Försäljning av statliga bolag. En jämförande studie av inställning till statligt ägande under två perioder.2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Goal-oriented balancing: happy-happy negotiations beyond win-win situations2017In: Journal of business & industrial marketing, ISSN 0885-8624, E-ISSN 2052-1189, Vol. 32, no 4, p. 525-534Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - This paper aims to suggest a dynamic model incorporating the important dimensions that exist in negotiation processes. Design/methodology/approach - To produce a general and conceptual theory of negotiation, the grounded theory methodology is deployed. Findings - The core process in this model is dubbed "goal-oriented balancing" and describes how he negotiator is continuously balancing opposing, and seemingly contrasting, forces in a situation specific and dynamic manner to reach agreements. Based on these findings, this study also suggests a concept to describe negotiations that is focused on collaboration and that is not an oxymoron as is the concept of "win-win". Practical implications - This conceptual model can be used by managers and practitioners to navigate in a negotiation process. Originality/value - This is the first grounded theory study in negotiation research and attempt to describe negotiation processes as dynamic events in which different dimensions are managed simultaneously.

Two decades of business negotiation research: an overview and suggestions for future studies2017In: Journal of business & industrial marketing, ISSN 0885-8624, E-ISSN 2052-1189, Vol. 32, no 4, p. 487-504Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - This paper aims to present a review of articles on business negotiation published between 1995 and 2015.

Design/methodology/approach - This literature review is based on 490 articles on business negotiation.

Findings - When analyzing the conceptual underpinnings of this field, two paradigms emerge as dominant. The most prominent paradigm is a cognitive, psychological approach, typically relying on experiments and statistical testing of findings. The second dominating paradigm is a behavioral one, largely concerned with mathematical modeling and game-theoretical models.

Practical implications - Besides offering a description of the characteristics adhered to the business negotiation field, this paper will also suggest recommendations for further research and specify areas in which the research field needs further conceptual and empirical development.

Originality/value - This literature review serves to be the first representation of the characteristics adhered to the budding research field of business negotiation.

    Abstract [en]

The thesis studies the Swedish government policy of freight transports during a period ofstructural change since the 1920s. The focus is on the 1963 Transport Act, which introduced amore market-oriented approach. The views of the trade unions during this process areanalysed in more detail. Frequent financial problems of the railways were the main driverbehind different policy decisions in the Swedish Parliament, such as the nationalisation in1939, tightened quantity control of road freight transports, as well as the liberalisation in 1963and its abrupt cancellation 5 years later. No policy change was implemented without thesupport of Statens Järnvägar, the state-owned railway. Unions were sceptical to theliberalisation programme and preferred varying degrees of regulation and planning, althoughstated in general terms. They also agreed on the need for quantity control for most of theperiod, but for different reasons. After supporting Transport workers resistance toliberalisation of quantity control in the late 1940s, LO, the peak organisation, became morepositive in the 1960s, which created a split between the unions. As the problems for therailways deepened later, LO joined the Railway workers in support for rigorous transportplanning, which was fiercely resisted by the Transport Workers, which further increased therift.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to analyse the effects of New Public Management (NPM) reforms on three specific professional groups. From this investigation it is clear that the assumptions inherent in the NPM reforms have resulted in a clear breach of what we theoretically refer to as the professional contract between the state and the professions. We show in this analysis that our studied professional groups have lost central aspects of their professional autonomy. We problematize the perception that an ever-increasing demand for steering and control of professionals within the public sector should be perceived as something exclusively good. In addition to the costs of monitoring, the centrally important paradox of accountability should be taken into consideration, i.e. responsible interpretation and application of external accountability demands rest on the cultivation of the virtues that support good administrative judgement, the type of judgement that is threatened by the control-schemes presented in this article.

    Abstract [en]

In the first half of the 20th century, the researchers in the medical sciences in Sweden were dependent on funding from private foundations. Earlier research has shown that the foundation Stiftelsen Therese och Johan Anderssons Minne was a financier of great importance especially for the 1920s until the 1950s. This paper is written with the purpose of examining how the financing has changed over time, by analyzing the foundations yearly accounts from 1931 until 1963. I will show that physiologists and chemists took a dominant position in the fight for funds. In conclusion, it seems that the fact that the colleague of teachers at Karolinska had the power to decide who to fund were an important factor for the foundations activity. The characteristics of the medical research exercised by the researchers applying for funds were not the sole factor which affected the outcome.

Ideal i annonser: Kvinnlighet i två veckotidningar mellan 1950-19702019Student paper second term, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

En merkantilistisk början: Stockholms textila import 1720–17382008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to, from an institutional approach, study how the Stockholm importers within the textile sector adapted their foreign trade to the change in economic policy 1720 through 1738. The focus is to investigate to what extent the introduction of new laws, regulations etc. can be an explanation for what happened to Stockholm’s foreign trade, mainly imports, particularly textile imports during the period. It is mainly the economic policies that had been enacted during the Hornian government and their effects that have been studied. This is a period that has seldom been studied in other research.

This thesis begins when the Russian raids were over. This was a year when the foreign trade still was relatively free and was untouched by the 17th century’s regulations. After 1721 the policies that would be introduced to increase Sweden's level of self-sufficiency and strengthen ties with the North Sea area had several components. Besides the economic policy, the main sources for the thesis are the city toll records.

The trade policies in the shape of tolls and fees, import and consumption bans etc. and the commercial policies together became different kinds of political tools used for several purposes. The conclusion of this thesis is that the economic policies made the Stockholm importers adapt their trade to the change. The import bans and sumptuary laws had an effect. The economic policies gave rise to an increase in the import of textile raw materials. The rise in toll costs and import fees contributed to displacing the foreign trade towards other areas. The change in the economic policies was successful in the sense that it gave rise to new conditions for domestic production within the textile sector and forced Stockholm's importers to adapt their foreign trade.

    Abstract [sv]

European Banks and the Rise of International Finance after Bretton Woods (1973–1982)2015Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The 1970s is a crucial decade for understanding the modern financial landscape but it is still relatively unexplored in financial history. It was marked by the end of the Bretton Woods regime, the gradual liberalisation of finance, the return of banking crises and two massive energy crises. As archives are now providing new archival evidence, this thesis seeks to analyse a neglected aspect of the 1970s which touches on all of the above-mentioned phenomena: the progressive privatisation of international financial flows to Less Developed Countries (LDCs), especially in Latin America and South-East Asia, and its impact on the European banking sector.

After the collapse of the Bretton Woods’ system in 1973 and until the debt crisis of 1982, Western commercial banks assumed an increasing role in transferring huge amounts of dollars accumulated by oil-exporting countries to LDCs through the so-called ‘recycling’ mechanism of the Euromarket. The trend marked a clear break with the past since, until the late 1960s, development finance had mostly been provided by public institutions. This gave commercial banks a new central role in international financial matters.

In the short term, the privatisation of credit proved to be a profitable bet and it allowed a renaissance of the banking sector after the regime of Bretton Woods. Besides, these international flows of money provided the basis for the financial globalisation to come. In the longer term, many LDCs became subject to the imperatives of private institutions and prisoners of a ‘debt trap’ throughout the 1980s.

We still know little about the attitude of international organisations towards the progressive privatisation of finance and the recycling mechanism and the impact of the oil crisis on the European banking. This thesis will analyse these topics by relying on new archival evidence from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Bank of England, the Banque de France and the archives of several major European commercial banks in France and United Kingdom, notably Société Générale, Crédit Agricole, Barclays Bank, Midland Bank and Lloyds Bank.

    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the two British civic campaigns, Chile Solidarity Campaign and End Loans to Southern Africa, to investigate the role of financial sanctions on authoritarian regimes to suggest the limits of human rights movements in the late twentieth century. While they not only publicised the financial ties between authoritarian regimes and British banks but also garnered popular support, the campaigns had relatively little success owing to the rise of the liberal creed from the mid-1970s. First, the growth of commercial Euroloans, free from national regulations, was detrimental to putting political pressure on financial corporations; in the Euro-capital market, there was no institutional channel to convey the call for human rights. Second, the shift from a Labour government to a Conservative rendered it impossible to introduce governmental measures. Instead of the political pressure, the creditworthiness of the authoritarian regimes assessed by international banks leveraged the financial future of Chile and South Africa.

News Media Ownership and Social Change: Shifting Representations of Oligarchs in the Ukrainian and Russian Press2018In: Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the impact of media ownership on representations of elites during a period of political change. We conduct a qualitative media analysis of 175 articles in leading Russian and Ukrainian news outlets around the 2013-14 Maidan protests that lead to a revolution and military conflict in Ukraine. We find that portrayals of wealthy elites change over time, but vary by media ownership in discrete but parallel ways across oligarch-owned, state-controlled, and independent news. The paper details news patterns alongside protest dynamics, and discusses how ownership remains a driving factor shaping media content during episodes of rapid political change.

United we stand, divided we fall: historical trajectory of strategic renewal activities at the Scandinavian Airlines System, 1946–20122017In: Business History, ISSN 0007-6791, E-ISSN 1743-7938, Vol. 59, no 4, p. 572-606Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Although the second half of the twentieth century saw the rise and fall of ‘multi-flag companies’ (MFCs) in the civil aviation industry, our understanding of how some managed to buck the trend and achieve longevity remains limited. This article advances business history and strategic management research by examining the strategic renewal activities of Scandinavian Airlines (formerly Scandinavian Airlines System [SAS]) during the period 1946–2012. The study sheds light on the key roles of private and state owners, rivals as well as banks, in critical financial phases are discussed in terms of longevity in the company. The longevity of the business stems from the leaders’ ability to develop as anticipated and respond to change in their competitive arena in close interaction with the owners. Thus, incumbent firms that strategically renew themselves prior to or during market reform, such as deregulation, enhance their chances of developing the size of their networks and revenue streams. Our main contribution to business history and strategic management literatures is the development of context-specific stages, which shed light on the evolution of strategic renewal activities and shifts from older processes and routines towards customer service and efficiency.
