole working process the author is trying to keep a critical point of view. The literature that is used consists to the biggest parts of texts written as an examination of the copyright law and the effects of the law. The author also uses legislations and laws regulating libraries work in society. The goal of the examination is to point out and discuss the friction that appears when one system of intellectual property is institutionalized in society. With this comes the mission of opening a discussion concerning the possibilities for libraries to “keep going strong” in a time deeply influenced and regulated by copyright law.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this master’s thesis is to investigate a information center called ”Infoteket om funktionshinder”. The purpose of Infoteket is to collect information about disabilities and make it accessible to people with disabilities, their relatives and public. In this survey I will analyze how Infoteket can help people with disabilities to achieve empowerment. I use empowerment as a theoretical framework as Jay A. Conger and Rabindra N. Kanungo describes it in terms of sense of control and self-efficacy. For people with disabilities, empowerment is about ability to control his own destiny. The key to empowerment is information.My second theoretical framework is Carol C. Kuhlthaus’ principle of uncertainty. I’ve found it possible to apply the phases from uncertainty to understanding to the information search process within the process of diag-nostics.The main method has been qualitative interviews where the informants have been selected according to their professional role. I have also studied Meeting Minutes and conducted a quantitative survey of visitor statis-tics.Infotekets’ role to promote empowerment lies in the ability to examine the quality and reliability of infor-mation about disabilities. A close collaboration with authorities makes it possible to ensure the quality. An im-portant criterion for quality is scientific foundation and accessibility. The literature must be readable for the public rather than professional.To promote empowerment it’s also important to reach the target groups. I have discussed if it makes any difference whether the information is available at the library or the habilitation. The results show little differ-ence, but there are some disabilities that are more difficult to reach through habilitation. That’s why I believe that the library is an important complement to habilitation.This is a two years master’s thesis within Library and Information science.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis aims to explain why some groups experience civil armed conflict over oil whilst others do not. Given the context argued by previous research which asserts that State oil-dependence significantly increases the risk for civil armed conflict onset, I hypothesize that group actors are likely to experience civil armed conflict over oil when they possess strong group organizational capabilities. I argue this because group actors who do not possess the military resources to go to war would rationally not do it considering the relatively low chance of success of resource-less war-waging. While State oil-dependence theoretically provides group actors with reasons and opportunities to fight by generating greed and grievances, greed and grievances alone are not able to provide the fighting capacity needed for a group to initiate civil war over oil. This implies a need for the group actor to be well-organized in order to have the capabilities to go to war over oil. This study employs a structured focused comparison of four empirical cases, and finds that group actors are likely to experience civil armed conflict over oil when they possess high levels of ethnic homogeneity and pre-existing organizational history.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to study under what conditions armed groups practice different repertoires of sexual violence, by studying ideology’s influence on behaviour. This will be explored through a structured focused comparison of three armed groups active in the conflict in Darfur 2003-2006, the Janjaweed, Sudan’s Liberation Army/Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement. The theory suggest that a strong implemented ideology will lead to control over behaviour and values, hence sexual violence will be practice in line with organizational objectives and ideas, either instrumental or not practiced at all. Consequently, a weak ideological framework will lead to variation in socialization processes and an opportunistic repertoire.  The findings correlate as expected by the hypothesis, while data constraints call for caution. The results suggests a broadening of the theoretical framework as well as further studies on the suggested causal mechanism, combatant socialization, to examine how, and under what circumstances, behaviours are spread as a social practice among combatants.

    Previous research has not fully addressed the causal processes embedded in participation of women’s groups in peace processes, and the potential outcomes achieved by their participation. This thesis seeks to contribute to this topic by analyzing the research question under what conditions do peace processes contribute to unequal and dangerous societies for women? And the theorized relationship is that ‘the presence of fragmentation of the women’s movement during peace negotiations tends to result in higher prevalence of inequality and violence against women in post-conflict societies’, because fragmentation will contribute to upholding patriarchal norms that facilitate violence towards women through portraying men as top-dogs and women as under-dogs. Structured Focused Comparison is the method used, and questionnaires are developed for fragmentation and post-conflict inequality and violence against women. Two cases are studied and compared: Guatemala and Chiapas in Mexico. The findings show very little support for the hypothesis, although the results are inconclusive.

    Abstract [en]

    Following the onset of the Syrian Civil War, the issue of foreign fighters has gained substantial attention, not least as thousands of Europeans travelled to align themselves with armed groups in the conflict. Although not a new phenomenon historically speaking, this caused widespread concern, particularly when some of these travelers began to return to their home countries. Consequently, this caused some practitioners to advocate for reintegration measures. This study focuses on the latter by combining DDR and criminology literature to explore the role of community leaders in reintegration processes. Belief in Redeemability among community leaders is identified as a favorable condition for reintegration. By exploring Belief in Redeemability among community leaders in Vivalla and Varberga/Oxhagen, the study attempts to further develop theoretical approaches within the field, as well as contribute with further insight to peacebuilding in non-conflict settings. The data consists of 9 in-depth interviews which were analyzed through a focused, structured comparison of discursive themes. The findings display discursive themes which may indicate that encounters between community leaders and Returnees affect how leaders legitimize attitudes associated with a Belief in Redeemability.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this two years master thesis in Library and information science is to study the foundation Centrum för lättläst and its work regarding information use with focus on information structures and information needs. The aim is also to examine how Centrum för lättläst cooperate with Swedish libraries to promote the work concerning people with reading disabilities. This master thesis applies a domain analytic theory and method inspired by Birger Hjørland. The domain analysis is confined to examine ontology, epistemology, sociology, empirical user studies, document and genre studies and studies of structures and institutions in scientific communication. The main source material consists of information from the homepage of Centrum för lättläst. The result of the domain analysis describes the ontology which implies to produce easy-to-read texts. The epistemology constitutes of regulations from the Swedish government regarding the work with easy-to-read literacy. The sociology represents several organizations and authorities connected to easy-to-read literacy. The domain analysis has also identified Centrum för lättläst’s target groups and their information needs which are varying. The study present numerous of strategies composed by Centrum för lättläst to satisfy the information needs of the target groups. Furthermore; the domain analysis has distinguished the information resources Centrum för lättläst use to distribute and make information accessible which are represented by documents within the domain. The result also shows that Centrum för lättläst’s work with information use includes important operators in the domain which contributes to endorse the information needs of the targets groups. Finally the domain analysis has examined the collaboration between Centrum för lättläst and libraries in Sweden, where the result illustrate procedures made by Centrum för lättläst in order to assist libraries in their work with easy-to-read literacy and the target groups.

    The aim of this two-years master’s thesis is to examine the role of the body and the importance of nonverbal communication in the library workplace and to explore the possibility of becoming more nonverbally skilled. For this purpose a course was developed and presented to nine librarians in a public library in the vicinity of Stockholm in February, 2011. Qualitative interviews with the librarians were conducted after the course.

    Important theories for this work were Annemaree Lloyd’s thoughts on corporeality, Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical sociology and John Dewey’s learning by doing. Theories concerning what communication and nonverbal communication really are were essential, as was literature that shows that nonverbal communication is an important aspect in the profession of the librarian.

    Nonverbal signals of importance in the library setting were identified as being mainly eye contact, smiling, bodily movement towards the library user, tone of voice, proxemics (spatial distances), chronemics (time) and haptics (touch). The study also shows that the design of the library and librarians’ worktools interact with the possibility to communicate nonverbally.

    The course consisted of exercises normally used in the training of actors. This was based on the theory of Erving Goffman. The learning process was an example of situated learning in that it took place in the library. It also gave the participants an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience of nonverbal skills with each other. After the course the participants were given questionnaires with questions about their attitudes and experiences of nonverbal communication and their view on the course. After a week a follow-up questionnaire was distributed, in order to find out if the course had in any way had an impact on their work performance.

    The investigation shows that nonverbal skills play an important role in the work of the librarian. Training in these skills has long been neglected, since they have for the most part been taken for granted. This study shows, however, that this kind of training is important. The librarians who took part in the course testify that the exercises gave them valuable practice. Nonverbal skills can be taught and learned: and “it is time to bring the body back into the information field”.

    BACKGROUND A key resource for cross-national comparative research on family dynamics (Andersson and Philipov 2002) is seriously outdated.

    OBJECTIVE AND METHODS We provide an update of the life-table estimates by Andersson and Philipov (2002) based on data from the Generations and Gender Surveys and other related surveys in 18 countries across Europe and the United States.

    RESULTS Life-table estimates of family formation of women and men, union dynamics, and children’s experience of family disruption and family formation demonstrate the degree of variation in family dynamics across countries.

    CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide the basis for more in-depth research on the causes and consequences of differences in family dynamics across contexts.

    CONTRIBUTION The Appendix of the current manuscript is a new resource for comparative research on family dynamics in the early 21st century.

    Abstract [sv]

    Vid ett antal lärosäten i Sverige har lokala system för att redovisa det egna lärosätets vetenskapliga publicering (publiceringsdatabaser) redan tagits i drift eller håller på att utvecklas. Uppgifterna i dessa system ligger i de flesta fall till grund för den redovisning av vetenskaplig publicering som Utbildningsdepartementet numera efterfrågar. För detta ändamål, och för eventuellt andra jämförande studier, är det viktigt att data anges på ett enhetligt sätt. Detta är även förutsättningen för att ett informationsutbyte vid exempelvis en gemensam exponering av svensk vetenskaplig publicering skall kunna möjliggöras.

    Därför har representanter för en del av dessa lärosäten fått i uppdrag att inom delprojekt 1 (DP 1) inom Samordning av den svenska högskolans elektroniska publicering (SVEP) utarbeta ett förslag till gemensamma riktlinjer för dessa publiceringsdatabaser.

    Dessa riktlinjer syftar till att ange vilka uppgifter som minst ska vara med vid beskrivningen av en publikation samt till att få en enhetlig klassificering vad gäller publikationstyp och ämnesområde.

    Förslag till utökningar av minimiformatet ges också under de olika elementen i beskrivingsformatet. Dessa utökningar motsvarar i princip en fullständig beskrivningsnivå.

    Abstract [en]

    Common beliefs posit that rebel fragmentation and the emergence of splinter groups are often associated with intra-rebel violence. However, empirical evidence suggests that it is not always the case: there are cases of non-lethal competition between parent and splinter groups across time and terrain. This study explores the cause of lethal and non-lethal conflict between parent and splinter group that represent ethno-nationalist identity. By using theories of rational choice and outbidding strategy, I argue that lethal intra-rebel conflict are less likely when there is a balanced distribution of power between parent and splinter groups, subsequent to organizational fragmentation. This is because intra-rebel conflict against formidable opponents is costly. Further, it presents an existential threat in the event of counterinsurgency or retaliation. Thus, it is expected that rebel groups are more likely to employ non-lethal outbidding strategy in order to become the sole representation of their ethnic group. Using the method of structured focused comparison, this hypothesis is tested by comparing Moro insurgencies in Philippines and Karen insurgencies in Burma. The main finding demonstrates partial support to the causality of distribution power to the lethality of outbidding strategies. In addition, the empirical analysis also shows state intervention and social ties as influencing lethal intra-rebel conflict.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis is to examine the historical use of "poison cabinets", or restricted shelves, in Swedish libraries. Drawing upon the theories of Mary Douglas and Michel Foucault, it also seeks to sketch a cultural and ideological context of the practice; with the emphasis on social or mental hygiene, and disciplinary aspects. Through qualitative interviews as well as digitalized recordings of librarians active during the first half of the 20th century, actual examples of poison cabinets are presented. A closer examination is conducted of past collections at Lund University Library, and two large public libraries situated in Växjö and Sigtuna. The essay also investigates views on library censorship, controversial literature, and other related subjects reflected in th elibrary press during the period 1916-1979. In summary, the researched material suggests a historically widespread use of restricted collections, although the objectives of its use differ depending on library function. While the collection at Lund University Library appears to have been the result of state censorship, and is associated with the obligation to preserve materials imposed on legal deposit libraries, public libraries' poison cabinets have had a stronger connection to an educational reading culture. As such, public libraries' main concerns have been less about bad books, more about easy-to-corrupt patrons. The study is a two-year master's thesis in Library and Information Science written at Uppsala University.

    Of the territorial intra-state conflicts around the world, there are some that live in the ‘no war, no peace’ environment. The so-called frozen conflicts have attracted significant scholarly and policy attention to explain their durability over time, and sustainability of the de facto regimes that live within such environment. This study shifts the focus from looking at the frozen state of the conflict to improving the understanding of how they become frozen in the first place. My question: ‘why do some territorial conflicts become frozen while others do not?’ sheds light on consistent-patron action during wartime to explain how, through the establishment of trade, territorial conflicts become frozen. Additional novel contributions are provided by conceptualizing patron-state support and focusing on trade as part of state-building mechanisms. A structured, focused comparison with a most-similar case design compares Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Republika Srpska Krajina conflicts. My findings show partial support to the tested hypotheses that indicate a consistent patron-state’s trade establishment with de facto regime leads to frozen conflict. Empirical limitations within the cases limit the ability to draw stronger conclusions.

    Do behavioral measures of ecological lifestyles reflect actual environmental impact? Three convenience samples of German adults (N = 881) completed such a measure, the General Ecological Behavior (GEB) scale. Their household electricity consumption was self-reported (Study 1), assessed by a smart-meter (Study 2), or reported by the power company (Study 3). The latter two studies controlled for income, which can boost consumption just as it opens possibilities for behaving ecologically. Within and across studies, analyses revealed a negative association between self-reported ecological behavior and electricity consumption (-.18 rs -.22), even with adjustment for income. Furthermore, customers in a green electricity program reported more ecological engagement and consumed one third less electricity than did regular customers. These results indicate the criterion validity of the GEB scale for a highly practically relevant criterion and encourage the use of generic behavior measures in efforts to understand and foster more ecological lifestyles.

    The thesis explores the understudied subject of provincial variations in outcomes after

    Security Sector Reform, by examining how security forces’ behavior affect organized

    violence provincially. By contributing to research on organized violence and peacebuilding

    focusing on SSR with a regional focus, the thesis seeks an answer to why there is organized

    violence in some provincial areas but not others, after the initiation of a SSR program? Based

    on theories of state repression, it is hypothesized that security forces’ abusive behavior leads

    to higher levels of organized violence. Further, based in counterinsurgency literature, I

    theoretically develop that security forces’ participation in post-conflict reconstruction

    decreases levels of organized violence. The study tests these hypotheses by employing

    structured focus comparisons and process tracing of four provinces in Burundi during 2004-

    2014. The study finds partial support for both hypotheses. In some cases abusive behavior

    have escalated organized violence, and in some cases reconciling behavior decrease organized

    violence. The causal path suggests, beyond the level of trust and distrusts in society and

    towards security forces, other factors to correlate and perhaps condition the relationships.
