Nordic approach to growth and welfare: European lessons to be learned?2008Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The EU’s Lisbon Strategy, adopted in 2000, set ambitious goals, a roadmap for achieving them and quantitative targets for 2010. Despite the view in some quarters just a few years ago that the Nordic countries were neither sustainable nor competitive, these countries have subsequently risen to become some of Europe’s most consistent performers in the efforts to reach the Lisbon targets. The intention of this book is to document how good governance has been developed in the Nordic countries. It proposes some relevant lessons for European decision-makers while highlighting individual features of the countries in the Nordic region.

Regulatory Change and International Co-operation: The Scandinavian Telecommunication Agreements, 1900-19601999In: Scandinavian Economic History Review, ISSN 0358-5522, E-ISSN 1750-2837, Vol. 47, no 2, p. 63-77Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article deals with the issue of international co-operation and co-ordination in the Scandinavian communication industries. While many studies have been made of the international organizations regulating these industries, little has been said about the various voluntary, often informal, bilateral and multilateral agreements that exist outside such organizations. Yet those agreements were influential in shaping the international Scandinavian communications system as well as the national systems. In this article we study the evolution of a Scandinavian forum for co-operation in telecommunications and other network industries during the first half of the twentieth century. One important finding is the path-dependent nature of the co-operation. Once the national authorities had been brought together and their co-operation became fruitful, the field for such eciion expanded into other issues. Another finding is that as the Scandinavian authorities became more closely connected, they could use this to their advantage in other international organizations.

Between Macro and Micro – what Economic History can learn from Modern economics2004In: Scandinavian Economic History Review, ISSN 0358-5522, E-ISSN 1750-2837, Vol. 51, no 2, p. 14-22Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of economic history to modern economic theory. Taking my point of departure from the division that still haunts economic history — between micro and macro approaches — the paper argues that economic theory today is significantly different from what it was only twenty or thirty years ago. Hence, for example, the division between micro and macro has been upset in modern economics. Also the development of institutional economics, the use of concepts like “bounded rationality” or “path dependence” makes it necessary for economic historians to learn from and confront modern economic theorizing. Many economic historians criticise a version of (neo-classical) economics) that belongs rather to the past than to the present.

    Abstract [en]

In historical discourse business history and the history of work are most often treated as two separate fields of enquiry, with different agendas, theoretical fundaments and sometimes also methodologies. This paper argues that this is a misnomer. Although division of labour in the social sciences is only a natural consequence of the growth of knowledge, there are many reasons why business history and history of work should cooperate more in the future. As a consequence, new insights could be found and novel ways to understand both the organisation of work and of business could be explored. The aim of this paper is to present some stylised examples connected with the three industrial revolutions occurring since the middle of the eighteenth century in order to argue for such joint ventures.

Freedom and trade: from Corporate Freedom and Jealousy of Trade to a Natural Liberty2013In: Keio Economic Studies, ISSN 0022-9709, Vol. 49, p. 19-30Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to discuss the transformation of the concept of "free" or "freedom of trade" from its Republican corporate version to its emphasis on personal liberty against the backbone of Eighteenth century enlightenment ideas. Hence the meaning of "liberty" or "freedom of trade" was radically transcended during the period of the rise of absolute monarchies with the emergence of fierce trade competition described by David Hume and others as "jealousy of trade", especially during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth century. Until the Seventeenth century when somebody spoke of "freedom", or "liberty", of trade, it generally referred to what has been called "city" or "town policy" common during the Medieval period in Western Europe at least back to the Thirteenth century. Over time this interpretation however became increasingly challenged. The reasons for this are complex. The introduction of absolutist monarchies implied a powerful challenge to city freedom with dire consequences. Moreover monopolies held by powerful exclusive trading corporation and guilds led to protest and even rebellion by those excluded. Thus "freedom of trade" slowly changed from being a defence for "free" cities against the princely ruler or king to a slogan directed against the monopolies of rich and powerful exclusive merchant corporations. Instead "freedom of trade" became an integral part of state trade policies in the context of international rivalry for trade and markets in the 18th century. However, also this understanding of the concept became challenged during the same century by writers inspired by Natural rights discourse. Increasingly "freedom of trade" was regarded as a part of a natural system of individual liberty.
