    Abstract [sv]

    Vi har studerat programgenomströmning och faktorer som påverkar den för ingenjörsutbildningar vid Uppsala universitet. Analys av studiestatistik visar att antalet studenter som avbryter utbildningarna är störst i början, men att det relativa avhoppet är förhållandevis konstant till och med femte terminen. En kvalitativ analys av enkätsvar om studieval och avhoppsöverväganden identifierade fem områden av särskild betydelse för studenters relation till sin utbildning: intresse, mål, framgång, trivsel och kvalitet. Studien ger en värdefull grund för fortsatt utvecklingsarbete för att förbättra genomströmning, både på ingenjörsutbildningar och på andra program.

    Abstract [sv]

    Vid ett antal lärosäten i Sverige har lokala system för att redovisa det egna lärosätets vetenskapliga publicering (publiceringsdatabaser) redan tagits i drift eller håller på att utvecklas. Uppgifterna i dessa system ligger i de flesta fall till grund för den redovisning av vetenskaplig publicering som Utbildningsdepartementet numera efterfrågar. För detta ändamål, och för eventuellt andra jämförande studier, är det viktigt att data anges på ett enhetligt sätt. Detta är även förutsättningen för att ett informationsutbyte vid exempelvis en gemensam exponering av svensk vetenskaplig publicering skall kunna möjliggöras.

    Därför har representanter för en del av dessa lärosäten fått i uppdrag att inom delprojekt 1 (DP 1) inom Samordning av den svenska högskolans elektroniska publicering (SVEP) utarbeta ett förslag till gemensamma riktlinjer för dessa publiceringsdatabaser.

    Dessa riktlinjer syftar till att ange vilka uppgifter som minst ska vara med vid beskrivningen av en publikation samt till att få en enhetlig klassificering vad gäller publikationstyp och ämnesområde.

    Förslag till utökningar av minimiformatet ges också under de olika elementen i beskrivingsformatet. Dessa utökningar motsvarar i princip en fullständig beskrivningsnivå.

    Abstract [en]

    Spatial and temporal expression patterns of the sbeII and sbeI genes, encoding starch branching enzyme II and I, respectively, in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) were studied at different phenological stages of the crop. A partial cDNA for sbeII in cassava was cloned and used along with a cDNA-specific fragment of sbeI. As the cassava plant aged, the transcriptional activity of the sbeII and sbeI genes in the underground storage roots increased, whereas the activity in other organs remained the same or declined. At 180 days after planting (d.a.p.), levels of sbeII and sbeI transcripts in storage roots were very low, whereas at 360 d.a.p., the levels had increased dramatically. The 360 d.a.p. old storage roots also accumulated gbssII and gbssI transcripts, as well as a longer gbssI transcript, gbssI′. The difference between the gbssI and gbssI′ transcripts was shown to be due to differential splicing, whereby the gbssI′ transcript retained the first three introns. Unexpectedly, expression of sbeII and sbeI in the 360 d.a.p. storage roots exhibited fluctuations during the 24 h cycle, both under the normal light/dark regime and under continuous light or continuous dark conditions.

    The ‘Continuous Development of Active Student Participation’ at Uppsala University is a co-led project between students and academic developers. The group has forged a new kind of student–faculty partnership within academic development. Teaming academic developers with students to work together on improving higher education pedagogy is a critical aspect in this work as both perspectives are valuable and necessary in creating a learning practice that is valid for students and teachers alike. There is significant potential for this model to be implemented by universities elsewhere.

    Abstract [en]

    Bringing flexibility and extensibility into Learning Management Systems is crucial because it gives teachers and students a free choice of technologies and educational materials they want to use for their courses. This paper presents a solution by enabling widgets (OpenSocial apps) within Mood le. Our first Moodle plugin allows teachers to freely choose a set of tools they want to use in their courses, although students cannot change widgets proposed by teachers. Additionally, the plugin enables the flexible interaction interfaces inside Mood le and improves the interoperability of Mood le with other Web platforms. The environment was evaluated with students within several courses. Even though the environment was perceived as useful by students, they lacked their own personalization. The second Mood le plugin described tackles this problem.

    Abstract [en]

    The role of IT at the workplace has changed dramatically from being a tool within the work environment to include all aspects of social and private life. New workplaces emerge where IT becomes more and more divergent, embedded and pervasive. These new aspects of IT at work need to be addressed with new or adapted human centred activities. This paper present and discuss a modified version of personas called contextual personas developed to better address the new working life. The contextual personas were developed using contextual inquiry, and focus groups as well as argumentative design. From the process of developing the contextual personas we learned that they are indeed a promising tool to understand the new work situations, and especially the holistic view of IT at work as they bring the whole working-life of the personas into focus. Finally, we discuss in what way the contextual personas could give developers extended understanding of the users' future office work environment.

    We show conditional lower bounds for well-studied #P-hard problems: -The number of satisfying assignments of a 2-CNF formula with n variables cannot be computed in time exp(o(n)), and the same is true for computing the number of all independent sets in an n-vertex graph. -The permanent of an n x n matrix with entries 0 and 1 cannot be computed in time exp(o(n)). -The Tutte polynomial of an n-vertex multigraph cannot be computed in time exp(o(n)) at most evaluation points (x, y) in the case of multigraphs, and it cannot be computed in time exp(o(n/poly log n)) in the case of simple graphs. Our lower bounds are relative to (variants of) the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), which says that the satisfiability of n-variable 3-CNF formulas cannot be decided in time exp(o(n)). We relax this hypothesis by introducing its counting version #ETH; namely, that the satisfying assignments cannot be counted in time exp(o(n)). In order to use #ETH for our lower bounds, we transfer the sparsification lemma for d-CNF formulas to the counting setting.
