    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the lived multilingualism of a group of young Russian-German adults who as children migrated together with their families from post-Soviet states to the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1990s. Today these adults live in a ‘Plattenbau’ housing estate in a small town in one of the new federal states of Germany. The large pre-fabricated concrete-slab system-built housing estates that were built during the GDR-era are today generally considered as deprived areas due a combination of decreasing population and high unemployment.

This thesis shows how young Russian-Germans create a multilingual community of practice and use various aspects of language and non-linguistic resources for identity construction. The data analysed in this thesis comes from ethnographic studies conducted during three phases of fieldwork between Spring 2011 and Spring 2012. The data was collected at a youth centre where the group of young Russian-German adults regularly met.

Combining intensive participant observation, field notes, photos, and narrative interviews the thesis is a mixed-method investigation. Underpinning the analysis of the research data are theoretical models of the relationship between language, identity, and space. Methodologically this study combines linguistic ethnography, narrative analysis, and membership categorization analysis.

The thesis argues that an ethnographical-narrative approach is a powerful tool that is able to highlight the role of language(s) and non-linguistic resources for identity construction in social spaces, illustrates how young Russian-Germans construct a web of multilingual identities by using social categories to position themselves and others, and shows how the lived multilingualism of  young Russian-German adults influences all aspects of their social lives. For example, the thesis shows the maintenance of Russian as a heritage language within Russian-German families, yet and an avoidance of visible signs of the Russian-German heritage in public spaces.

Andreas Gryphius’ Sonette: Eine Interpunktionsgeschichte2018In: Studia Neophilologica, ISSN 0039-3274, E-ISSN 1651-2308, Vol. 90, no Supplement 1, p. 88-113Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Female Writing in Manuscript and Print: Two German Examples from the Cultural and Political Context of Late Seventeenth-Century Sweden - Maria Aurora von Konigsmarck (1662-1728) and Eva Margaretha Frolich (?-1692)2014In: Studia Neophilologica, ISSN 0039-3274, E-ISSN 1651-2308, Vol. 86, no S1, p. 9-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aurora von Konigsmarck and Eva Margaretha Frolich, two noblewomen of German descent in late seventeenth-century Sweden, were both influenced by currents in contemporary theology and piety. Aurora von Konigsmarck, her sister, and two of their female cousins formed a circle around the Swedish queen Ulrica Eleonora (the elder). Together they wrote strongly emotional religious poetry in German, which is preserved in an exquisite volume in the Uppsala University Library.Eva Margaretha Frolich expected the Swedish king Charles XI to play a central role in the imminent apocalyptic drama and become the ruler of the world. After she had been exiled from Sweden, she propagated for these views in a number of tracts published in Amsterdam. The present article explores some important paratextual features in Nordischer weyrauch', the manuscript collection of religious poetry written in Aurora von Konigsmarck's hand, and in the works by Eva Margaretha Frolich. The discussion shows the importance of paratextual analysis for the interpretation of texts from the literary and intellectual culture of early modern Europe.

    Abstract [en]

The doctrine of the seven source-spirits is a central element in Jacob Bohme's thought. His first book, Morgen Rote im auffgang (1612), contains a detailed discussion of the origin, development, and the function(s) of the source-spirits as the foundation of all reality. In this article, the author uses concepts from Aristotle's Politics to explore how Bohme utilizes ideas of political organization to describe how reality developed in stages from original harmony to the discord of this world.

Maria Aurora von Königsmarck, Amalia Wilhelmina von Königsmarck, Ebba Maria De la Gardie und Johanna Eleonora De la Gardie. Nordischer Weÿraúch. Ein exklusiver Geschenkband mit geistlicher Lyrik. Edition, Kommentar und Kontextualisierung von Bo Andersson2022Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Nordi∫cher Weÿraúch oder Zú∫ammen Ge∫úchte andachten vom Schwedi∫chen Fraúen Zimmer (Nordic incense or collected devotions from the room(s) of the queen at the Swedish court) is one of the most beautiful books in the Uppsala University Library. The manuscript, written in the hand of Aurora von Königsmarck around 1690, contains twenty-two religious poems in German. They were composed by herself, her sister Amalia Wilhelmina, and their cousins Ebba Maria and Johanna Eleonora De la Gardie. There is also one poem signed with the initials A.M.G., but her identity has never been disclosed. The young countesses von Königsmarck and De la Gardie belonged to the highest ranks of the Swedish nobility. There is very clear evidence that the book was a personal and exclusive gift to the Swedish queen Ulrika Eleonora the Elder, married to King Charles XI.

The goal of the present edition is twofold: Volume 1 contains the poems in facsimile and with a diplomatic transcription. Volume 2 brings a commentary and extensive contextual analyses of the poems and the exquisitely bound manuscript. These contextualizations comprise courtly, political, religious, literary, linguistic, socio- and gender-historical perspectives.

"När jag får min lön, tänker min fru köpa en ny hatt.": Granskning av övningsmaterialen i Franska A och Tyska A ur ett genusperspektiv2005Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Der Präteritum Konjunktiv im Deutschen – gestern und heute2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In German, the preterite subjunctive can be expressed either synthetically (es käme) or analytically (es würde kommen). It is often claimed that the synthetic forms are falling out of usage, and that the analytic würde-construction is replacing them. However, there are a number of verbs whose preterite subjunctive forms are still used with some regularity (kommen, geben, wissen etc.), especially in writing. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether the usage of some of these verbs in the würde-construction has increased during the second half of the 20th century – and, if so, whether this increase has been accompanied by a decrease in usage of the corresponding synthetic forms. Since the preterite subjunctive, in its synthetic form, is primarily a feature of the written language, the investigation has been concentrated to written texts.

A corpus called the DWDS-Kernkorpus has been used as the material of the investigation; the corpus consists of four different types of written texts: fiction, functional literature, academic texts, and newspapers. The analytic and the synthetic preterite subjunctive forms of eight verbs (kommen, geben, wissen, stehen, finden, liegen, tun, and sehen) have been searched in the corpus. The frequency of these forms in each decade has been compared, which reveals the diachronic development of their usage. The results of the investigation indicate that the synthetic forms of the eight verbs have been used regularly throughout the time period, and that they – in most cases – are more frequent than their analytic counterparts. An increase of the analytic würde-construction could not be observed. This suggests that, to a certain degree, the synthetic preterite subjunctive remains a viable feature of the written German language.

Walter Kempowskis Tadellöser & Wolff im Lichte narratologischer Theorien2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Walter Kempowski (1929-2007) is one of the most important authors in post-war German literature. In 1971, he published his first novel, Tadellöser & Wolff. This historical novel takes its point of departure in the everyday life of the bourgeois Kempowski family in Rostock shortly before and during World War II until the surrender of the city to the Red Army. The novel was initially very well received by literary critics and was also a commercial success. After the adaptation of the novel for film in 1975, Kempowski became even more of a public figure and won popular acclaim. In the film, however, important aspects of the novel’s literary mediation were lost, and as a result, the attitude among critics towards Kempowski changed considerably. In some groups he was viewed with suspicion and seen as the uncritical representative of the bourgeoisie. It was not until the beginning of the 1990s that he received extensive praise and recognition, much due to the publication of his multi-volume historical documentary work, Echolot.

The present study explores Kempowski’s mode of writing in Tadellöser & Wolff from a narratological perspective. The main theoretical points of departure for the analysis are Franz K. Stanzel, one of the leading scholars of classical narratology, and Monika Fludernik, his successor in postmodern narratology. The mediation in the novel is very intricate and carries its theme in a complex and significant way. Though the novel depicts the milieu and atmosphere of the time in a detailed and realistic manner and, through the narrator, the voices, thoughts and opinions of the period resonate in a rich polyphony, yet the predominant narrative perspective is exploited in such a marked way as to create distance to what is portrayed. The fictional first-person narrator proves to be not altogether reliable.

Att lära för livet: prov som lärandestrategi2020In: Språkdidaktik i praktiken: Metoder, exempel och reflektioner från högskolenivå / [ed] Ulrika Tornberg, Miriam Thegel och Hanna Henryson, Uppsala: Uppsala universitet, 2020, p. 50-61Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Die metaphorische Mauer: Eine Untersuchung zu Metaphern in Walter Ulbrichts Rede zum Mauerbau2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Berlin Wall divided the city for almost 28 years. In June 1961, just two months before the building thereof, Walter Ulbricht said that no one had any intention to build a wall. In August the same year, the wall was built. Ulbricht, one of the most prominent politicians in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), held a speech 5 days after the building of the wall, as an attempt to defend the actions of his government. This thesis focuses on that speech.

In this thesis, Walter Ulbricht’s use of language in his speech is analysed using the theory of conceptual metaphors by Lakoff & Johnson. The aim is to investigate how Ulbricht used language to try to defend the actions that made him be called a hypocrite by many. This is done through exploring how certain words can be understood as metaphors and how this could indicate how a person perceives the world. The words Bruder (eng. brother) and Frieden (eng. peace) are focused on, as these were important and central political words at the time. A central part of this thesis is therefore a discussion of how these words were used in the GDR to be able to later compare this to Ulbricht’s own use.

The conclusion shows that Bruder is used to highlight the German identity, rather than a “West German” or an “East German” one. Furthermore, Frieden is used to call attention to the perceived differences in politics and everyday life. In addition to this, these two words were found to be used intertwiningly, which could be seen through how Ulbricht emphasised that the brothers were the ones fighting for peace. This leads to yet another metaphor that Ulbricht uses in his speech, namely a wall.

    Abstract [en]

The topic of this paper is to critically analyze how Adolf Hitler, the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, later the dictator of National Socialist Germany, uses ‘Othering’ in the chapter “Volk und Rasse” (People and Race) in Mein Kampf (My Struggle) (1924/1925). The analysis demonstrates how Hitler’s language functions in his political discourse, in order to structure the national socialist group-identity in opposition to the ‘Jewish enemy’. Two different methods, which complement each other, are used: a method, based on corpus linguistics (computer-based and quantitative), and an actant model (qualitative through close-reading). The computer-based analysis shows, that the We and the Others are constructed by contrasts – in accordance with the theories of Michel Foucault and Zygmunt Bauman, so that the out-group may be expelled and the bond within the in-group strengthened. The collocations and concordances are immediate contrasts, e.g., the Jew is portrayed as a destroying Devil figure, while the Aryan appears as a constructive, outstanding Pioneer. The second, qualitative analysis demonstrates that the ideology in the chapter “Volk und Rasse” can be depicted as a “narrative through actants”. There is a struggle in the discourse between two sets of actants, associated with Aryans and Jews, which function as polar opposites to each other.

Traumreisen in Märchenländer?: Studien zur Reiseliteratur aus der DDR Richtung 'Westen'2020Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

Up till now, Karl-Markus Gauß has published five volumes of what has often been described as “journals”: Mit mir, ohne mich (2002), Von nah, von fern (2003), Zu früh, zu spät (2007), Ruhm am Nachmittag (2012) and Der Alltag der Welt (2015). The emphasis of this paper lies on the first two of these volumes which are labelled respectively as “Ein Journal” and “Ein Jahresbuch”. A special focus lies on thematic continuities, such as the historical and present peripheries of Europe and its populations and questions linked to the construction of identity. Gauß (self-)reflects critically on the historical roots of contemporary phenomena, which are often taken from medial incidents. The study shows aspects of the texts’ construction character. The crossing of boundaries on the thematic level is reflected in the transcending of literary genres: Gauß’ texts merge different genres into new shapes; his narration can be understood as a kind of resistance to cotemporary superficiality.

Wissenschaftsorientierung in der Lehre der Landeskunde an schwedischen Universitäten: Research-based teaching of Landeskunde at Swedish universities2018In: Informationen Deutsch als Fremdsprache, ISSN 0724-9616, E-ISSN 2511-0853, Vol. 45, no 6, p. [708]-728Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, university studies and hence also German Studies require research-based teaching on all levels. This even includes regular language acquisition courses and courses on Landeskunde, i.e. on culture, history and society. This paper describes the specific context of German Studies in Sweden and demonstrates how seminars on Landeskunde can be developed in an even more research-oriented way. By analysing existing curricula and specific teaching practices as well as by utilising results of a recently completed PhD project this paper delivers new insights into teaching German at Swedish universities and illustrate the learning potential of a cultural-studies-based concept of Landeskunde for research-oriented teaching.

    Abstract [de]

Dabei werden u.a.
