Jómsvíkinga Saga as a Part of Old Norse Historiography2014Inngår i: Scripta Islandica: Isländska Sällskapets Årsbok, ISSN 0582-3234, E-ISSN 2001-9416, Vol. 65, s. 33-58Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The article argues that Jómsvíkinga saga, despite its mixed modality, should be included in Old Norse historiography. A comparison with kings’ sagas and legendary sagas — in this case Yngvars saga víðfǫrla — shows how these modes were used in Jómsvíkinga saga. The saga is often grouped with Orkneyinga saga and Færeyinga saga, which were also written around the year 1200; all deal in some way with the relationship between kings and aristocrats. The reason for this may be found in contemporary events: The Scandinavian kings were strengthening their position, while the aristocracy was trying to maintain its influence. Therefore, the sagas have also been called political sagas. The oldest extant versions of Jómsvíkinga saga contain the first part of the saga, which deals with the history of the Danish Kings; this shows that the saga was intended to be perceived as history. However, a later version (AM 510 4to) omits this part, which suggests that the historicity of the saga had eroded. The fact that Jómsvíkinga saga was incorporated into manuscripts containing legendary sagas also shows that the saga may have been valued for its entertaining plot and not because of its connections to real events and historical characters.

Baltic biographies at historical crossroads2011Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book brings together life stories from five generations of Balts, living through the diverse and recurring transformations of the twentieth century: occupations, war, independence, totalitarianism, and democratic rule and market economy. The twentieth century history of the Baltic countries has often been deeply tragic. Lying on the coastline of the Baltic Sea, these rather small but strategically well located territories have historically found themselves in the middle of many power struggles between larger states, empires and other power-holders: the Teutonic Knights, Swedish kings, Tsarist Russia, Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union. Today, they are once again forced to stand up to the Russian Federation.

Biographical interviewing is a field focused on individuals, and on how those individuals choose to re-create and present their lived lives, make meaning of it through the narratives they tell. To interpret the biographical narrations of Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians, shaped by complex and controversial historical background, the authors use Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of social and cultural capitals, the principles of Erving Goffman’s framing analysis and Alessandro Portelli’s distinction of private and public spheres, Anton Steen’s investigations of post-Socialist elites and Piotr Sztompka’s theory of cultural trauma, etc. Given analyses of particular biographical narrations are supplemented by brief historical and sociological overviews, which allow the reader to better understand the contexts of lived lives, and the mental atmosphere in which the interviews were conducted.

Fjerne spejle: Jøder og muslimer i østnordisk litteratur2015Inngår i: Årsskrift for Det Unge Akademi, s. 10-13Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [da]

    Abstract [en]

The article examines the portrayal of Jews in medieval texts written in Danish before 1515. It begins by describing the theological basis for and creation of a ‘fantasy Jew’. The perception of Jews was fundamentally shaped by the idea that they had tortured and killed the Christian messiah. Devotional texts, sermons and Passion stories which describe the Jews as Christ killers are therefore discussed in detail, and the image of the deicide Jew in vernacular texts is shown to be malleable and changing. The image of the violent Jew who tortured and killed Jesus was used to arouse empathy among readers and to chastise them for being too like the Jews by behaving sinfully. Other Jewish ‘types’ that occur in the material are also investigated: effeminate, Satanic and usurious Jews as well as comparisons with animals. The preliminary results of an investigation into the type of language that was used to shape the image of Jews show that certain ‘negative’ words were used disproportionately more frequently in descriptions of Jews than of non-Jews. This suggests a powerful association between such words and the perception of Jews — a connection that was supported and further enhanced through religious art and theatre. The article concludes by noting what is missing in the extant material and what this might tell us about medieval Danish attitudes towards Jews.

Idolaters, Warriors, and Lovers: Muslims in Medieval Swedish and Danish Texts2016Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Between the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, there was a noticeable change in relations between Scandinavia and the Islamic world – the sources point to a shift from travel and trade to hostility and war. Muslims did not settle in the North until the eighteenth century, and during the Middle Ages there was little contact between Scandinavians and ‘real’ Muslims. So how did Danes and Swedes imagine and describe this Other? Is there anything unusual or unexpected about the portrayal of Muslims? How does this image compare to that of the other great religious opponent, the Jew? By investigating East Norse devotional texts, travel literature, saints’ lives, romances and accounts of Ottoman warfare, this paper aims to draw out some of the major themes in medieval Scandinavian descriptions of Muslims and Islam.

Lessons in Contempt: Poul Ræff’s Translation and Publication in 1516 of Johannes Pfefferkorn’s The Confession of the Jews2013Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Published in 1516, Poul Ræff's Iudeorum Secreta, a translation of Johannes Pfefferkorn's The Conlession of the Jews, was a landmark in the development of anti-Jewish polemics in Denmark.

For the first time, Danes were presented with descriptions of Jewish ceremonies that aimed to portray these practices as dangerously anti-Christian, superstitious and deviating from 'real' Biblical Judaism. Contemporary Judaism is described as a rabbinical construction that is worthy of nothing but ridicule and mockery.  Lessons in Contempt explores this key text that comprises a valuable source for a range of academic disciplines: the history of antisemitism, the study of Jewish-Christian relations, social history, the history of religious culture, and medieval and early modern Danish language and literature.

This book includes an outline of how Jews were portrayed in medieval Danish vernacular literature; a description of Pfefferkorn's life and works; a discussion of Ræff's translation and publication of Iudeorum Secreta; a presentation of the language and style of the Danish version, as well as an edition of the text together with the Latin original, an English translation and an extensive commentary.

Bridging the Past and Present: An Analysis of the Swedish Institute’s National Narrative of Sweden and World War II From the War Through the 1960s2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 poäng / 45 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the Swedish Institute’s construction of a national narrative of Sweden and the war and how it changed over time by comparing three time periods, 1939-1945, 1946-1959, 1960-1969. The adapting narrative of World War II serves to illustrate changes in the Swedish Institute’s projected Swedish identity, focusing on neutrality as an intrinsic component. Creating a national narrative to compliment Sweden’s image served to strengthen Sweden’s international reputation. Thus the Swedish Institute’s narrative of Sweden and the war adjusts according to the changing contexts. Ultimately the Swedish Institute constructed a narrative that was complimentary to the image of Sweden they intended to promote internationally.

Moderna tider: modernitet i Visbys bouppteckningar och press 1880-19102001Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

It is a difficult task to define the little word “modernity”. One may argue quite a lot about what modernity is as well as when modernity breaks trough. The burgess class was the group who initiated modernity in most cases. Since these people mainly dwelled in the cities it was in the cities were modernity started. The creation of an industry demanded new methods of working. Discipline, rationality and a new conscience of time followed as consequences of the industry. Modernity reached small towns and countryside slowly and the old structures were hard to break down. There are of course different aspects of modernity as the modernity of material life, the modernity of ideas and the modernity of culture. The modernity of material life tends to reach people before that of ideas or culture. In the small city of Visby existed many parts of modernity in the material life between 1880-1910. Telephones reached the city very early just like sewing machines or bicycles. Electricity lighted streets and homes just a few years after the turn of the century. Modern things seem to have reached the shopkeepers first, even before the upper class. The paper “Gotlands Allehanda” held a liberal view towards new ideas or writers and seems to have supported the enlightenment of the commons. The modern drama gained slowly ground among the many comedies on the local stage. But through the papers can we find many articles that indicate that Visby was a bit backward in many ways. Hogs were still housed in the streets and there were problems with clean water as well as public sanitary. So in many ways Visby before 1910 was modern on the surface and the old structures gave way only with difficulty.

    Abstract [en]

The essay is about the farmworkers that worked within a system of payment. This consisted in one part of a small amount of salary as payment in money and the other two was for food and a place to live. This type of payment made it problematic to see how much a worker actually earned. It was especially hard to compare with an industrial worker when the houses where run down and the food had a bad quality. Focus for this essay is what was discussed in the union’s weekly newspaper “Lantarbetaren” about the farmworkers between the years 1938-1942 when the debate was most intense, which it was in the last years, were the system of this type of payment was obsolete.

The essay is focused in three areas, the buildings that the workers lived in and its living condition, the work condition and the workers right to organize.

Historiebruk eller missbruk?: Sverigedemokraterna och folkhemmet2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with the language and image of late Swedish absolutism. The sources used are royal medals and royal speeches and ceremonies at the Diets. The images are analysed as linguistic constructions, made up by a framework of concepts articulated in words, symbols and ceremonies around the kings.

The essential argument is that during the late eighteenth century, European absolute monarchy suffered a severe legitimation crisis that had its origins at a discursive level. The political discourse changed: old conceptions and attitudes were revised, and new ones were established. Faced with these changing prerequisites for legitimacy, the absolute monarchs had increasing difficulty to master the political vocabulary; as traditional political concepts successively lost their potential to legitimise, the new concepts increasingly challenged the existing political order.

The investigation consists of three analytical parts. The first part focuses on the language and image of Gustaf III. The second part focuses on the reception of the royal images and the discursive expressions among the subjects during the entire period (1772–1809). Attention is also paid to the repressive machinery of Gustavian absolutism as an important part of the struggle for discursive authority. The third part focuses on the language and image of Gustaf IV Adolf.

The results show fundamental changes over time in the struggles for legitimacy, referred to as a movement from a primarily communicative strategy during the reign of Gustaf III, to a primarily repressive strategy during the reign of Gustaf IV Adolf. These changes are connected to the escalating discursive conflicts shown in the intermediate part, and are essential for the understanding of the final fall of Swedish absolutism in 1809.

    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on the seventy-three essays that were submitted to the Swedish RoyalPatriotic Society in 1773, in response to a competition for the best essay on the advantagesand disadvantages of a national dress. When presenting their thoughts on the design andrealization of a national dress, the authors came to reflect on deeper issues of social orderand sartorial culture, describing their views on society and its constituent parts, as well as thetrappings of visual appearances. Clothes were an intricate part of the visual culture surroundingearly modern social hierarchies; differentiation between groups and individuals were readilyvisualized through dress. Focusing on the three primary means for visual differentiationidentified in the essays — colour, fabrics and forms — this article explores the governing notionsof hierarchies in regards to sartorial appearance, and the sartorial practices for making thesocial order legible in late eighteenth-century Sweden.

Performing Herself: Everyday Practices and the Making of Gender in Early Modern Sweden2017Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this volume, three researchers engage with the practices of gender and the making of difference between men and women, between the feminine and the masculine, in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Sweden. Economic historian Hedvig Widmalm studies the intricate relationship between gender ideals as they were phrased in conduct books and the performative realities of every-day-life as they appear in the correspondences between husbands and wives. Historian Jessica Karlsson approaches work and the performative practices of time-use in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century gentry households. Who did what? Women or men? Young or old? High or low? Married or unmarried? Finally, textile historian Hanna Bäckström enters into the world of handiwork among mid-nineteenth century Swedish gentry women, and the performative nature of knitting, shaping ideals of social status as well as notions of feminine virtues.

The three masters’ theses upon which the three chapters presented in this volume are based, were all written within the Faculty funded masters’ research node Early Modern Cultural History at Uppsala University.
