Storstadens språkliga dimension: Synpunkter på en stilistisk-retorisk analys av urbana ortnamn i Köpenhamn2016In: Namn och bygd, ISSN 0077-2704, Vol. 104, p. 115-128Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The authors of this review article had been asked to preview Line Sandst’s PhD thesis Urbanestednavne – storbyens sproglige dimension (Urban place-names – the linguistic dimension of thecity) and subsequently to act as examiners at her public defence of it. The present article is a somewhatreworked version of the opinion we submitted in January 2016. The thesis explores placenamesin Copenhagen, in particular in three areas chosen for study: the city centre, the Carlsbergdistrict and Nørrebro. These three areas differ in character and history, making the urban namesused there (for streets, squares, shops and companies) suitable for study from three differentpoints of view. The in-depth analyses undertaken include both more theoretical reasoning aboutnames and name formation, and insightful discussions about the process of name-giving takingplace today.

Namnval som social handling: Val av förnamn och samtal om förnamn bland föräldrar i Göteborg 2007–20092011Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this doctoral thesis is to examine how parents in Sweden at the beginning of the twenty-first century use the process of naming as a resource to contribute to the creation of various identities for both themselves and their child. It is based on a two-component study — a postal survey and qualitative group interviews, both conducted in the city of Göteborg, Sweden — and includes parents with children born during 2007 and 2008. By combining different sources (names, surveys and interviews) and different methods (quantitative and qualitative), this study attempts to elucidate how first names and choices of first names can be given various social meanings. In contrast to previous socio-onomastic studies, this study considers not only whether naming contains any social variation, but also how and why such variation arises. The theoretical framework is a combination of onomastic, sociolinguistic, identity-theoretical and interactional theories. The results demonstrate that parents’ choice of first names for their children is an important social act. Through name choices and discussions of these choices, parents create what is known as social positioning, which in turn contributes to the creation of certain identities both for themselves and their child. A number of resources are identified which are used by parents to create different social positionings. This study also demonstrates how both macro-societal structures and interactional aspects influence this social positioning. Finally, this study argues that the observed social variation is best explained by the parents’ desire to identify with and contribute to the creation of different models for society, in which varying social values and attributes are important.

Same same but different: Spatiality in East vs. West Norse2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The study of spatial thinking and knowledge in medieval Scandinavia and its development as an area of enquiry are hampered by a dearth of information on place names in East Norse compared to West Norse literary texts. “The Norse perception of the world: A mapping and analysis of foreign place names in medieval Swedish and Danish texts” is a project based at Uppsala University that uses toponymy and other location-based items such as inhabitant designations in East Norse texts as the point of departure for visualizing the world-view of the medievals in Eastern Scandinavia. Comparing our project with the Icelandic Saga Map, an interactive mapping resource with a West Norse focus, shows differences in aim, material, and composition of the corpora. For instance, our project collects a wider range of location-based information including place names as attested in the manuscripts, their variant and normalized forms as well as metadata about the manuscript sources. The place names are further categorized according to type of name and locality which makes it possible to search for very specific information. Additionally, the Saga Map’s purpose is to “aid new readings of the sagas” which is mirrored in how the text of the sagas is placed alongside the map, while our focus is on the location-based data, and how these represent medieval world-views. For instance, the perception of Iceland as shown in the Swedish and Danish texts is markedly limited. On the whole Iceland is entirely absent from the world-view shown in East Norse texts, a result of the literature mostly being translated from mainland European sources, whereas Icelanders wrote their own history with the Íslendinga sǫgur and konungasǫgur, spatially covering both Western and Eastern Scandinavia. This paper addresses the discrepancy between the East and West representations in the two corpora and questions whether the picture actually reflects the medievals’ knowledge of the neighbouring areas.

"Det är den vanliga spöksupén, vi kallar.": Analys av en objektslös bisatstyp med kalla i dialekter och skriftspråk2010In: Svenska landsmål och svenskt folkliv, ISSN 0347-1837, Vol. 133, p. 7-48Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article is a study of a grammatical construction consisting of a content word or a semantically heavy phrase (X), followed first by a pronoun (P) and then a finite form of the verb kalla ‘call’ (K). There may also be a som ‘as’ between X and P. The component PK, with or without a subordinator, is interpreted as a comparative clause lacking the obligatory object of the corresponding standard Swedish construction (X (som) de/man kallade det ‘X (as) they/one called it’). The main data studied are occurrences of the construction in old dialect recordings. In addition, a number of instances found in dialect dictionaries and in written Swedish are analysed.

The analysis shows that XPK usually forms a single prosodic unit. This is an important reason for regarding the expression as a distinct grammatical construction. In the dialects focused on here, XPK is a routinised utterance format, a semi-lexicalised phrase.

Pragmatically, the construction involves PK being tagged onto words or expressions that are considered noteworthy, for example because they are hard to understand or dialectal. According to the author, the ‘tag’ serves to underline that there is something remarkable about them.

The construction appears to be typical of colloquial, informal styles. It is considerably more common in spoken than in written usage, and presumably also more frequent in traditional dialects than in varieties closer to standard Swedish.

    Abstract [en]

In the field of interactional dialectology researchers use theories and methods from Conversation Analysis and interactional linguistics to explore different kinds of dialectal data. A dialectal utterance (as well as a standard language utterance) is seen not only as a realization of an abstract linguistic system, but as situated in a specific interactional context in which it fulfills a pragmatic, interactional function. A central research question within the field of interactional dialectology is to investigate why a certain dialect feature is used at a certain moment in a conversation, and which consequence this might have for the following turns-at-talk. This methodological approach has, inter alia, a potential to explain intra-individual speech variation within a dialect interview or another recording of dialect speakers. Another central task within the field is to describe the traditional dialect interview regarded as a communicative activity where the interviewer plays an important role, rather than some kind of neutral, objective documentation of a dialect language system.

The primary aims of this article are to discuss conditions for the analysis of dialectal materials from an interactional perspective and present my own research in this field. My research can be described as a synthesis of Conversation Analysis, interactional linguistics, construction grammar and dialectology.

Svansdubblerad negation i dialektinspelningar från nordöstra Götaland2012In: Folkmålsstudier, ISSN 0356-1771, Vol. 50, p. 33-61Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with a type of syntactic constructions where a right dislocated negation inte ‘not’ follows directly after a syntactic-pragmatic complete clause (or other syntactic unit) which in itself has a negative polarity. On the surface this type of utterance is double negated, but functionally it has (still) a negative polarity. The primary data consists of old dialect recordings (interviews) from northeastern Götaland in Sweden. Theoretically and methodologically, the study belongs to the field of interactional dialectology, which I regard as a subdiscipline of interactional linguistics.

The prosodic analysis shows that an inte in a dislocated syntactic position normally is non-prominent and intonationally integrated in the segment that precedes it. The syntactic analysis shows that inte is almost exclusively attached to either negated main clauses or “elliptical” constructions, but not to subordinate clauses. The pragmatic, interactional analysis shows that inte-utterances often occur not only in a TCU- and turn-final position, but also in a final position in larger communicative projects/discourse units (stories etc.). Among the inte-utterance’s typical functions are to contrast, explain or clarify something previous said.

Transkription av dialektinspelningar: Synpunkter och förslag2008In: Svenska landsmål och svenskt folkliv, ISSN 0347-1837, Vol. 131, p. 7-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to describe surname patterns and changes of surname among the Sami of Sweden. It presents the results of three studies. The first is a survey of the present-day stock of surnames (family names) among the Sami community, based on the 2005 electoral register for the Swedish Sami Parliament. It investigates the proportions of names deriving from different languages, and the commonest names in each group. The same study was carried out for different areas, showing that the northernmost parts of Sweden have a Sami name stock significantly different from that of the majority population. Further south, the stock of names is less marked, but no area is without Sami elements.

The second study, based on archival material, concerns changes of name by Swedish Sami to newly formed surnames, over the period 1920–2004. It examines not only the names adopted, but also the ones replaced; how the name stock has been affected by different patterns of name change; and, as far as possible, who the name changers were. The study shows that, for a long time, names derived from Sami and Finnish were replaced with names formed from Swedish. This may be largely because of the stigma once attached to Sami ethnicity. More recently, Sami-language names seem to have been retained to a greater extent, possibly owing to the improved status of the culture.

The third study looks at name changes in favour of names marked as Sami in character. The data consist in part of archive materials, but above all of interviews with three Sami informants who have themselves adopted Sami-language surnames. This study presents the informants’ thoughts on ethnicity and changes of name.

In addition to the author’s own studies, the thesis includes a review of earlier research on Sami surnames, hereditary and non-hereditary, and a list of individual surnames with literature references regarding their origins and meanings. In the thesis, name changes are studied as a single, overall process, with an emphasis on the role of names in society, in particular as ethnic markers.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to apply a name user perspective to the street names of Stockholm, with a focus on knowledge and views about names among the city’s inhabitants. On the basis of interview surveys, a picture is presented of the knowledge and views of Stockholmers regarding their city’s street names and the semantic or thematic name categories to which many of them belong; that is, the study seeks to identify general features of the ways in which the people of the city relate to their street names. Surveys were carried out in seven districts: Hedvig Eleonora parish, Hjorthagen, Fredhäll, Norra Ängby, Årsta, Fruängen and Akalla. A separate survey studied the range and associative properties of street names among Stockholmers not living in the vicinity of the streets in question.

General findings emerging from the surveys are that people are very familiar with the names in their local area; that knowledge about these names contributes to their well-being and sense of identity and belonging; that name categories are appreciated and considered to have an orientating function; that names which are seen as elegant or distinguished are regarded as enhancing the image and perceptions of the environment in which they occur; that long names and those made up of several words may be regarded as unwieldy in practical use; and that people need and create names for more limited park and recreational areas, while formally adopted names for larger green spaces are not used or are felt to be unclear in their reference.

GIS for language study2020In: Routledge International Handbook of Research Methods in Digital Humanities / [ed] Kristen Schuster, Stuart Dunn, London: Routledge, 2020, p. 218-236Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

GIS for language study is a relatively new phenomenon within digitally oriented linguistics that took shape during the so-called “spatial turn” within the humanities, beginning in the 1990s. Geographic information systems (GIS) is a framework used for spatial analysis across a large number of disciplines comprising a set of digital tools to manage, analyse, and visualise spatial data. Areas of application within linguistics range from dialectology and onomastics, fields where spatial perspectives have played a crucial role since their establishment, to general linguistics and philology, where interest in spatial aspects of language data analysis is growing. We will begin with the basic issues of geographical modeling of linguistic data (i.e. the possible relationships between linguistic data and spatial locations). The chapter will then offer an overview of the methodology for using GIS for language study, exploring GIS software, interactive GIS used in large-scale infrastructure projects, geocoding, data visualisation, georeferencing, and GIS-based computational analyses. We will pay special attention to geocoding and to the statistics of GIS-based spatial analysis. Discussion of methods is linked to the choice of research questions and materials, two other crucial components for conducting sound research.

    Abstract [en]

Results from an Internet-based survey on names in 2014, aimed atSwedish teenagers in secondary education are discussed. A total of 314youngsters, more boys than girls, did respond. Focus is on the teenagers’attitudes to first names, and on factors that make names attractive orunattractive. The main purpose is to gain more knowledge on youngsters’thoughts about choice and use of first names. The answers are analysedprimarily from gender aspects but also from socio-geographic aspects. Amodel of social positioning, as introduced by Aldrin (2011), is applied. Many Swedish teenagers prefer the same names as today’s parents, butthere are some indications that the teenagers are looking elsewhere. Espe-cially the girls prefer international names. Regarded as unattractive arenames popular 50 to 70 years ago, hyphenated first names and some na-mes of recent popularity. The names considered most attractive are Aliceand Erik, while Bert, Britta and Margareta are the most unattractive.More female names are mentioned as attractive, while there are moremale names given among the unattractive. There are no clear differencesbetween the attitudes from teenagers in big cities and those in smalltowns in this survey.
