    Abstract [en]

    This thesis addresses the investigation of doubly excited 2l´nl states in helium atoms and double core excitations in solid lithium compounds.

    Measurements on He are made in field free environments and under the influence of electric and magnetic fields, using synchrotron based inelastic photon scattering. Cross sections for scattering to singly excited final states are directly determined and compared to theoretical results and are found to be in excellent agreement. Radiative and spin-orbit effects are quantified and are shown to play an important role in the overall characterization of highly excited He states below the N =2 threshold. A dramatic electric field dependence is also observed in the flourecence yield already for relatively weak fields. This signal increase, induced by electric as well as magnetic fields, is interpreted in terms of mixing with states of higher fluorescence branching ratios.

    Double core excitations at the lithium site in solid lithium compounds are investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The lithium halides LiF, LiCl, LiBr and LiI are studied as well as the molecular compounds Li2O, Li2CO3 and LiBF4. States with one, as well as both, of the excited electrons localized at the site of the bare lithium nucleus are identified, and transitions which involve additional band excitations are observed. A strong influence of the chemical surrounding is found, and it is discussed in terms of the ionic character of the chemical bond.

    Abstract [en]

    A recent experimental study [J.-E. Rubensson et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 947 (1999)] measured a significant fluorescence yield of the He( 2lnl) photoexcited resonances, showing major qualitative differences from nonrelativistic predictions. We present a further theoretical study of these states, and perform R-matrix multichannel quantum defect theory calculations to extract fluorescence and ionization cross sections. These theoretical results are in excellent agreement with newer, higher-resolution measurements. Radiative and spin-orbit effects are quantified and shown to play an important role in the overall characterization of highly excited states.

    Abstract [en]

    A dramatic electric field dependence has been observed in the fluorescence yield spectrum of the doubly excited states in helium, where a rich phenomenology is encountered below the N=2 threshold. Fluorescence yields of certain states can be tuned to zero, while other dipole-forbidden states are significantly enhanced, for fields much weaker than 1  kV/cm. Using an R-matrix multichannel quantum defect theory, spherical-to-parabolic frame transformation method, we are able to reproduce the main features of the observed spectrum, and we discuss the qualitative behavior in terms of weak electric field mixing.

    Abstract [en]

    An influence of static magnetic fields on the fluorescence yield spectrum of He in the vicinity of the N=2 thresholds has been observed. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with predictions based on multichannel quantum defect theory, and it is demonstrated that the Rydberg electron ℓ mixing due to the diamagnetic interaction is essential for the description of the observed fluorescence yield intensity enhancement.

    Inelastic soft x-ray scattering in LiCl, resonantly enhanced at states with two Li 1s vacancies, is investigated. States in which both excited electrons are localized during the double core hole lifetime, in which one of the electrons delocalize, as well as triply excited states in which the double core excitation is accompanied by a valence-to-conduction band excitation, contribute to the scattering. The angular momentum symmetry of the involved states and the vibronic coupling during the scattering process are reflected in the angular anisotropy. The effect on the local electronic structure of multiple core holes is theoretically studied by means of supercell band calculations.

    Abstract [en]

    The origin of the different Li+ intercalation behavior of raw and jet-milled natural graphite has been investigated. Jet-milled graphite is found to cycle reversibly in equal solvent mixture of propylene carbonate (PC) and etylene carbonate (EC), whereas raw graphite does not. Using both Al Ka and synchrotron radiation (SR) Photoelectron Spectroscopy, new insight is obtained inti the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the two different graphite materials during electrochemical cycling in 1 M LiPF6 in either PC:EC (1:1) or in PC with 5% vinylene carbonate (VC) as additive. Solvent reduction products are found at the surface of both raw and jat-milled graphite cycled in PC:EC (1:1), but differed in composition. The addition of VC reduces primarily the quantities of salt reaction products (LiF and LixPFy compounds) and produces a mainly organic SEI layer. Electron diffraction from the edges for raw and jet-milled graphite particles shows a physical barrier hindering PC co-intercalation and faciltating the formation of a stable SEI layer.

    Abstract [en]

    The synthesis of a novel ligand 2′-[1-(2-pyridinyl)-ethylidene]-oxamohydrazide (Hapsox), from a series of 2-acetylpyridine acylhydrazones, and its complex with Co(III), which is the first in this series of complexes are described. Both the ligand and the complex were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectra, and the structure of the complex [Co(apsox)2]ClO4 was determined by X-ray structural analysis. It was established that [Co(apsox)2]ClO4 has an octahedral geometry with two tridentate apsox ligands in monoanionic form. Structural characteristics, lengths of the bonds, and angles between the bonds were typical for Co(III) complexes of distorted octahedral geometry. Both direct and template synthesis afforded the same geometrical isomer of the complex with two apsox ligands meridionally bound to the central metal ion, even in the case when equimolar quantities of Co(ClO4)2 and Hapsox were applied.

    Abstract [en]

    We have measured X-ray absorption and emission near the C Is edge of graphite electrodes cycled in lithium-ion battery cells. Resonantly excited emission spectra of graphite electrodes exhibit features characteristic of both highly oriented pyrolytic graphite as well as polycrystalline graphite. Spectra of three electrodes cycled in two different electrolytes are presented and compared with spectra of the pristine electrode. A solid electrolyte interphase(SEI) was detected on the electrochemically cycled electrodes. By the use of selective excitation, resonant X-ray emission spectra of the SEI-species were obtained and compared to spectra of reference compounds. The SEI on the cycled graphite anode was shown to comprise lithium oxalate (Li2C2O4), lithium succinate (LiO2CCH2CH2CO2Li) and lithium methoxide (LiOCH3).

    Abstract [en]

    The double photoionisation spectrum of molecular iodine has been measured at three wavelengths by the TOF-PEPECO technique and is interpreted using relativistic molecular structure COSCI calculations of potential curves for a large number of electronic states connected to the three lowest groups of dissociation limits. The lowest double ionisation energy is 24.85 ± 0.02 eV (adiabatic) or 24.95 ± 0.02 eV (vertical). It is associated with the electronic state of . The double ionisation process is mainly direct, and positions and widths of the bands are well reproduced by the calculations.

    Abstract [en]

    The valence character of O 1s -> Rydberg excited O-2 is investigated by means of participator Auger decay spectroscopy, performed at selected photon energies across the K-shell resonance region, and by means of partial ion yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy. For several of the excitation energies studied, the authors find substantial sigma(*)((4)Sigma(-)(u),(2)Sigma(-)(u)) valence character being mixed with ns sigma and np sigma ((4)Sigma(-)(u),(2)Sigma(-)(u)) Rydberg states. An experimental indication of a coupling between the channels associated with quartet and doublet ion cores is considered and discussed. New spectroscopic constants are derived for the singly ionized X (2)Pi(g) state of O-2 based on the observation of at least 20 vibrational sublevels.
