Cultural capital in the elite subfield of Swedish higher education2016In: Poetics (Amsterdam. Print), ISSN 0304-422X, E-ISSN 1872-7514Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The idea of a strong tie between culture and education, advocated by Bourdieu and his colleagues from the 1960s, is in this article explored in detail by investigating cultural capital in both its embodied state, expressed in tastes and cultural practices among students in the elite subfield of Swedish higher education, and its institutionalised state, through an analysis of the same students’ enrolment patterns. By applying Specific MCA to a questionnaire answered by 1152 students at 20 socially and scholarly selective programmes we identify three main dimensions in the space of lifestyles. The first dimension separates advanced and legitimate cultural practices and tastes from mainstream ones. In a second dimension, elaborate and often costly body-oriented practices in training or clothing are distinguished from a more ascetic lifestyle. The third dimension opposes a pole of establishment from a pole of non-establishment. The study programmes are well dispersed in the space of lifestyles, which suggests a close relation between embodied and institutionalised states of cultural capital. We finally argue that the pursuit of field-specific capital best explains this dispersion: the future trajectories into specific regions of the field of power tend to correspond to distinct lifestyles of various categories of elite students.

    Abstract [en]

The article explores combinations of subjects in study programmes within the Swedish higher education system. By studying the co-occurrence of subjects we reveal the probability of different combinations within various programs. To a large extent, the structure of the space of subject combinations follows the logic of faculties, with two main dimensions and four distinct poles. In the first dimension a science and technology pole is opposed to a social sciences and humanities pole, whereas the second dimension separates a medicine and science pole from a linguistic and cultural sciences pole. Advocates of Sustainable Development claim that the area is particularly suited for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaborations. However, by examining the position of Sustainable Development programmes we show that programmes within this area follow the same patterns of subject co-occurrence as other programmes in technology and business studies.

    Abstract [en]

The new, complex system for admittance to higher education in Sweden has created a situation where pupils in upper secondary school can choose to read certain courses that give extra credits, thus giving them an edge when trying to enter highly selected programs at the university level. Extra credits are given for courses in advanced mathematics and modern languages, for example. From a sociological viewpoint it is interesting to examine which groups of pupils take advantage of this innovation, with respect to social class, gender, inherited and acquired capital. We focus on the case of the advanced course in English which has increased its proportion of pupils, most of them enrolled in pro-grams that prepare them for higher education. We can show that it is mainly pupils with a high amount of acquired educational capital from higher social backgrounds who avail themselves of this opportunity. At the same time, the prevalence of female students in the course has decreased. We also conclude that the pupils misrecognize the value of the extra credits awarded as a valid explanation for their choice of advanced studies of English.

    Abstract [en]

The focus of this thesis is on how educational capital is generated, distributed, and transmitted. Two of the most resource-rich regions in Sweden are investigated: Uppsala—wealthy in educational capital—and the northern part of Stockholm where economic capital predominates.

The tools, the most significant concepts—e.g. educational capital—and the explanatory models used, are drawn from Pierre Bourdieu’s research. Statistical methods include geometrical data analysis (specific multiple correspondence analysis and Euclidean classification). The empirical material consists of data from Statistics Sweden on all grade-nine leavers in 1988 with information on their educational trajectory and their parents’ social properties, and of interviews with pupils in Uppsala and students attending elite institutions of higher education in Stockholm.

The distribution of the students’ assets displays similar patterns in the two investigated regions. Students with significant inherited resources were the most successful in converting their assets into educational capital of their own. A gendered opposition was observed between, on the one hand, studies of French and the Humanities, and, on the other, studies of German and technology. A third dimension consisted of a polarity between a social elite and a more meritocratic one.

The interviews underline the crucial importance of the elite schools in generating educational capital. They also show that the parents of these students transfer to them a “natural” willingness to invest in education and to be very selective in their choices. It is thus not a paradox that those individuals who are able to choose virtually freely—that is, the children of the “education elite”—end up making their selection from a very limited set of educational possibilities. It is only logical that the higher the concentration of educational capital held by a group, the more efficiently are new volumes generated, and the more valuable, consequently, is that concentrated good.

    Abstract [en]

The article gives an overview of the emergence and expansion of education in sustainable development within Swedish HE based on anonymised individual-based data of all registered students, 1977–2009. The major trend is that environmental education – education in environmental sciences, applied ecology and sustainable education included – has expanded rapidly during this time period. However, there are large differences between these areas. By far the largest area during the whole period is Environmental Studies, established in 1977. Sustainable development first appeared in 1995 and remained marginal until the Bologna system was introduced in Sweden in 2007. Despite the rapid expansion of Sustainable Development in the last three years of the studied time period, it is difficult to speak of the area as fully established.
