    Abstract [en]

In Carl Michael Bellman’s (1740-1795) song, Fredmans Sång 28 (c. 1780), the fictional drinking hero Movitz has left Stockholm for studies at Uppsala University. He soon returns to Stockholm, where a disputation is staged in a tavern, a disputation which soon turns into a bacchanalian chaos.   This article analyses song 28 and how it relates to 18th century academic disputations. It explores how Bellman’s parody technique draws on these austere ceremonies, which would have been well-known among his audience. The parody is emphasized through the use of the melody from the famous student-song “Ecce quam bonum”. Bellman himself studied in Uppsala a short period 1758, and it is made clear that he ought to have been present at disputations, at least at his own student organization “Stockholms Nation”.

Poetisk invention eller politisk intention?: Magnus Rönnows dikt Hercules Genuinus Carolus Duodecimus Magnae Scandinaviae Imperator (1706/7) som causa belli2015In: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap, ISSN 1104-0556, E-ISSN 2001-094X, Vol. 45, no 4, p. 5-16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Poetic Invention or Political Intention: Magnus Rönnow’s poem, Hercules Genuinus Carolus Duodecimus Magnae Scandinaviae Imperator (1706/7?) as causa belli. The article analyzes an early eighteenth-century occasional poem, named as one of the causae belli in Denmark’s declaration of war against Sweden in 1709. Written by the Swedish Neo-Latin poet Magnus Rönnow, Hercules Genuinus Carolus Duodecimus Magnae Scandinaviae Imperator (“The Real Hercules, Charles XII, Emperor of Great Scandinavia”) incited a strong reaction from Danish authorities, who viewed the title’s implication that the Swedish king should be regarded as the Emperor of the whole of Scandinavia as both arrogant and provoca-tive. Sweden reacted with a swift and lengthy counter and considered Denmark’s declaration of war, and in particular its accusations with respect to Rönnow’s poem, as ridiculous and groundless. The author of this counter-document, the State Secretary Samuel Bark, stressed the importance of poetic freedom and offered a thorough description of the panegyric genre. The historical reception of this poem raises several significant issues regarding contemporary conventions of poetry writing, and the relevance of poetry in early modern society. This article explores the Hercules Genuinus’ socio-political and socio-cultural background and studies its genre-related features. Upon closer analysis, the poem is revealed as a typical early modern epigram, through which the poet achieves multiple ends: advancing himself as what was then understood as a true Humanist poet, delivering his political agenda, and conveying a moral lesson. Rönnow compares his ruler to the ancient hero Hercules, thus employing an important programmatic theme and placing himself in an established literary tradition. His mastery of theinventio technique renders the HerculesGenuinus a witty and learned piece of poetry.

    Abstract [en]

From Diagnosis to Intersectionality: Strindberg Research from 1963–2011

This article was written as a sequel to Göran Lindström’s article in Svensk litteraturtidskrift (Swedish Literature Magazine) in 1962, and consists of a qualitative, evaluative survey of research on the Swedish author August Strindberg (1849–1912) during the period 1963–2011. A selection of more or less new sub-fields (such as music, TV, radio, film, prose and poetry) arise within the larger field of research on Strindberg’s life and works during this time. Simultaneously, research on drama, modernity, history and mysticism continues to develop. The field of psychological studies underwent major transformations during this period, as tendencies to diagnose the author shifts to a discussion of the historical production of concepts such as “madness”. This tendency is also visible in the field of biographical research, where the intention to reveal the “truth” about the author gives way to investigations of the “author” as a literary function. Furthermore, the same development could be seen in the field that went through the most rapid and thorough change and expansion, gender studies, where attention shifts from investigating Strindberg’s relationship to women to a discussion of the historical production of norms concerning gender and sexuality. My conclusion was, however, that gender studies as well as the discussion of Strindberg as a national author need to employ a more intersectional approach in the future to further deepen and develop these fields. In 1962, Lindström called for additional pieces to add to the Strindberg-puzzle. In 2011, I ask for further development of the critical meta-perspectives on the great cultural construct known as “Strindberg”.

    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the mystifying reinterpretations of sexual violence that we often encounter in the Nachleben of ancient mythology. In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Hades' abduction of his niece Persephone is described with language reminiscent of sex slavery in the Iliad. The maiden continued to be represented as a victim of male and divine violence in Ancient and Early Modern retellings of the myth, but in Romantic and Decadent portrayals her innocence faded. The poppy, which is associated with Demeter in Ovid's Fasti, now came to dominate representations of her. In Algernon Charles Swinburne’s ”The Garden of Proserpine” (1866) and other creative receptions from this period, she is depicted as a queen of opium and a femme fatale. This process transformed the rape of Persephone. The aggression of Hades and Zeus is blurred as Persephone becomes not abused but an abuser, both victim and perpetrator. The change can be related to actual drug use among women of this period. The neutralization of Hades continued and increased during the twentieth century, as the blame was even shifted to Demeter. In psychoanalysis as well as in contemporary poetry, music and novels, Persephone prefers following Hades to the underworld over staying under the protection of her smothering mother. The article connects this retelling of the ancient myth to another modern myth: a daughter must allegedly break the bonds with her mother in order to become an independent individual. Empirical studies on daughter-mother relationships suggest that this view is mistaken. It is more common that young women feel that a good relationship to their mothers improves their chances of achieving independence.
