    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines the abortion debate in Brazil within the context of Catholic and Evangelical belief systems. Using a systematic literature review and thematic content analysis, the primary objective is to illuminate the intersection of religion and the often taboo topic of abortion. Given the widespread poverty in Brazil, abortion becomes a profoundly critical issue that directly impacts the health and safety of women as it affects their ability to access medical care in safe and regulated settings, thereby reducing the risks associated with dangerous and illegal procedures.

    The findings underscore the substantial role played by Catholic and Evangelical belief systems in opposing the legalization of abortion, driven by their deeply held values. This influence is deeply rooted in historical opportunities seized during Brazil's democratization process. Moreover, Catholic, and Evangelical movements have demonstrated remarkable mobilization efforts, engaging in grassroots activities, and fostering mobilization within private spheres. The polarization of the abortion debate has intensified the visibility of these religious groups and mobilized their supporters in various ways.

    In conclusion, this study reveals that Catholic and Evangelical belief systems have emerged as influential political actors, significantly shaping public opinion and resistance to abortion legalization, even in cases where it is legally sanctioned. Given that religion's influence shows no signs of diminishing but rather continues to grow, further research in this context is crucial to understanding its profound impact on society.

    In the Middle East and North Africa region, many family laws are based on Sharia principles, where different interpretations of Sharia result in varying implications for human rights. This study explores the impact of divorce regulations in the personal status laws of Iraq and Tunisia on women’s rights. While Tunisia stands out for its extensive legal rights for women, surpassing its regional counterparts, Iraq falls behind in advancing women’s rights - particularly in family law. Despite experiencing similar political changes, women in Iraq and Tunisia face different situations and opportunities in terms of accessing divorce. Using a comparative case study methodology, this study examines the expression of divorce laws in Iraq and Tunisia, as well as their intersection with Sharia. The study incorporates a content analysis of relevant laws, along with a review of secondary data on the countries’ history to examine the role of women in shaping these laws. Drawing on feminist theories by Amina Wadud and Kecia Ali, the study highlights the role of patriarchy and male-dominated interpretations of Islam in restricting women’s empowerment. The findings reveal that women’s rights are shaped by social and cultural structures, rather than solely by Islamic principles. Both countries incorporate Sharia in their laws, although Tunisia interprets it more favourably for women, Iraq adopts a more conservative and restrictive interpretation. Tunisia’s successful alignment of Sharia with women’s rights demonstrates the adaptability of Islamic law and the importance of contextual interpretations of Sharia. Internal and external factors, including diverse populations, different Islamic schools of law, and grassroot movements, contribute to different approaches to democratic transition and varying situations for women in Iraq and Tunisia in terms of human rights.

    Abstract [en]

    This text examines the sovereignty concept in Sayyid Qutb´s final book Milelstones, with a focus on the political and non-political aspects of the concept. The analysis also examines potentially radical and extreme aspects in the concept. The findings show that Qutb´s sovereignty concept is a practical theology focused on what God´s sovereignty means for Muslims in belief and practice. God´s sovereignty is an encompassing concept to Qutb, which means that His exclusive right to sovereignty should permeate through the souls of Muslims and guide their actions in all spheres of life, including in politics. In a concrete form, this means that God´s law and principles should be implemented. Qutb´s sovereignty concept is not extreme, but radical because it challenges established secular orders and the hegemonic assumption in modern discourses that human beings have a right to sovereignty.

    Abstract [en]

         This thesis aims to explore whether the Syrian government fulfils its obligations towards the CEDAW agreement. To investigate this arena, the thesis chooses new laws that were issued in Syria. The thesis examines the amendments introduced by the Syrian Arab Republic to the marriage and divorce provisions in the Personal Status Law in Law No. 4 of 2019. The data was analysed using the standard dogmatic legal method. The findings indicate that the Syrian government had entered reservations to Articles (02) and (16) of the CEDAW Convention. The two articles are considered essential in CEDAW. Article 28 of CEDAW forbids any reservations against the object and purpose of the convention. therefore, the Syrian's reservations are impermissible legally. Analysis of legal materials showed that the Syrian government did not honour its pledges to CEDAW. On the contrary, the new amendments strengthen the masculine superiority and support social hierarchy. The thesis recommends amending the Syrian Personal Status Law to comply with the provisions of the CEDAW Treaty fully.

    As September 2021 marks 20 years of the US-led War against Terror and the invasion of Afghanistan, the Taliban currently is taking a seat in Kabul, only days after American troops left the country. The understanding of the failure of the Afghan Peace Talks between 2018-2021 has been looked at from different aspects, but it is important to note there is no independent line of religion between the Taliban and the Afghans, but rather a strong interplay between conflicting moral positions where the Taliban pray on the weak to religiously validate their position and the Afghan government firmly positions itself opposite of the Taliban but does not always do much better when it comes to the inclusion of women and minorities.The hopes of change for a peaceful future in the Afghan society with the arrival of US military troops in 2001 have stayed unfulfilled: the US ignored e.g., the structure of tribal networks of the country, their historical development, and struggled to take responsibility for nation-building efforts, and above all, demonstrated the inability to accept Islam as anything but a terrorism belief which led to a dramatic comeback of the revitalized Taliban. This thesis aims to understand how religion has been a factor in nation-building efforts in Afghanistan as well as the direct outcomes of inclusion of women and minorities, who are currently daily in the international news and high on the agenda of the international diplomatic community.

    The limited evidence base on the effectiveness and impact of Child Friendly Spaces (CFSs) – one of the most widely used interventions to address needs of children – prompted several humanitarian organisations together with the Columbia University to conduct an inter-agency series of impact evaluations between 2012 and 2014. Thus, using the case of UNICEF and World Vison, this study aims to explore if and how the findings of the series of impact evaluations contributed to the learning of the respective organisations. To address this question, a thematic analysis was conducted in two steps: first, for the CFS impact evaluation reports to identify a set of themes about the impact of CFSs; and second, for the pre- and post-evaluation guiding documents of UNICEF and World Vision with adjusted themes from the first step to understand how the findings from the evaluation reports were reflected in the new guiding documents. The comparison of UNICEF’s and World Vision’s use of impact evaluations showed that both of them engaged in organisational learning by creating/acquiring knowledge through impact evaluations that was then retained through evaluation reports and the incorporation of the evaluation findings into the new guidelines and finally transferred through the dissemination of said documents. However, the utilisation of findings by the two organisations appeared to result in two different types of learning: World Vision, while capturing lessons and improving their guidelines using evaluation findings still carried on with their current framework of CFS interventions, which points to single-loop learning. UNICEF, on the other hand, moved toward a more integrated community-based mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) interventions with CFSs only being one part of them, demonstrating the organisation’s questioning of underlying assumptions, system-wide thinking and more strategic approach pointing to double-loop learning. This research thus takes the discrepancy between the prevalent belief that evidence is crucial for humanitarian programming and the limited use of such evidence as a starting point by shedding light on how this evidence can and does contribute to organisational learning.

    In this essay, Ingeborg Wikander's book Fem år i Kina has been examined through a thematic analysis method. The result showed three distinct categories, each with their own subcategories, which are: Wikander and the women, Wikander’s piety and Wikander, homesickness and national romanticism. When the theoretical framework was applicated onto the study it showed that Wikander generalised and grouped all Chinese women into one category. A category Chandra Talpade Mohanty refers to as “third world woman”, which was a way for Western women to distance themselves from women of another ethnicity, which also can be referred as “othering” a group, creating an Us and Them. Drawing on Malin Gregersen’s reasoning about paternalism and social motherhood, one can see how Wikander took on a nurturing role in the relationships she engaged in while in China. Shirley S. Garrett’s liberation ideology in relation to missionary work is also visible in the letters and works from Wikander.

    Abstract [en]

    The main purpose of this study is to make a critical examination of Rudolf Bultmann´s (1884–1976) and Wolfhart Pannenberg´s (b. 1928) interpretations of the resurrection of Jesus. Bultmann is best known for seeking to demythologize the miracles of the New Testament. Pannenberg has gained much attention for arguing that the resurrection of Jesus is an event in chronological history.

    In this thesis I first present Bultmann´s and Pannenberg´s interpretations of the resurrection of Jesus. In order to help the reader understand the context in which these interpretations were made, I give a brief sketch of the German theological setting. Second, I compare the theologies of Bultmann and Pannenberg from the concept of background theory, principles of interpretation, exegetical reasoning, the meaning of the resurrection and what it means to accept the resurrection. Third, I categorize different ways that the resurrection could be interpreted today. Fourth, I critically discuss the way that Bultmann and Pannenberg argue and give some proposals for how their theologies can be developed. Developing the theology of Bultmann I give more attention to chronological history than he does. I also make alterations in the way he understands God´s action. Concerning Pannenberg I discuss the importance of rational arguments in his theology. I argue that the resurrection should be interpreted from the perspective of a faith or an interpretation which seeks understanding.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this Master thesis is to give an account of and review the ideology yhat King presented through his preaching, speeches and other sources. The metod I have chosen for this purpose is to systematize King’s ideology and the to critically analyze it. When doing so I have discoverd that King’s non-violent ideology is coherent, but that his argumentation is somewhat defective, especially when examing its plausibility.                      King’s non-violence ideology was based on a theocentric wordview and a natural law pholosophy. He tought that all men are created in the image of God and that all humans have the possibility to do good. King’s non-violence ideology is based on active resistance where people use love and civil disobedience as tools to enforce subversive changes. King was against all types of violent actions and stated that violence never leads to sustainable change, that violence is immoral and unworthy of any human. King also said that non-violence is the only way to combat societal problems in a long-term perspective.

    Abstract [en]

    Year 2015, Sweden received approximately 163 000 refugees, whom almost half of were children. To combat these, according to the Swedish state overwhelming numbers, a temporary law was put in place in 2016. The law came to be extended and valid until 19th July 2021. This was a hard hit primarily towards children. 

    The purpose of this thesis is to critically analyze how children rights and human rights are interpreted when judicial judgments are passed within the context of asylum. To conduct this study, the work of inter alia, Louise Danes thesis has been studied, which gives us insight of the jurisprudence and the application of human rights in Swedish public right. Sweden outright implemented the “Convention on the Rights of the Child” into its own laws as is, without skewing or reformulating it in 2020, which is analyzed in this study. This study observes the first judgment made after the installment of this law, within an asylum case, regarding a 14 year old girl. What is also analyzed are documents of policy, from the Swedish Migration Agency regarding their understanding of human rights and application of it. The material in this study is analyzed from an ethical and critical standpoint, based on the thoughts of Ronald Dworkin and Elena Namli. 

    The study shows that the interpretation of human rights and children rights within public right is ambiguous. What has been shed light on based on this study, is that the authority uses certain laws to nullify the principle regarding the best interest of the child. In “hard cases” the state tend to apply laws to justify the compromise of a child’s human rights.

     Administrative courts’ view on children’s human rights are actualized when the courts rule that children should be taken into the care of society. It is a legal decision and, moreover, it is an intricate moral issue where fundamental values such as protection, autonomy and equality are at stake. Domestic violence and child abuse are grounds for custody in more than half of the judgments when Swedish Care of Young Persons (Special Provisions) Act (SFS 1990:52) (commonly referred to as LVU) are applied in the courts (Lundström et al. 2020, s. 290). Child abuse is a criminal act and a violation of human rights. Since January 1, 2020, the Convention on the Rights of the Child has been incorporated into Swedish legislation, which means that it must be applied in the administrative courts’ decisions on custody judgment, alongside the Act (SFS 1990:52). Children’s human rights must therefore be considered when such cases are decided.

     

    This thesis aims to examine and compare the administrative courts’ view on children's rights, for children subjected to child abuse, before and after the Convention on the Rights of the Child was incorporated into Swedish legislation, when the courts apply Act (SFS 1990:52) to decide whether to separate a child from their families. The study is done through a discourse analysis of 20 judgments; 10 judgments before (between 2012-2014) and 10 judgments after (between 2020-2022) the Convention on the Rights of the Child became Swedish law. The theoretical framework is based on children’s rights, and mainly three of the governing principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child: the best interests of the child (art. 14), the right to participation (art. 12), and the right to development (art. 6). Ideologies, values, and moral stances are made visible in the analysis of the application of these principles.

     

    In the judgments, generally, a view of children's rights emerges as essentially related to protecting basic needs. The so-called interest perspective on rights, where rights correlate with protecting needs, rather than protecting the expressed will of the person (Maccormick, 1976, s. 306), is the overriding tendency in the study of the judgments. Implicitly, the understanding of the child perspective emerges where the children's best interest and the children's right to development become dominant over the right to participation. The administrative courts understand the children’s best interest and the right to development as mutually dependent and as protectionist principles, where security, care, and emotional support become central expressions in the judgments in general. Family law theorist John Eekelaar (1994, s. 47-48) establishes that the assessment of a child's best interests requires that an objective and a subjective element are brought together, i.e., general knowledge about the child and, also, the child's own experiences and opinion. The objective perspective is prominent in the administrative courts’ assessment of the children's best interests, and the children's needs and narratives are formulated from an adult perspective.

     

    A distinctive change in the judgments after the Convention on the Rights of the Child became Swedish law is that the children's feelings and thoughts are given more space in the administrative courts’ reasoning. The children are referenced to as subjects, and it is thus possible to see increased tendencies towards a children's rights discourse. Also, detailed and advanced reasoning about the children's needs, vulnerability and development appears to a greater extent. Descriptions of how different areas of the children's lives are affected appear frequently in the judgments after the Convention on the Rights of the Child became Swedish law. When using Martha Nussbaum's capability approach (Nussbaum, 2013, s. 30), it is possible to discern in the judgments a view of children's rights where the protection of basic needs, such as physical and mental health, is fundamental to being able to develop autonomy and self-determination. Although the children's experiences, stories and needs are at the center of the judgment, it is formulated from an adult perspective. The children's opinions and expressed wills do not have a prominent role in most judgments. The view that eventually becomes dominant is a protectionist attitude to the rights of children. The protectionist attitude towards children's rights risks increasingly becoming paternalistic in its application when the children's opinions and wills are excluded in the judgments. The understanding of participation that appears is basically connected to participation as a procedural right that aims to protect the needs of the child. Participation as a substantial right has no impact in any of the 20 judgments. Based on an understanding of participation as an expression of human autonomy and dignity, the child does not appear as a subject of his own rights and thus indicates an incomplete children's rights discourse in the judgments both before and after the Convention on the Rights of the Child became Swedish law.

    Hate crime and men’s violence against women are two well-recognised and highly prioritised human rights phenomena in both international and local contexts. Yet, the idea of linking the two phenomena together has received very limited support. As a series of lethal acts of Incel- violence – violence characterised by misogynistic motives and an alt-right ideology of male supremacy – have taken place globally in recent years, a discussion on the region of the human rights spectrum where gendered violence and hate crime legislation overlap is more relevant than ever. Thus, this study’s overarching purpose is to – through a comparative analysis of studies on hate crime and men’s violence against women from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden – investigate the definition of hate crime and its scope in relation to gendered violence with a primary objective of identifying factors that explain why violent crimes against women motivated by misogynistic principles are rarely, if ever, recognised as hate crimes. By drawing on explanatory models of normalisation and theories on power relations, the practice of othering, the male norm and the norm of masculinity, and gendered spheres, the study sets out to evaluate a thesis that suggests that the infrequent inclusion of violent crimes with female victims in the legal and general perception of hate crime can be at least partially explained with reference to the normalisation of male violence against women, and the traditional expectation and assumption that violence against women is rooted in personal, emotional conflicts rather than impersonal hate motives. The analysis initially explores how the gender category is positioned within the legal phenomenon of hate crime by looking at a generalised criteria for hate crime, the normative view on hate crime victims, the reporting and statistics of hate crime, and arguments for and against the inclusion of a gender category in legal statues on bias crimes. The analysis then moves on to analyse three different categories of violence against women – domestic abuse, sexual assault and rape, and Incel-violence – in relation to gendered power dynamics and norms. The study’s results show that even though motives of hate can be linked to different forms of gendered violence, the traditional understanding of what constitutes a hate crime and a hate crime victim along with stereotypical assumptions on what male-on-female violence looks like, makes men’s violence against women appear incompatible with the hate crime phenomenon even in situations when cases of gendered violence actually fit into the generalised hate crime criteria that legal authorities and the public accept as the definition of a hate crime.

    The compatibility between the Christian faith and various scientific advances has been up for discussion time and again to the degree that the debate is hard to miss. According to most, the most daunting subject of the discussion might be the compatibility with Darwin’s theory of evolution. In an attempt to get a perspective on this issue, this paper discusses compatibility by analysing the argumentation on the subject by two evolutionary biologists: Richard Dawkins and Joan Roughgarden. The arguments of the two authors are then tested regarding validity and applicability, leading to the conclusion that although both make valid claims regarding the subject of evolution, Dawkins’ reasoning of incompatibility can only be applied to a strictly limited group of Christians, whereas Roughgarden’s arguments for compatibility between the theory of evolution the Bible appears to be both tenable and applicable to Christianity at large. The conclusion is thus drawn that a certain compatibility appears to exist.

    In this study, the potential for artificially intelligent sapient life to be integrated into a Lutheran theological anthropology is investigated. The investigation is done via the means of a reconstruction and reactualisation of Lutheran anthropology, applied to the hypothetical scenario of artificial general intelligences having been created. The study takes its roots in questions of how intelligent life made by human artifice would interact with the Lutheran narrative-relational imago Dei paradigm, and what room there is within the Lutheran framework to integrate such intelligent life. In the study, the analysis will be threefold; with the first chapter dedicated to presenting the basis within Lutheran theology within which the rest of the study is conducted, the second chapter to identifying core points of conflict that may arise were artificial life to be introduced, and the third to finding preliminary solutions to these. Although the study is and must be hypothetical-speculative in nature, the conclusion is reached that there seems to be some manner of room for artificial intelligences to be integrated into a Lutheran way of understanding the imago Dei paradigm, albeit with some lingering issues that can quite hardly be solved entirely until the real dawn of artificial intelligence. Although some reservations remain, it therefore points towards the possibility of future artificial intelligences being Humanity’s theological equals, and leaves it to future studies to reach a more elaborate understanding of what that means and implies in practice, both ethical and dogmatic.

    The Social Democratic party of Sweden (SAP) was from its starting point in late 19th century oppositional to the Swedish Church and its position in Swedish society. But soon two different views were formed. The first view was to cut all ties between state and church. The second view was to perform a democratic reformation of the Church. The SAP have since long engaged itself in church politics and governing on different levels.

    This thesis deals with the ecclesiology of the SAP as presented by the party executive in normative outlines for church-politics. The investigation starts with the first published outlines in 1979 and ends with the outlines published in 1996, the year after the decision of the Swedish parliament to make a juridical separation between state and church by jan 1 2000.

    These political outlines form a framework for the party´s local, regional och central political activities in the Swedish Church. The starting point is the introduction of the party program and the democratization of the structure of Society. The structure of the Church should therefore also be democratized. Those emplyed by the Church are also to support this democratized structure. The goal of this process is to make the Church available and reachable for everyone in Sweden, also in a new cultural situation when people and church no longer can be looked upon as one unity. The Swedish Church has, says the SAP, therefore no right to set up rules for who can and who can not become a member of the Church.

    The processes of “othering” often create coarse images of “the other”, therefore there is a need to rethink the narrative of “the other”. A fruitful narrative of “the other” could be helpful in the interaction in multi-religious and multicultural social settings. The aim is to scrutinize the narrative of “the other” in Christian thought, in order to see if there is a Christian particular and fruitful narrative of “the other”, and if so, if this representation is useful in peace-processes. This study investigates how the representation of “the other” from a Christian context may be helpful in shifting attitudes. Specifically, it investigates the history and settings of “the other” and “othering”, and tries to find a more inclusive approach.

    In order to test the hypothesis that a fruitful narrative on “the other” could be beneficial in peace-processes, an analysis is done of “the other” within Christian faith. This takes place in distinction to the phenomenological and ethical perspective, with a broad set of literature and articles. This qualitative literature analysis examines the Christology and ecclesiology in Stanley Hauerwas’ and Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theological writings, with the help of a theoretical framework, which is developed to classify structural features. 

    The results suggest that there is a potentiality in redefining “the other”, and that Bonhoeffer’s and Hauerwas’ understanding of the narrative of “the other” leads to belonging (inclusivism) rather than exclusivism. On this basis, this narrative should be taken into account in peace-processes, because an understanding of “the other” is beneficial in accepting differences as something that unite us rather than divide us.

    The subject of this thesis is the ethics of German 19th century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. The study examines Schopenhauer’s ethics and investigates his criticism of the ethics of his older German colleague Immanuel Kant. By arguing that all true morally acceptable and good actions originate from compassion, Schopenhauer distinguishes his view from the deontological ethics held by Kant. The study focuses on Schopenhauer’s view on the basis of morals. Its purpose is to consider an ethical perspective that interconnect moral considerations with human empathy. By comparing the arguments presented by these two philosophers one can get a clearer view of the extent to which Schopenhauer’s criticism of Kant’s ethics is justified. In the analysis, five major parts of Schopenhauer’s criticism are identified and studied one by one. The findings suggest that Schopenhauer’s ethics and the ethics of Kant can be represented as two different ethical paradigms.

    The present Bachelor thesis deals with the portrayals of evil in the two novels Dvärgen (The Dwarf) and Bödeln (The Hangman), both written by Swedish author Pär Lagerkvist and published in the first half of the twentieth century. The theoretical starting point of the thesis is based on a text centered analysis in which I will assume that the fictional characters can be treated as if they were real. In two separate analyses of how evil is portrayed and what functions it can fill, I illuminate a number of examples of how evil is expressed in the narratives. I also show that evil can be portrayed as something that creates meaning within the framework of the literary texts.

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the communication of six different non-governmentalorganizations present in the refugee camps in the Aegean Sea, to understand which problemsthey identify as critical and how the communication may be interpreted in the light of theneeds of the organizations. The second purpose is to review the discrepancy between thehumanitarian perspective and the justification perspective, by applying the theoreticalframework consisting of framing theory and two discourse-theoretical theories on the resultsof the content analysis.

    According to the non-governmental organizations, the camps do not meet seven of the ninebasic needs identified by Sphere and UNHCR. The material does not provide enoughinformation regarding the last two needs, the right to non-refoulement and accessibility forpeople with disabilities. While the organizations might have an interest in existing, theanalysis shows that the most evident receivers of the reports are political stakeholders and thegeneral public, and the most evident intent is to conduct advocacy and raise awareness.

    The theoretical analysis shows that the camps cannot be considered justified as theprerequisites for a fair and functioning decision-making process where every individualsubject to the decision is recognized are not fulfilled. Hence, there is a discrepancy betweenthe humanitarian perspective and the justificatory perspective, in which the justificatoryperspective sets higher requirements focusing on equal humanitarian preconditions andpolitical rights, while the humanitarian perspective solely focuses on basic needs fulfillment.
