    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the lived multilingualism of a group of young Russian-German adults who as children migrated together with their families from post-Soviet states to the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1990s. Today these adults live in a ‘Plattenbau’ housing estate in a small town in one of the new federal states of Germany. The large pre-fabricated concrete-slab system-built housing estates that were built during the GDR-era are today generally considered as deprived areas due a combination of decreasing population and high unemployment.

This thesis shows how young Russian-Germans create a multilingual community of practice and use various aspects of language and non-linguistic resources for identity construction. The data analysed in this thesis comes from ethnographic studies conducted during three phases of fieldwork between Spring 2011 and Spring 2012. The data was collected at a youth centre where the group of young Russian-German adults regularly met.

Combining intensive participant observation, field notes, photos, and narrative interviews the thesis is a mixed-method investigation. Underpinning the analysis of the research data are theoretical models of the relationship between language, identity, and space. Methodologically this study combines linguistic ethnography, narrative analysis, and membership categorization analysis.

The thesis argues that an ethnographical-narrative approach is a powerful tool that is able to highlight the role of language(s) and non-linguistic resources for identity construction in social spaces, illustrates how young Russian-Germans construct a web of multilingual identities by using social categories to position themselves and others, and shows how the lived multilingualism of  young Russian-German adults influences all aspects of their social lives. For example, the thesis shows the maintenance of Russian as a heritage language within Russian-German families, yet and an avoidance of visible signs of the Russian-German heritage in public spaces.

Female Writing in Manuscript and Print: Two German Examples from the Cultural and Political Context of Late Seventeenth-Century Sweden - Maria Aurora von Konigsmarck (1662-1728) and Eva Margaretha Frolich (?-1692)2014In: Studia Neophilologica, ISSN 0039-3274, E-ISSN 1651-2308, Vol. 86, no S1, p. 9-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aurora von Konigsmarck and Eva Margaretha Frolich, two noblewomen of German descent in late seventeenth-century Sweden, were both influenced by currents in contemporary theology and piety. Aurora von Konigsmarck, her sister, and two of their female cousins formed a circle around the Swedish queen Ulrica Eleonora (the elder). Together they wrote strongly emotional religious poetry in German, which is preserved in an exquisite volume in the Uppsala University Library.Eva Margaretha Frolich expected the Swedish king Charles XI to play a central role in the imminent apocalyptic drama and become the ruler of the world. After she had been exiled from Sweden, she propagated for these views in a number of tracts published in Amsterdam. The present article explores some important paratextual features in Nordischer weyrauch', the manuscript collection of religious poetry written in Aurora von Konigsmarck's hand, and in the works by Eva Margaretha Frolich. The discussion shows the importance of paratextual analysis for the interpretation of texts from the literary and intellectual culture of early modern Europe.

Walter Kempowskis Tadellöser & Wolff im Lichte narratologischer Theorien2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Walter Kempowski (1929-2007) is one of the most important authors in post-war German literature. In 1971, he published his first novel, Tadellöser & Wolff. This historical novel takes its point of departure in the everyday life of the bourgeois Kempowski family in Rostock shortly before and during World War II until the surrender of the city to the Red Army. The novel was initially very well received by literary critics and was also a commercial success. After the adaptation of the novel for film in 1975, Kempowski became even more of a public figure and won popular acclaim. In the film, however, important aspects of the novel’s literary mediation were lost, and as a result, the attitude among critics towards Kempowski changed considerably. In some groups he was viewed with suspicion and seen as the uncritical representative of the bourgeoisie. It was not until the beginning of the 1990s that he received extensive praise and recognition, much due to the publication of his multi-volume historical documentary work, Echolot.

The present study explores Kempowski’s mode of writing in Tadellöser & Wolff from a narratological perspective. The main theoretical points of departure for the analysis are Franz K. Stanzel, one of the leading scholars of classical narratology, and Monika Fludernik, his successor in postmodern narratology. The mediation in the novel is very intricate and carries its theme in a complex and significant way. Though the novel depicts the milieu and atmosphere of the time in a detailed and realistic manner and, through the narrator, the voices, thoughts and opinions of the period resonate in a rich polyphony, yet the predominant narrative perspective is exploited in such a marked way as to create distance to what is portrayed. The fictional first-person narrator proves to be not altogether reliable.

Emotionen.
    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [de]

    Semantically driven change in German(ic) gender morphology2011In: Folia linguistica, ISSN 0165-4004, E-ISSN 1614-7308, Vol. 45, no 2, p. 317-353Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There are many examples of gender loss in the Germanic languages, but none of the rise or return of a particular gender. However, there has been substantial change in gender morphology, involving an increase in morphological complexity. The gender system of German appears to be extremely robust when it comes to the number of genders. In this article, I will introduce a principle for the semantic restructuring of gender systems. Focusing on target gender morphology, I argue that constructive changes have as their point of departure semantic features that lie at the core of the gender system. I stress that such changes affect sub-systems, resulting in layers of gender markers that can evolve at different paces. To exemplify how layers of sub-systems can serve to uphold an overall tripartite gender system, I use the repeated restructuring of semantic distinctions in Germanic adjective inflection.

Sprachwandel im Vergleich: Präsentation eines Forschungsprojekts2010In: Sprache-Literatur-Kultur: Text im Kontext - Beiträge zur 8. Abstract [de]

Entscheidende Veränderungen haben also in dokumentierten Sprachstadien stattgefunden.

    Abstract [en]

With an estimated 100 million copies of his works sold, Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) is still one of the most popular German authors worldwide. Taking Hesse’s position in the aesthetic debates from 1900-1927 as a starting point, this study examines the influence of art criticism, artistic crisis, and intermediality in Hesse’s novels Roßhalde (1914), Klingsor’s last summer (1919) and The Steppenwolf (1927). A major chapter deals with Hesse as an art critic from 1910 to 1930, providing a framework for the further analysis of his novels. Important for Hesse’s aesthetic development is the art historian Wilhelm Worringer, who criticizes the Western art canon and underlines the importance of the artistic will. From Worringer, Hesse learns to interpret “exotic”, non-mimetic works of art.

Of major philosophical importance for the artistic crisis depicted in Hesses’s works is the idea of the principle of individuation (principium individuationis) which Hesse derives from Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche. The polarity between burgher and artist in Hesse’s works is a result of the principium indviduationis: In contrast with the self-sufficient bourgeois, the artist suffers from the torments of individuation.

The publication of The Steppenwolf (1927) with its complex narrative structure is a milestone in Hesse’s aesthetic development as a writer. The novel can indeed be read as one of the most prototypical ones of the 1920s, dealing with topics such as the Americanization of European culture, the growing media competition through cinema, gramophone, and radio, as well as a critique of the cultural decline of Europe. The German philosopher Oswald Spengler’s The Decline of the West (1918-22) is of importance for the genesis of this novel.

Hesse’s skeptical approach towards the technical reproduction of works of art is established through a number of essays as well as in the media reflections in The Steppenwolf. Despite Hesse’s criticism of the new media in the novel, however, the Magic Theater with its cinematic short stories, jump cuts, and zooming techniques is clearly influenced by the silent film of the 1920s. My main thesis is that Hesse – despite the harsh criticism of radio, film and gramophone – uses the techniques of the new media in his novel to criticize the impact of the new media on the contemporary culture of Weimar Germany.

Masken des Erzählens: Studien zur Theorie narrativer Unzuverlässigkeit und ihrer Praxis im Frühwerk Thomas Manns2011Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

Thomas Mann (1875-1955) is a key figure in literary modernism. The status of Mann as a German intellectual and cultural icon of the 20th century was firmly established only after the appearance of the novella Death in Venice (Der Tod in Venedig) in 1912. Mann’s early fiction from 1893 up to then was marked by attempts to experiment with what was perceived as the “traditional” storytelling of his bestselling novel Buddenbrooks (1901). Whereas Mann’s later work, after 1912, which mainly consists of novels, to a large extent draws on “diegesis”, that is the act of narration as well as the voice of the narrator, the early work between 1893 and 1912, which is dominated by novellas and short stories, is much more a play with perspectivism and metafiction. It is an experiment with “mimesis”, world modeling, in the sense of simulation, namely the dissolving of the real and the unreal, the authentic and the inauthentic.

This dissertation is a study of Mann’s early novellas and short stories. Taking the theory of “unreliable narration” as a starting point, the study focuses on what Mann, referring to Little Herr Friedemann (Der kleine Herr Friedemann, 1897), called his narrative “masks”. The conceptual framework of mimesis as simulation allows for a critical examination and modification of the conventional understanding of fictional unreliability. A major theoretical argument of the study is that the theory of unreliability needs to consider a type of mimesis, found in Thomas Mann among others, which is autonomous in relation to diegesis, the realm of the narrator. The concept of “simulated focalization” is introduced to capture textual strategies of ambivalence and masking working together on different levels in the narrative. A “pseudo-authorial” relationship between author, narrator and author-protagonist in stories of central importance such as Tonio Kröger and Tristan is also explored within the framework of masking.

Narrativ opålitlighet eller diskordans i Döden i Venedig?2009In: Codex and Code: Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media / [ed] Kerstin Bergman, Per Bäckström, Christian Claesson m.fl., Linköping: Linköping University Electronic Press , 2009, p. 335-349Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Teoribildningen kring ”opålitligt berättande” (”unreliable narration”) kretsar i regel kring jag-berättare. Thomas Manns novell Döden i Venedig (Der Tod in Venedig, 1912) bildar utgångspunkten för min diskussion.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish furniture company IKEA is famous worldwide for its successful advertising and communication strategies. In the years 1997–2007, the company attained a very prominent status in Germany through audiovisual advertisements in the mass media of television and the Internet, including YouTube. A striking example of this phenomenon is the campaign launched by IKEA on St. Knut’s Day, the date that traditionally ends the Christmas holidays in Sweden. In its advertising, IKEA invented a Swedish tradition of throwing out the Christmas tree through the window in order to create more space for IKEA furniture at home.

The present study examines the process of establishing IKEA as a Swedish brand in Germany through audiovisual advertising. This is done within an interdisciplinary framework of primarily cultural semiotics, communication theory and advertising research. The theoretical concepts of Ego and Alter cultures are employed in order to grasp the interaction between the Swedish company and the German consumer culture. IKEA constructs a model of itself and enters into a dialogue with the German market.

The analysis of 48 audiovisual advertisements, published by IKEA during the period 1997–2007 for a German target audience, shows that the company very consciously draws on various notions of ‘Swedishness’ and Nordic stereotypes. In the last few years, however, the advertising has also included typical German topics that concern domestic, everyday life themes, including equality issues such as parental leave after the birth of a child, women’s careers, and wealthy men being interested in home styling. Over the years, the messages have moved from being indirect and humorous/self-ironic to becoming more serious and direct. The in-depth analyses of six selected audiovisual advertisements explore in detail how IKEA’s presentation of itself as a Swedish company on the German furniture market functions.
