Wartime trade and tariffs in Sweden from the Napoleonic Wars to World War I2018In: Small and Medium Powers in Global History: Trade, Conflicts, and Neutrality from the 18th to the 20th Centuries / [ed] Jari Eloranta; Eric Golson; Peter Hedberg; Maria Christina Moreira, Milton Park: Routledge, 2018, p. 116-138Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This volume brings together a leading group of scholars to offer a new perspective on the history of conflicts and trade, focusing on the role of small and medium, or "weak", and often neutral states. Existing historiography has often downplayed the importance of such states in world trade, during armed conflicts, and as important agents in the expanding trade and global connections of the last 250 years. The country studies demonstrate that these states played a much bigger role in world and bilateral trade than has previously been assumed, and that this role was augmented by the emergence of truly global conflicts and total war. In addition to careful country or comparative studies, this book provides new data on trade and shipping during wars and examines the impact of this trade on the individual states' economies. It spans the period from the late 18th century to the First and Second World Wars and the Cold War of the 20th century, a crucial period of change in the concept and practice of neutrality and trade, as well as periods of transition in the nature and technology of warfare. This book will be of great interest to scholars of economic history, comparative history, international relations, and political science.

Neutral Trade in Time of War: The Case of Sweden, 1838-19602015In: International Journal of Maritime History, ISSN 0843-8714, E-ISSN 2052-7756, Vol. 27, no 1, p. 61-78Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It is an established view that war aggravates economic growth due to the direct costs of war, and to the indirect costs incurred from naval warfare and economic blockades. In this article, however, we suggest that non-belligerent countries with access to open trade channels could maintain or expand their trade, even when world trade had declined. As a result, in addition to the advantages of evading the costs of war, non-belligerent countries may have experienced gains from trade during war periods. This contention is based on an examination of the wartime trade of non-belligerent Sweden during four European wars, c.1838-1960. We use interrupted time series analysis to estimate the impact of the wars on Swedish trade and real GDP growth, and we also measure the relative impact of the wars by comparing the Swedish experience to those of the belligerent countries.

Open for Welfare: Openness to Trade and Social Spending in the West, 1920–19902017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Openness to trade promotes economic growth and reduces poverty. In terms of its impact on welfare policies it has been said on the hand to reduced social spending, and on the other hand it has been argued that small open economies in Europe have opted for redistributive economic policies. In this paper we aim to test the hypothesis of whether economic openness has actually led to increased social spending. We do this with a sample of 20 countries from Europe, North America, and Oceania between 1920 and 1990. It was during this time when social spending increased dramatically and openness rapidly rose following its collapse during WWII. We divide the countries into small and large economies, in order to test Peter Katzenstein’s hypothesis, but we also suggest that important differences can be found between regions/political economies. We find that countries in Southern Europe were both less open during this period and also had a lower degree of social spending compared to Northern and Western Europe. However, we find little statistically significant evidence that openness had a major positive impact on social spending. Rather, it seems that openness was strongly correlated with economic growth, which itself seems to be a better predictor of social spending.
