David, Salomon och kopparindustrin: Kopparindustrins organisering i Edom under järnåldern och dess anknytning till de bibliska kungarna David och Salomon2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

According to historical sources and pottery chronology, the Iron Age in southern Levant spans between approximately 1200 to 587 BC. This roughly 600 years’ period encompass ancient Israel and its neighbor’s history as it is described in Old and New Testament, i.e. “Biblical archeology”. The aim with this paper is to investigate how the copper industry was organized in biblical Edom, i.e. presently southern Jordan, during Iron age, and if this organization could be related to the biblical kings David and Solomon. The methodological departure will be maximalist, which sees the Bible and archeology complementing each other in getting an image of the history, the society, and the religion of these areas in ancient times. Archeologists of this school argue that some of the biblical narratives are more or less correct, as long as archeological evidence does not dismiss them. For theoretical concepts there will be used a typology of chieftain and early states where the notion of chieftain is used to characterize social complexity in stateless societies while the model of early state capture more complex societies.

Two approaches will be discussed. The first one is represented by Israel Finkelstein and his team who suggest that one should lower the dates of the assemblages of Iron Age from late 1100 century to 1000 century BC in a Low chronology. The second approach is argued by Thomas Levy and his team. He wishes to focus on the role of metallurgy in Edom and states that we have proof that complex societies were active 900- 800 BCE and 300 years before the scholars first assumed, during David and Solomon’s time, High chronology. This will shed a new light on Old Testament´s narrative.

Odödliga monument: Återanvändning av megalitgravar2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Megalithic tombs that originally date back to the early to mid-neolithic are the oldest preserved monument that can be found in Scandinavia. The act of raising big stone structures for the dead shows that the monuments where build to last through time. Prehistoric people from different time periods have reused these monuments on different locations all over Europe. This paper focuses on the monuments in Sweden and it shows that the reuse of megalithic monuments appears in all regions where these monuments can be found. The different reasons to why people wanted to reuse these monuments are also discussed. The paper proposes that the reasons are religious and political. Political the monuments can give inheritance rights which granted land rights among other things.

Odödliga rum: En jämförelse av det forntida gravkammarskickets utveckling i Västsverige2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The earliest graves that are found in Sweden is the megaliths, the huge stone monuments created with boulders and open entrances. The megaliths origin is from the Middle Neolithic’s, but they have been reused for several millenniums. The very act of constructing these monumental stone chambers for the dead shows that these monuments were built to last through time. This master’s thesis deals with four different kind of grave types that spans through four different time periods in Southwestern Sweden. After the Middle Neolithic, monumental graves the hällkistan (stone cists), became the dominant grave type during the Late Neolithic. The cist varies in construction, some are meant to be entered but most are closed. During the Bronze Age a new kind of cists continues to be used and new are constructed although the culture tends to create big heaps, cairns, around the cist. During the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age the construction of the graves changes and the cists are instead present on grave fields.

The paper compares the similarities between the graves, megalithic tombs, stone cists, cairns and grave fields, in their monumentality, construction, accessibility, content, and focuses heavily on the transmission between the grave types through the theoretical concept of Longue durée. I have also chosen to focus on the tradition of reuse, and Pierre Nora´s theoretical concepts about memory sites and memory environments. The slow slight changes to the grave traditions, constructions and rooms shows changes in ideology of the contemporary culture. My main focus is to identify and discuss the transformation of the grave room, from the Middle Neolithic monumental stone construction to the late Iron Age grave fields. Through my understanding of this process, I argue that the mentioned grave types are the same type of monument that slowly changes through a time span of roughly 4000 years. The changes are visible through very slight and slow processes.

Den självklara amningens komplexitet.: En osteoarkeologisk studie om amning och dess problematik.2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor’s essay aims to discuss breastfeeding and complications related to breastfeeding within archaeological contexts. Why complications have arisen when such a natural act is per- formed and how individuals have tried to manage them. By looking at different methods of recording breastfeeding patterns I aim to broaden the interpretations of breastfeeding in differ- ent time periods and locations. Isotope analysis will be an important part as well as paleopatho- logical analysis of human remains. Information from three completed studies from Öland and Västerhus in Sweden and Quarto Cappello del Prete in Rome will be presented and discussed. In conclusion I suggest that breastfeeding is a complex act surrounded by difficulties such as diseases and cultural norms. There is variation within populations regarding breastfeeding and weaning. People have been struggling as well as fighting for the survival of their children.

Ready for Crisis?: Food Production in Uppsala during the Second World War2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Recently, various crises have occurred that have reminded Swedish authorities of the preparations needed to manage such phenomena. The recent crises are the war in Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the man-made climate crisis. The aim of this study is to show how urban agriculture can be used to mitigate negative impacts from future crises. This thesis examines different methods used during the Second World War in Uppsala when its citizens turned to urban agriculture to sustain themselves, by studying the local newspaper, archival material, and photographs. While Sweden was neutral during the war, it still suffered the effects of the conflict, such as rations on food and decreased imports on fertilizers, which brought on the need for creating allotment gardens and land lots. This in turn changed the appearance of the cityscape of Uppsala. This thesis will trace the changes made in the urban environment through a lens of crisis studies. Thus, learning from history, a new solution to climate change and future crises are proposed.

Hoburgen – mer än bara en klint: En kombinerad osteologisk- och rumslig landskapsanalys av Gotlands sydligaste udde och dess invånare2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines Storsudret, Gotland’s southernmost peninsula, through an overview perspective of the landscape and its geographical features, as well as Sundre parish for a local analysis of ancient monuments and the people in the area. The south-westernmost point is Hoburgen, a cliff that has left an imprint in the Gotlandic culture in various ways. Through the study of maps, analysis of osteological remains, and etymological connections to Hoburgen, this thesis demonstrates a nuanced picture of the place and the people within. By studying these aspects, we come closer to understand people’s relationship to the landscape throughout the ages and why they chose to return to it and reuse ancient burial sites.

A Roman always fears: Skin in the game during the Roman Republic2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study attempts the introduction of a new theoretical framework to the discipline of ancient history, in turn applied to the question of Roman expansion during the republic. The theoretical framework is derived from Nassim Taleb’s notion of skin in the game as a way for systems to adapt to risk through exposure over time. The author proceeds to test this framework against four sets of common explanations for Rome’s rise to dominance over the Mediterranean. Within the thesis a short survey of the skin in the game of Roman consuls is also undertaken, compiled using T.S. Broughton’s The Roman magistrates as a reference. At least from the perspective of participation in battle, the Roman elite seems to have consistently demonstrated a high degree of skin in the game. In conclusion the author finds the attempt to apply the theoretical framework fruitful, the thesis ending with a tentative exploration of ways in which the notion of skin in the game could be used as a starting point for further research.

Water Politics in a Water-Scarce Landscape: Examining the Groundwater Debate in California’s Central Valley2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The history of California is in many ways a story about water, and the outsized effect that droughts, floods, and seasonal precipitation rates have had on the political and economic development of the state over the past 170 years.  This thesis uses discourse analysis of historical and ongoing negotiations that have been presented in federal and state reports, narratives, case laws and legislation to explore how the discourse around water politics has been shaped in the state.  From this, an antiessentialist environmental history develops around the relationship between overdrafted groundwater basins in the Central Valley and the agriculture industry located there.  Finally, this thesis explores what the future of a waterscape built during the capitalization of modern society may look like as we move towards a new regime of nature.

Det Gamla Uppsala: Berättelser & Metamorfoser2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Ancient Uppsala is a most versatile place. At various times it has sated all types of scholar, nourished every kind of ideology, and fed all forms of doubt. Portrayals of the site have almost exclusively been made at times when it was necessary to define the relationship between the people and the elite, the elite and the Crown, or the Crown and the Church. These narratives take many forms – ancient myths, missionary tales, stories of princely power play, the struggle for social integration in early modern Sweden, or tales about absolute royal power, the free peasant, the oppressed serf, centralism, or the manipulation of history. Uppsala, almost without exception, was the stage on which vital scenes of this kind were played out.  This type of narrative, of which there is no shortage, is the main focus of this thesis. It aims to analyse how the image of Viking Age and medieval Uppsala was formed and has changed at various times, to follow the threads of discussion, and to place ideas pertaining to the site in their historical and intellectual context. The thesis sheds light on two periods in particular: the Gothism of the seventeenth century, and the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the latter period characterized by nationalism, racial biology, and political extremism.

The dreams (and nightmares) of scholars are contrasted with the Gamla Uppsala of reality. Abundant archive material readily allows us to follow the nature of daily life in Gamla Uppsala parish, and to analyse how its inhabitants protected themselves from the material and spiritual destruction of the site. Today, the most significant archaeological observations are often made in the archive, where ‘ancient’ remains are frequently reappraised as relatively mundane products of the more recent past.

The profaned sanctuary: Swedish archaeology and the Nordische GedankeManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

According to the early written sources, Viking Age Uppsala - located at Gamla Uppsala, five kilometres north of the modern city of Uppsala - was the judicial, economic, political and religious centre of the Svear kingdom. Extensively settled during the second century AD, Gamla Uppsala soon became embedded in pre-Christian mythology as the site from which the kings traced their ultimate ancestry and where Sweden, in the political sense, was founded. Although the written sources and archaeological facts clearly indicates a place where the Swedes had a direct and decisive influence on various matters of state - war and peace, the election and dismissal of the rulers - Gamla Uppsala oddly enough attracted those who wanted to deny Swedes these rights. This became quite obvious during the 1930s, when antidemocratic conservatives and right-wing extremist began using Gamla Uppsala as backdrop for their increasingly aggressive outdoor meetings. Several mid- and high-ranking German NSDAP-officials visited Gamla Uppsala, but unlike the Swedish right-wing extremists, the Germans soon realized the enormous difficulty of integrating Old Uppsala in the fascist idea of antiquity. Everything here would contradict the “Führerprinzip”. And when it came to the supposedly ancient Germanic legal traditions, both rudder and sail on the “unsinkable Nordic ship”, the German National socialists soon ran to the lifeboats – after all, Þorgnýr the Lawspeaker from Gamla Uppsala did not have anything in common with Roland Freisler.

This paper aims to follow the threads of discussion among Swedish and German archaeologists and historians during the 1930’s and 40’s, to place ideas pertaining to the site in their historical and intellectual context and to shed some light on how Swedish archaeologists dealt with the Nazi infiltration of Swedish archaeology 1933-1945.
