Aggressiv musik som copingstrategi (Aggressive music as a coping method)2010In: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift, ISSN 0037-833X, Vol. 87, no 2, p. 78-86Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The article aims to highlight Swedish children’s health in relation to high intensity custody disputes and to relate the results to international research. Empirical data consist of district court acts and parent interviews explored through qualitative content analysis. Regardless of empirical material, the results indicate that children’s reactions are internalizing but also externa-lizing and somatic symptoms. There are also children who react through a developmental delay or regression. In addition, the results show that child-ren with disabilities are over-represented. The results are in line with pre-vious international research indicating that there is a connection between the children’s health, the duration of the conflict, the parents’ health and parental ability. Younger children living with parental custody disputes need attention from a health perspective e.g. by preventive interventions.

    Abstract [en]

Students at the medical programme at Umeå university point out the lack of female lecturers. The aim of this study was to see how many men respectively women our students meet as teachers in different teaching situations and to analyze the result from a student perspective. Students more often meet men than women in cathedral lectures. The male dominance is less obvious in group teaching and supervision. The medical programme should pay effort to have more women as cathedral lecturers.

    Abstract [en]

Early induced abortion is an incomplicated medical operation, and about every fourth pregnancy in Sweden is ended through abortion. At the same time a young, secularized woman can describe the decision to abort as beyond what ”really can be demanded of a human being”. What does women do to handle such an experience? The article presents material from an empirical pilot study within the psychology of religion, with the purpose of exploring experiences and acts that are significant for aborting women. The purpose of the study is not to question the Swedish abortion legislation, but to investigate how individuals deal with existential experiences within a secularized context. Womenfocused respectively fetusfocused conceptions and acts are presented from the material of the pilot study. The article also deals with the study’s results in relation to the Swedish churchly geography, and discusses how different religious regions can affect a woman’s experience of going through abortion.

    Abstract [en]

Just before and a few years after the turn of the millennium the burden the health insurance significantly increased in Sweden. This led to several initiatives to understand the causes and to reverse the trends. Government organizations, such as The Scientific Assessment of Health Technology, The National Board of Health and Welfare and The Social Insurance Board all contributed in different ways by producing knowledge, new guidelines as well as by changing their exercise of authority. Together with political reforms these initiatives have been effective in reducing the number of people on medical expenses insurance. If the changes reflect a better public health is, however, uncertain.

Kritiska rön om ADHD-diagnostisering. Rapport från ESSHC-konferensen i Glasgow 2012.2013In: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift, ISSN 0037-833X, Vol. 90, no 3, p. 336-338Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A report from the latest European Social Science History Conference in Glasgow 2012 presented critical findings about ADHD diagnoses under the title: ”Changing conceptions on normal childhood behaviour: International perspectives on ADHD and learning disability". The report covers research on rapidly rising diagnosis rates of ADHD, including possible reasons, competing perspectives, and key issues related to the increasing diagnosis. The evidence suggests that the precautionary principle is increasingly rare among the occupations that are central for the diagnosis of the condition. Historical and social scientific aspects of the disorder may give a different picture than the dominant and widespread definition, which is understood solely in a medical context with a focus on pharmacology.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Parents with substance abuse problems and their children were interviewed, aiming at in-depth knowledge of how perspectives of children and their parents relate to one another. Family patterns of similarities and differences between parents’ and children’s perspectives vary, but there are also certain tendencies. Children describe more deviant behavior of their parent during intoxication and more serious consequences such as overdoses, suicide attempts, abandonment, violence and threats, etc. Children's agency is also more visible in the children’s interview. Maybe more time has to pass after the abuse has stopped before parents can see the consequences of their addiction for the children. The child’s position provides a different perspective and children do not have the same reason to reduce negative impact of the abuse.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore how relatives and physicians in cases where organ donation had been requested understood this situation and what factors were salient for the decision on donation. Physicians of 24 deceased patients and 20 relatives were interviewed. The material was analysed using qualitative methods. Eleven patients had declared their wishes on donation prior to death; in 14 cases the relatives had to decide. Half of these relatives accepted donation and half refused. The donation request was of secondary importance to the families; they were totally occupied by the death and initially tried to avoid the request by regarding “no” as a non-response. They needed support to relieve their immediate reactions of uneasiness, start rational thought processes and reach well-grounded answers. The basis for requesting donation was good; relatives had, with regard to circumstances, been well prepared for the death by continuous information from the physicians and had confidence in staff, accepted that the question was raised, and understood the death criteria. However, about half the physicians experienced conflicts regarding prerequisites of procuring organs and dealing with relatives. Three different approaches were displayed: pro-donation, neutral and ambivalent. Only physicians with a pro-donation approach received acceptance for donation.

    Abstract [en]

This paper builds on the health care systems comparisons undertaken by Ragnar Berfenstam and his colleagues in the 1960’s. It describes the original health systems model guiding that early work and a developed health systems model that we have constructed based on more recent international comparative health systems work. We provide examples to elucidate the orig-inal model and the developed model. Using a selective literature review we note changes and developments in comparative studies over the past 40 or 50 years. We conclude by suggesting the major advances in the field and continuing major challenges to doing international health systems comparisons.
