    Einar Löfstedt (1880-1955) påbörjade sin akademiska bana i Uppsala, men blev sedan professor i romersk vältalighet och poetik i Lund (1913-1945). Han författade en rad uppmärksammade studier om latinets utvecklingen i senantiken. Uppsatsen behandlar bakgrunden till den forskningsgren inom latinistken i Sverige, vars främste företrädare var just Einar Löfstedt.
