    Abstract [en]

A new species of the Afro-Malagasy genus Phyllopentas Karehed & B. Bremer, Phyllopentas flava Razafim., T. Andriam. et Karehed, is described and illustrated. This plant is restricted to the Itremo region in southeastern Madagascar and is distinct morphologically from the other species of the genus by its pubescent, narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic leaves, grey-whitish and thickly hairy midribs and secondary veins on the lower surfaces of leaves, and functionally dioecious and heterodistylous flowers. Summaries of distribution, phenology, habitat, and ecology are given and a conservation assessment is also provided.

Paracarphalea, a new genus of the coffee family segregated from the Malagasy endemic genus Carphalea (Rubiaceae, Rubioideae, Knoxieae)2016In: Phytotaxa, ISSN 1179-3155, E-ISSN 1179-3163, Vol. 263, no 2, 98-112 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Malagasy genus Carphalea (Rubiaceae) consists of six species (C. angulata, C. cloiselii, C. kirondron, C. linearifolia, C. madagascariensis, C. pervilleana) of shrubs or small trees and is recognizable by a distinctly lobed calyx, 2(–4)-locular ovaries, each locule with several ovules on a rod-like stalk arising from the base of the locule, and indehiscent fruits. Carphalea linearifolia, rediscovered in 2010, has not previously been included in any Rubiaceae molecular phylogenetic studies. We re-investigated the monophyly of Carphalea using sequence data from chloroplast (rps16 and trnT-F) and nuclear (ITS and ETS) markers analysed with parsimony and Bayesian methods. Carphalea linearifolia forms a clade with Ccloiselii and the type species C. madagascariensis. This clade is sister to a clade consisting of the rest of the Carphalea species plus the genus Triainolepis. According to these results, the new genus Paracarphalea is here described to accommodate Carphalea angulata, C. kirondron, and C. pervilleana. Theconservation status of Carphalea linearifolia is assessed as critically endangered according to IUCN criteria.

Morphological and phylogenetic relationships of the threatened geophyte Wurmbea novae-zelandiae (Colchicaceae) from New Zealand, with notes on typification2017In: Phytotaxa, ISSN 1179-3155, E-ISSN 1179-3163, Vol. 307, no 2, 123-132 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The new combination Wurmbea novae-zelandiae was recently made based on published phylogenetic studies, but little information was provided on its relationships based on morphology. This species was originally described as Anguillaria novae-zelandiae, for which a lectotype is designated. Morphological characters of W. novae-zelandiae are re-evaluated and shown to be characteristic of Wurmbea, thereby supporting the revised generic placement. However, W. novae-zelandiae differs from all other Wurmbea species in its diminutive stature, fewer tepals and stamens, and variable floral morphology, with 1-3 carpels, often leaf-like tepals, and aberrant tepal shape and number. DNA sequence data places W. novae-zelandiae as the sister species of W. uniflora, a species not included in earlier phylogenetic studies. These two species share mostly solitary flowers with white tepals, nectaries two per tepal and similar in form and position, small yellow anthers, and styles that are relatively short and recurve as flowering proceeds, with the inner style surface stigmatic for up to half of its length. A revised generic description of Wurmbea is provided to take account of the recently widened concept.

Phylogeny and Biogeography of Dionysia (Primulaceae)2004In: International journal of plant sciences, ISSN 1058-5893, E-ISSN 1537-5315, Vol. 165, no 5, 845-860 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cladistic analyses using parsimony jackknifing and Bayesian inference were performed to elucidate phylogenetic relationships in the genus Dionysia. DNA sequences from one nuclear DNA region (ITS) and from two chloroplast genome regions (rps16 intron and trnL‐trnF) were used with and without the addition of a morphological character matrix. A total of 43 species from Primulaceae were sequenced, including 39 species of Dionysia. The results strongly suggest that the sister species to the rest of genus Dionysia are Dionysia balsamea and D. hissarica, not D. mira. No section and subsection with more than one species ofDionysia as currently circumscribed appears to be monophyletic. Instead, species often belong to clades corresponding to geographical proximity. Earlier proposed notions of evolutionary trends and geographical migrations in Dionysia are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Samples from 25 genera of the lily family, in its widest circumscription, were subjected to nanospray mass spectrometry analysis to investigate the presence of colchicine. This alkaloid has been proposed to have a restricted distribution within the former lilioid subfamily Wurmbeoideae. After the disintegration of the broadly circumscribed lily family this subfamily has been known as Colchicaceae. Phylogenetic analysis of lilioid monocotyledons has shown that the family Colchicaceae includes a number of genera previously not placed in Wurmbeoideae, eg. Burchardia, Disporum, Schelhammera, Tripladenia and Uvularia. By using the sensitive technique of nanospray mass spectrometry we here show that these genera do contain colchicine. In the case of Burchardia and Uvularia this is contrary to published reports. To test the assumption that colchicine is restricted to Colchicaceae we analysed samples from all genera in the family lacking information, or having conflicting reports, for colchicine content. We also sampled the closest relatives of the family according to phylogenetic results, and a number of genera with historical reports of colchicine presence. All samples from Colchicaceae contained colchicine, while none of the samples from genera in other families did. This implies that the biosynthesis of colchicine evolved within the common ancestor to Colchicaceae, and that this alkaloid may be regarded as a synapomorphic character for the family.
